St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. In order to bea community where all ages feel welcome, we provide coloring materials for children touse during worship and seek to be a community that understands the specic gifts andchallenges that children bring. We encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so,

to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if theycan see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through theKitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the servicebegins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply,

and reect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayeror one like it in preparation for worship.

    Collect of the Day:

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask andour ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give usthose things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannotask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns withyou and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    First Reading: Wisdom 12:13,16-19All sit.

Through the care of his people, and by allowing for their repentance, God demonstrateshis power balanced with loving-kindness.

A Reading from the book of Wisdom.

There is no god besides you, whose care is for all people, to whom you should prove thatyou have not judged unjustly; for your strength is the source of righteousness, and yoursovereignty over all causes you to spare all. For you show your strength when peopledoubt the completeness of your power, and you rebuke any insolence among those whoknow it. Although you are sovereign in strength, you judge with mildness, and with greatforbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose.

Through such works you have taught your people that the righteous must be kind, and youhave lled your children with good hope, because you give repentance for sins.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

and glorify your Name for evermore.

13 For great is your love toward me; *you have delivered me from the nethermost Pit.

14 The arrogant rise up against me, O God,and a band of violent men seeks my life; *they have not set you before their eyes.

15 But you, O Lord, are gracious and full of compassion, *slow to anger, and full of kindness and truth.

16 Turn to me and have mercy upon me; *give your strength to your servant;and save the child of your handmaid.

17 Show me a sign of your favor,

so that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed; *because you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

    Second Reading: Romans 8:18-25

Paul declares that those who have chosen to follow Jesus can live in joyful hope becausethey are sons and daughters adopted by God.

A Reading from Pauls letter to the Church in Rome.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with theglory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealingof the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because ofhim who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage tocorruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know thatthe whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And notonly the creation, but we ourselves, who have the rstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardlyas we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope wewere saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we

hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

    Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30,36-43All stand.

Jesus cautions those who are tempted to root out those who do not meet certain criteria.A community that tries to cast out the unrighteous will harm the righteous as well.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______.People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus put another parable before the crowds, saying, The kingdom of heaven may becompared to a man who sowed good seed in his eld, but while his men were sleeping, hisenemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants cameup and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the

house came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your eld? How thendoes it have weeds? He said to them, An enemy has done this. So the servants said tohim, Then do you want us to go and gather them? But he said, No, lest in gathering theweeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds rst and bind them in bundlesto be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying,Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the eld. He answered, The one who sows

the good seed is the Son of Man. The eld is the world, and the good seed is the sons ofthe kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed themis the devil. The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as theweeds are gathered and burned with re, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son ofMan will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and alllaw-breakers, and throw them into the ery furnace. In that place there will be weepingand gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their

Sermon: The Rev. Joseph B. Howard

    TheNiceNe creed

Webelieve in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

    For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and gloried.

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to newlife in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all thecompany of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus: S-130Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

    Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or stand at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your innite love you made us for yourself; and, when we

had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one ofus, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of

me.After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

    Christ has died.

Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrice of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

    AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

    A Note on Todays Readings

    Proper 11, Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. As we continue, Sunday by Sunday, to read the Gospelaccording to Matthew, we are in a section containing Jesus parables concerning thekingdom of God. This parable of the wheat and the weeds reafrms Gods patiencewith the church. While we are often impatient with its imperfections, God is merciful

and waits until the end-time before separating the good from the bad. We are urged byJesus to grow into fruitful members of Gods family.

The rst reading, from the Wisdom of Solomon, also afrms Gods forbearance andmercy. We are to exercise righteousness in our relationships to others, and by ourrepentance, our turning back to God.

In the second reading we are assured by Paul that the whole creation is moving towardredemption. In this passage, in fact, it is stated that our redemption is the condition for

the redemption of the whole creation.

We share in the eucharistic action in order that Gods redemptive power may lead ustoward the kingdom. We share also in order that we may be the means by whichredemption comes to the whole creation. That is our vocation as the people of Godand as members of the Body of Christ.
