MONDAY 5 NOVEMBER

The EUROSAFE approach, developed by the European Technical Safety Organisations Network (ETSON) and its partners, includes the annual EUROSAFE Forum, the EUROSAFE Tribune and the EUROSAFE website.

The general aim of EUROSAFE is to contribute to fostering the con-vergence of technical nuclear safety practices in a broad European context. This is done by providing technical safety and research organisations, safety authorities, power utilities, the remaining nuclear industry, international organisations and non-governmental organisations with a platform for the presentation of recent analy-ses and R&D in the field of nuclear safety, to share experiences, exchange technical and scientific opinions, and conduct debates on key issues in the fields of nuclear safety and radiation protection.

The 2012 EUROSAFE Forum focuses in its plenary part on Enhanced Robustness in Nuclear Safety from the point of view of several stake-holders. On the second day the latest work carried out by ETSON (European Technical Safety Organisations Network) and associated members Bel V, GRS, IRSN, JNES, LEI, PSI, SEC-NRS, SSTC-NRS, ÚJV, VTT, VUJE and their partners will be presented in two full-day seminars (“Nuclear installation safety - assessment and research”, “Radiation protection, environment and emergency preparedness”), two half-day seminars (“Waste, decommissioning and dismantling”, “Security of nuclear installations and materials”) and a poster exhibition.

The highest level of nuclear safety is more than ever a priority in the global use of nuclear energy. Technical Safety Organisations play an important role in contributing to that objective through appropriate approaches to major safety issues as part of their assessments and research activities.

The challenges to nuclear safety are international. Changes in un-derlying technologies, the impact of electricity market deregulation, demands for improved safety and risks management, the ageing of nuclear facilities, waste management, maintaining and improv-ing scientific and technical knowledge, learning the lessons from nuclear accidents and the need for greater transparency – these are all issues where the value of an international approach is gaining increasing recognition.

A closer collaboration is required between all technical and scientific organisations involved in nuclear safety worldwide and more conver-gence in European nuclear safety practices is essential. EUROSAFE aims to respond to these needs.
