Look Ahead’s Recovery Centre is a community resource for people affected by mental health issues. It is a shared space which promotes positive health and wellbeing by offering recovery focused activities to support individuals to manage their conditions and pursue their goals and aspirations. We reflect the recovery principles of hope, choice, control and opportunity.

The concept of recovery is about exercising choice and staying in

control of life despite experiencing a serious mental health condition. It is a personal journey and also refers to the steps you take to rebuild a purposeful and satisfying life.

We have received funding from the Tower Hamlets Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to deliver the Toward Recovery project.

Introduction

During January and February 2015, we are offering ten recovery focused learning sessions, open to anyone in the Tower Hamlets community affected by mental health issues. The sessions are designed and delivered by people with personal and professional experience of mental health.

Toward Recovery is based on the Recovery College model, which represents a shift away from the medical model of treatment. Instead, it takes an educational and collaborative approach to recovery,

through which everyone can learn and share together.

We hope you enjoy looking through this prospectus, and that you find a learning session which interests you. We look forward to meeting you.

Understanding Mental Health: The System and Me

Being told that we have a mental health issue can be daunting. It can come as a surprise and feel as though our world has completely changed. It could also be a welcome relief as it can offer reasons for how we are feeling. Some people feel a little lost and experience strong emotions.

This course will help you understand what your diagnosis means for you, and through shared experience, provide ways to deal with the impact on yourself and others.

If you enrol on this session, you might want to sign up to Understanding Mental Health : Knowledge and Tool Kits as well, which will go into specific diagnoses in detail.

Session 1: Receiving a diagnosisDate: Tuesday 27th Jan 2015Time: 14.30 -17.30

Location: Idea Store Whitechapel, 321 Whitechapel Road E1 1BU

Session 2: Accessing helpDate: Wednesday 4th Feb 2015Time: 17.00 - 20.00

Understanding Mental Health: Knowledge and Toolkits

As Tower Hamlets is a culturally diverse and dynamic community, we have developed a session focusing on diagnoses which particularly affect people living here. The session will cover depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia.

We will cover the symptoms and treatments for these conditions, as well as sharing personal stories about living with them.

You can enrol on this session without attending Understanding Mental Health: The System and Me, although you might find it useful if you can enrol on both.

Mental Health: Through My Eyes

Everyone has a story to tell, and a right for it to be told. The day to day experience of having or supporting someone with mental health difficulties can be overwhelming, and sometimes we find it hard to express ourselves.

This session is designed to help you create your own personal story of living with mental health. We will be using creative forms of expression such as photography, drawing and writing to explore our experiences and celebrate who we are. No previous experience of the creative arts is required!

Carers and families play a vital role in the support of someone who is experiencing mental health issues. Learning how to balance life and care responsibilities, managing our own wellbeing and understanding the impact we have is incredibly important.

This session will help you to develop a holistic understanding of your experience of caring for others, encourage you to take care of your own wellbeing and establish strong supportive links with others. We will also discuss how to get good information about carers rights.
