La conciencia de la mestizo1/Towards a New ConsciousnessGLORIA ANZALDUA

    When Gloria Anzaldua speaks of a "new consciousness," she's talking about creating a new self, about expe riencing the world in a different way. She envisions a cultural evolution bringing new understandings of race, gender, class , and nationality. And in writing of themes t iza consciousness and the mu ltiple cultures from w hich it arises, sheuses a new language a hybrid of English, Castilian Spanish, a NorthMexican dialect, Tex-Me x, and the Indian language Nahuatl. Anzalduais editor of H a c i e n d o C a r a s : M a k i n g F a c e / M a k i n g S o u l (1990) andcoeditor of Th is B ridg e C al l ed My B ack : W rit ing s b y Radica l W omen ofC o l o r (1983). This selection is from her book B o r d e r l a n d s = L a F r o n t -era : Th e N ew Mes t iza (1987). Although we've provided translations, wesuggest that you no t consult these in your first reading. Concentrateinstead on Anzaldua's main po ints and on her innovative blend ofargumen t and poetry, of myth and manifesto.
