TU Delft’s mission
“TU Delft is dedicated in making a
significant contribution to finding
responsible solutions to societal
problems, at both a national and
international level. Our mission is
to deliver Science to Society.
Open Science is an important way
to spread our mission around the
world.”

3TU.Datacentrum data repository
• ‘Frozen’ dataset (version) for
future use & long term storage
• ‘Published’ data: visible
• Open (max. 2 years embargo):
shareable
• Persistent digital object identifier
(DOI): findable and citable
• Sustainable formats: readable
• Data Seal of Approval: safe and
secure
15
John-Alan’s reasons
• His funder (NWO) is moving toward
requiring open research data
• Idealism: science requires openness and
sharing and public funds -> public data
• With metrics his dataset is citable and
usage can be tracked
• Self-protection: ‘lost’ data not acceptable
• Ease of use: Data is safely backed-up
• Ease of use: Data can be shared by
sending one url/doi
16
John-Alan’s process
• Selected data (ready to be ‘frozen’,
supports a publication)
• Format data into .csv, .dat, .txt, etc.
with descriptive headers
• Write ‘read me’ files (with equations)
• Uploaded raw data from
experiments and further analysis to
3TU.Datacentrum and obtained DOI
• Submitted publication with link to
data
17
John-Alan’s results
• Reviewer checked data &
suggested additions >
supplementary dataset
• 1 conference paper and 1
journal paper based on data,
both cite dataset
• Approached by Italian
researcher with computer model
in need of experimental data :
could share data by e-mailing 1
url/doi
