Surfside Senior Center Gets Spring Spruce-Up

The Surfside Beach location of the Horry County Council on Ag-ing Senior Center on 10th Ave-nue North got a spring clean-up and spruce-up last month from members of the Keep Surfside Beach Beautiful committee, the Ralph Magliette Senior Citizens Committee, Public Works staff, and many who donated plants and supplies. Volunteers from the groups spent most of a Saturday at the facility weeding, planting flowers and bedding plants, and mulching. Workers from the Town’s Pubic Works Department pitched in with a new hard-packed gravel material on the center’s parking area and walkways. The result, says committee chair Tabitha Mull, was “something beautiful to enjoy, and a safe walkway for the seniors.” Some of the newly installed plants were purchased by committee mem-bers; others were donated by town residents. They included hydran-geas, impatiens, coleus and hostas. The final touch, happening later this month, will be a pressure-washing of the entire building by Murrells Inlet Eagle Scout Tom Serviss. All seniors are welcome to participate in the myriad of programs at the Horry County Senior Center. It is located at 1032 10

Take a trip to outer space this summer — without ever leav-ing town. The Surfside Beach library is hosting a full summer of activities for all ages to com-memorate the 50th anniver-sary of the moon mission of US Spacecraft Apollo 11, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. Called Summer Quest, the program will include activities for kids, teens and adults. Kids and teens can participate in classes, book readings and science labs. Kids and teens will both have summer reading programs with space-themed reading materi-als. Those who complete a specified number of books will get to choose from a variety of space themed prizes — key chains, toys, drink cups and more — and can even get credits to forgive library fines. Each Monday, there will be a class geared to younger audi-ences, typically with a STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) topic; among the planned activities are creating a solar cooker, building a moon face with Oreo cookies, or building other structures with Lincoln logs or Legos. On July 8, guest speak-er Pat Stanley will give a talk on financial literacy for kids — yes, kids. Stanley is a vice president at South State Bank.
One of the highlights of the summer for kids from upper elementary through middle school age will be an interac-tive program titled “Solar Sys-tem Shuffle,” to be presented by Ron Revere, a Coastal Car-olina University Physics and Engineering Science instruc-tor. The event is a one-hour hands-on, participatory lesson on our solar system, its com-ponents and how they are arranged. The program is part of NASA’s Solar System Ambassadors program, which works with volunteers around the country to share the latest science and discoveries of NASA's missions. Teen participants will spend the June reading club sessions exploring the “Wild Robot” book series by author Peter Brown.
The following month they’ll cre-ate a play of their own, with the help of Librarian Stevie Jep-son, which they’ll perform for all the Summer Quest readers late in July. Jepson will also direct the young actors. Grownups will have some en-gaging summer activities as well. Thursday mornings are set aside for “Morning Adven-tures,” some space-themed and some on other topics such as genealogy. On June 6 the program is “Galaxy Flowers,”

Memorial Day Ser-vice and Veterans
Memorial Wall
Memorial Day is Monday, May 27th. The town will host its annual Memorial Day Ser-vice at 2:00 p.m. at the Veter-ans Memorial on Surfside Drive at the Passive Park. The Veterans Memorial Wall was constructed to enable more Veterans to be honored or memorialized. Plaques are available for purchase at $50 each. Town Council adopted Ordi-nance #18-0892 at the May 14th meeting. Some of the sections in this ordinance have not changed since the town’s inception in 1964. Hopefully, the amendments will provide for more efficient meetings. To view the ordi-nance visit www.surfside beach.org/ordinances The ordinance changes the code to hold one regular council meeting every month at 6:00 p.m. unless otherwise stated, or there is an execu-tive session published on the agenda. The remainder of the 2019 regular meetings are May 28, June 25, July 23, August 27, September 24, October 22, November 26, and December 12. Executive sessions are at the beginning of the meeting when one is necessary. The Freedom of Information Act enables councilmembers to discuss personnel matters, appointees, contracts, legal matters and some other things in private. Actions are taken during the business portion of the agenda during the regular meeting. Other changes include clarifi-cation of “public comments.” Any individual at the regular meeting may speak about agenda items; business con-ducted and/or town services and operations at the proper
time. Also, comments are lim-ited to three (3) minutes for all speakers, including council-members during their discus-sion/comment time. To avoid conflicts or the ap-pearance of impropriety, this ordinance states that immedi-ate family members of coun-cil, which includes the mayor, are not eligible to serve on any statutory committee. If a family member is elected to Town Council, then the seat is deemed vacated by Section 2-61(n). Neither are immedi-ate family members allowed to serve simultaneously on boards, commissions or com-mittees. Section 2-54(c) addresses de-corum for speakers. Basically, be nice! You can disagree, or have a different point of view, but agree to disagree! Basic rules are No personal attacks No speaking on behalf of

Travel to Space, continued a watercolor class in which par-ticipants will be painting flowers with a cosmic twist: purples to simulate the night sky, white paint used to create stars. On June 20, meteorologist Ed Piotrowski gives a talk on how the interaction of our planet with the atmosphere creates our weather. And on July 25, Ian Hewitt, of the CCU Physic and Engineering Science facul-ty, gives a presentation on the 1969 moon landing of Apollo 11. Throughout the summer, the library will also have Marvel Kits. Marvel Kits are STEAM (science, technology, engineer, art, mathematics) kits that con-tain various activities including circuitry, virtual reality, robotics,
and more. The kits will be available for use in the library.
