2020

FROM THE SUPERVISOR’S DESK

As we ring in the New Year, we begin with our New Year’s resolutions, renewed energy, purpose and drive. We are thankful for so much, especially for the people in our lives – loved ones, family, friends and acquaintances.

The Senior Center provides a great opportunity for our senior citizens to socialize, seek support services, meet new friends, enjoy a delicious meal, learn a new skill, exercise, knit/crochet for charity, sing, play an instrument, paint, shoot pool, volun-teer and become informed and involved. Come for a free hearing screening from Island Better Hearing on January 8. Don’t miss out on free hot chocolate with marshmallows at the Centerport Senior Beach House on January 19! This month we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 22 with a special meal and a movie. Then, join in on the fun at the Snowflake Ball on the 29th for music and dancing with DJ Bob!

A Town of Huntington program you may not have heard of is our Youth Bureau's Project Excel program, which is comprised of local youths, ages 14-18, who are ready, able and willing to work. All of these young residents are available to be hired for house cleaning, yard work, snow shoveling, leaf raking, garage cleanout and more. These young residents have completed Project Excel’s Employment Workshop and have been screened. For more information, please call Project Excel at (631) 271-5499.

The Town of Huntington Adult Day Care program located at the Senior Center has been providing activities and care for frail seniors for 35 years. The compassionate staff, varied activities, including yoga, Brain Gym, and the Pitch Pipe pro-gram, run by an original member of the Brooklyn Bridge music group, all make for an outstanding service for our community members who need extra attention and support. This month they will have a Winter Dance Party with George Maselli on the 15th. Please call (631) 351-3293 for more information and to schedule a visit!

I am so proud to serve the wonderful residents of the Town of Huntington and wish you all a prosperous, healthy and happy New Year!

Chad A. Lupinacci, Supervisor Town of Huntington

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Local public transportation is available Monday through Saturday. The Town of Huntington’s HART system (631) 427-8287 and Suffolk County Transit (631) 852-5200 operate a network of regularly scheduled bus routes that serve many of the places seniors might want to travel, including the Senior Center. Buses are handicap accessible. Senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders are eligible to pay reduced fares.

Minibus service is also provided, at somewhat higher fares to persons who are prevented from using the regular buses because of a disability. This paratransit service is operated on a shared-ride, advance-request, curb-to-curb basis by HART (for rides entirely within the Town of Huntington) and Suffolk County’s SCAT program (for rides within Suffolk but not entirely within the Town). Both agencies require prior enrollment by application. Personal travel assistance is limited. HART also extends paratransit service, with reduced priority, to non-disabled senior citizen residents who do not drive and do not have access to regular buses. Paratransit is not offered as a more convenient alternative to regularly scheduled buses. For information, call HART at (631) 427-8287 (TTY: 800-662-1220) and SCAT at (631) 853-8337 (TTY:853-5658). Bus schedules are available at the Senior Center.
