Quarterly Report (April – June 2017)

Project Title: Towards Empowerment of Women Farmers in Vidarbha

PIA: M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai

Following is a brief account of the work done in the project during the quarter, April – June

2017, on various thematic areas:

1. Institutional Building:

• Above 1181 samiti members across 22 villages have actively participated in

gramsabhas held in January 2017. Many of the issues raised by samiti members are

common which are as follows

a. Construction of toilets

b. Work under Jal Shivar Yojana (Soil & Water Conservation)

c. Utilisation of 10% of panchayat income for women and children

d. Formation of committees for Total sanitation in village.

• Raveri in Ralegaon taluka won the taluka level first prize of ten lakh rupees for active

participation in Adarsha Gram Yojana (Ideal Village Programme). Due to active

participation of samiti members in the programme proper community mobilisation

happened which resulted into getting the first prize.

• Women farmers from village Chikana of Ralegaon block submitted a memorandum to

BDO, Ralegaon to have the effective facility for drinking water in village.

• 112 samiti members from 21 villages availed loan from federation to the tune of

Rs.7,87,000/- to use for agriculture inputs and small enterprise like vermicomposting,

noodle making, poultry, pulveriser and grocery.

• Wardha and Deoli block level federation offices were inaugurated by MSRLM

officials and the federations shall handle their operations independently.

• As a result of the visit of Mr. Shailesh Naval, Collector, Wardha to CFC at Lonsavali

on 25th October 2016 he passed the order to set up new 8 CFCs and strengthen 3 old

CFCs. Therefore new eight CFCs are set up in 8 villages and 3 old CFCs are

strengthened by adding some more implements. All CFCs are inaugurated at the

hands of different government officials including MSRLM officials. District Collector

was present for two inaugurations.

• Convergence to the tune of Rs.1,40,47,809/- happened under agriculture, health and

social welfare schemes in the project. Much of the convergence happened through

  

  

samitis who forwarded individual proposals to the concerned departments. The samiti

members benefitted mainly from farm pond, dug well, bullock cart, toilets, gharkul

and some medical facilities All three federations have played a crucial role in creating

awareness to samitis.

• Three Common Facility Centers (Custom Hiring Centers) are useful to the villagers

and in this quarter 144 women farmers have availed the services through which the

rent to the tune of Rs.11,923/- was generated.

• Vimal Karanake, samiti member from Bodad has been identified as a Pashu Sakhi and

she has started providing advice and treatment to cattle.

• ASK Delhi has provided training to all three federation EC members. The trainings

were provided on the concept of federation, conduct of General Body and Executive

Committee meeting of federation, leadership and screening process for credit. All the

trainings were conducted in MSSRF, Wardha.

2. Sustainable Agriculture Practices:

1. 342 samiti members from 7 villages had an exposure visit to KVK, Selasura.

2. 2148 samiti members have been trained on soil sample collection and soil test.

3. 746 samiti members are trained on proper method of threshing, cleaning and grading

4. 669 samiti members have provided capacity building training on sowing across slope.

Major Adoptions of SA practices:

• 485 samiti members adopted farm bunding in 1017 acres of land.

• 2401 samiti members adopted cleaning and grading method for tur.

Other achievements:

• Advisory on SAP and household food security are used by 3040 members.

3. Household Food Security:

Promotion of activities that enhance access to food grains, vegetables and fruits for

women farmer’s households has been an important component of MKSP

• 953 (29%) samiti members have maintained Kitchen Gardens having 4 groups –

green leafy vegetables, fruits, other vegetables, roots and tubers in both Wardha

and Yavatmal districts even in summer.
