BEACHCOMBER INTRODUCTION 5

If you’re interested in Mauritius or the Seychelles for your holiday or

honeymoon you’ll already know these are beautiful destinations… so

why should you consider making your travel plans with Beachcomber?

For a start, we are not a worldwide travel company! We have purposely

chosen to focus in areas where we own our own luxury hotels, so our

experience and local knowledge is unmatched. Beachcomber is also a

small, specialist company with independent status, which makes

arranging your holiday much more personal. With over 20 years of

expertise in Mauritius and the Seychelles, you can rely on our personal

recommendations and enthusiasm to get everything just right for

your holiday.

THE FIRST, THE BEST, THE EXCLUSIVE

Beachcomber was the first hotel company on the island of Mauritius,

so we had the pick of the prime locations and beaches – with us you

are assured of the best addresses, whichever of our eight outstanding

hotels you choose. In the Seychelles, Beachcomber owns the

exclusive Sainte Anne Resort & Spa, which is the only hotel on the

private paradise island of Sainte Anne.

Each Beachcomber hotel offers individual appeal and exceptional

service, and with our inside-out knowledge you can be assured of

the right room and the right activities to make your stay a ‘once in a

lifetime’ experience. We can create a holiday that answers everything

you are looking for, whether that means unforgettable family fun,

exciting land and water sports, undisturbed romance – or possibly

all of these!

THE BEAUTY OF EXPERIENCE

At Beachcomber we take the time to talk to you, find out what you

want, and give your booking individual attention. You can ask us for

different room plans, see restaurant sample menus, talk over the best

places for deep-sea fishing, organise children’s activities, or create

the ultimate romantic honeymoon.

We find that many people choose Beachcomber to celebrate a

special occasion, or to spend precious time together as a family.

We know you can’t put a price on this time away, and it is always

a pleasure and a privilege to give you a holiday you won’t find

with any other travel company.

DEDICATED TO YOU

As we only offer our own hotels in Mauritius and Sainte Anne Resort

& Spa in the Seychelles we can give your holiday the true specialist

touch. Please take a look at our unrivalled locations, discover award-

winning hotel cuisine, fantastic land and water sports, complimentary

children’s clubs and our team of dedicated wedding planners. See

how you could learn to water-ski, take advantage of all-inclusive

packages that include champagne… and above all, let yourself

experience the best. And, when you come to book, think

Beachcomber first. We believe our experience and inspiration

will give you all the difference.

Beachcomber’s Sainte Anne Resort & Spa is the only hotel on the tranquil island of Sainte Anne – we believe it gives you the complete Seychellesexperience in one beautiful resort. Beachcomber chose this island with care; it is located in the protected waters of the Sainte Anne NationalMarine Park where there are no motorised sports or water-skiing – the surrounding Indian Ocean waters are crystal-clear for the ultimate insnorkelling and scuba-diving, and the white sandy beaches are pristine.

Our hotel has a fantastic position (just 10 minutes off Mahé by boat) – it’s the perfect base to explore the exotic wildlife and untouched beachesof nearby islands on fascinating day-trips. Our first-hand knowledge of the Seychelles is at your fingertips, so do ask for our opinions on the bestcoves to snorkel amongst colourful tropical fish, and where you can glimpse rare turtles. One of the reasons Beachcomber hotels are so special is that they all

offer a fantastic array of free land and water sports. An instructor is on

hand to teach skills for most activities. If you have a particular interest,

such as learning to sail or deep-sea fishing, please let us know when

you book and we can suggest the best resort for you.

UNRIVALLED WATER SPORTS

All of our Mauritius hotels have the perfect conditions for water sports

of all kinds. The warm Indian Ocean waters of Mauritius are protected

by a coral reef that keeps them safe and calm.

In the Seychelles, because Sainte Anne Resort & Spa is located in the

protected waters of Sainte Anne Marine Park, we do not offer

motorised water sports. This preserves the natural peace and beauty

of the environment. You can still enjoy plenty of alternatives such as

diving, snorkelling and kayaking.

ALL OUR HOTELS INCLUDE FREE:

Snorkelling trips – if you are a keen snorkeller we do recommend

you take your own equipment

Glass-bottom boat trips

Kayaks

Pedalos

Free group lessons for many water sports

Only available at hotels on Mauritius:

Water-skiing with some of the best instructors on Mauritius

Sailing

Windsurfing

Please note that water sports are time, weather and tide dependent.

DIVING

All of our hotels offer PADI or CMAS affiliated dive centres with a

comprehensive programme of dives. At Shandrani, if you are a

qualified PADI diver, diving is free! At all other hotels there is a

charge for diving.

DEEP-SEA FISHING

All Beachcomber hotels offer deep-sea fishing trips, either from the

hotels themselves or just a short drive away. Fishing is excellent in

Mauritius, with the best marlin season from November to March.

Paradis has its own fleet of five deep-sea fishing boats making it a

great choice for keen fishermen.

OUTSTANDING LAND SPORTS

At each and every one of our hotels you’ll find a great range of land

sports to enjoy:

Floodlit tennis courts and racquets are free for guests – you just

need to purchase tennis balls. All tennis centres offer the latest

BEACHCOMBER IMPORTANT INFORMATION 71

PASSPORTS & VISASBritish citizens require a full ten-year British passport for Mauritius and

the Seychelles with at least six months’ validity remaining by the date

of your return from holiday. We will update you, if you have booked,

when requirements change. However, it is your responsibility to check

the latest information in good time before travel. If you or any member

of your party is not a British citizen or holds a non-British passport,

please check with the appropriate Government department of the

country to (or through) which you are intending to travel. Please also

be careful when it comes to children’s passports. Your local Post

Office will also be happy to advise. IMPORTANT: We cannot accept

responsibility if you are refused entry onto any transport or into any

country due to failure on your part to carry the correct documentation.

If failure to do so results in fines, surcharges or other financial

penalties being imposed on us, you will be responsible for

reimbursing us.

TICKETS & DOCUMENTATION It is important that you check your invoice, tickets (particularly that

names and initials are correct and match your passport details) and

all other documentation carefully as soon as you receive them.

Contact us immediately if any information appears to be incorrect or

missing. After we have received your payment, and approximately two

weeks prior to departure, you will be sent your travel documentation.

Please check your flight times carefully on your ticket, as these are

subject to change and may well vary from those on the confirmation

invoice. Please note: all tickets issued are non-changeable and non-

refundable. Remember, you must check in approximately two to three

hours before take-off for most flights, particularly in light of the

heightened security checks at airports. Airlines will often allocate seats

on a first come first served basis: we advise you to check-in as early

as possible, so that if you are travelling in a party, you are less likely to

be separated. Both British Airways and Emirates offer convenient on-

line check-in services that enable you to check-in, choose your own

seat and issue your boarding pass from the comfort of your home

or office. The service is available from 24 hours before your flight

departure (72 hours if travelling with children on British Airways).

By using Online Check-in you’ll save time spent queuing at the airport.

To check-in on-line go to www.ba.com or www.emirates.com

PRE-SEATING ON AIRCRAFTClients booked in most premium classes and limited economy

classes can still be pre-assigned seating, however, the seating

available will be limited and, once this limit is reached, airlines will

only allocate seats during the check-in process and this cannot be

overridden. Please note, however, that pre-assigned seats cannot be

guaranteed and do not constitute a term of your contract with us. All

airlines operate a no smoking policy on their aircraft.

SEASONS, GROUPS AND OTHER GUESTSBoth Mauritius and the Seychelles have an ‘off peak’ season and during

this period, you will often benefit from excellent prices. The properties

we feature may take this quiet period to withdraw a few facilities: for

example, a pool for cleaning or renovation, or the temporary closure of a

restaurant. Occasionally the hotels will accept groups which we have no

control over. During your stay, they may take over restaurants and

facilities for events. It is not possible to notify you of any of these

changes before you travel and we cannot accept any responsibility for

any inconvenience caused.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTSNo vaccinations are required for Mauritius and the Seychelles. It is

your responsibility to comply with any health requirements such as

vaccinations. These requirements do change; therefore it is wise to

consult your doctor at your earliest opportunity. We recommend that

you obtain a copy of the Department of Health leaflet ‘Advice on

Health for Travellers’ available from your ABTA travel agent or the

Department of Health. If you have a medical condition or if you are

pregnant, then you must get clearance to travel from your own doctor.

Pregnant passengers are not accepted by most airlines after 28

weeks of gestation. Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne infection, has

been recorded in Mauritius and the Seychelles. Instances of tourist

infection are rare, however, we recommend precautions are taken to

minimise mosquito bites. We recommend our clients take along and

use mosquito repellent. If you require further information please do

not hesitate to contact us.

CURRENCY & CREDIT CARDS The £ sterling, Euro and US $ are all widely exchanged, and most

major credit cards are accepted for payment of hotel accounts.

Please note, in the Seychelles your extras accounts are required to

be settled in a foreign currency such as £ sterling or US $ or by credit

card. It is not advisable to purchase Seychelles rupees before you

travel, as they are rarely required in the islands.

HOTEL CHECK-IN / CHECK-OUTCheck-in is normally 15.00 and check-out by 11.00. Some hotels will

try to accommodate early arrivals and late departures. However, in

order to guarantee early check-in or a day room on departure, we

can reserve the accommodation at a supplement beforehand.

OVERSEAS ACCOMMODATIONEach country has its own star rating system for its hotels. We

therefore do not mention star ratings in our brochure or website

but try to describe the hotels accurately through words and pictures.

Star ratings promoted in any other brochure or website are therefore

not our responsibility. For the record, our website is

72 BEACHCOMBER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Accommodation in the tropics does bring with it the local wildlife.

Insects, reptiles, small mammals and rodents may be a feature, but in

no way does this imply that the accommodation is unhygienic. They

are simply a fact of life in these destinations.

SPORTSIt is your responsibility to satisfy yourself as to applicable insurance (if

any) and local laws, particularly for water sports, and activities are

generally at your own risk. Please be aware, if you wish to take part in

scuba-diving you may be required to show a doctor’s certificate to

confirm medical fitness. If you are a particularly keen diver, it is always

a good idea to have this certificate with you. It is also important to

check children’s ages for scuba-diving before you depart. Water

sports service may vary during the year depending on the weather

conditions and tides. Please ensure you wear appropriate attire for all

sports, particularly footwear. Please also bear in mind that any

sporting equipment you intend to take will form part of your luggage

allowance, although some airlines may exclude sporting goods from

your luggage allowance. Please ask for full details when booking. In

the Seychelles, there are luggage restrictions of 10 to 15kg per person

on most island-hopping flights. Scuba-divers taking their own gear will

need to pack carefully, as in some cases when travelling in small

aircraft, excess luggage is not allowed. Motorised water sports are

prohibited at Sainte Anne Resort in the Seychelles.

SPECIAL REQUESTSAny special request must be advised in writing if it was not already

stated on your original booking form. We will make every reasonable

effort to make the arrangements. We do not have any legal liability

whatsoever to you in the event of non-compliance. We regret we

cannot accept any conditional booking (i.e. any booking that is

specified to be conditional on the fulfilment of a particular request).

WEDDING PARTIESIf you are going to be travelling with a wedding party you must advise

us at the time of booking what special arrangements you require as

the hotels do have to ensure that they are able to cater properly for

your group. This includes arrangements for private dining, the ability

for the hotel to cater for guests not staying with you at the hotel and

any other personal arrangements you may require.

LUGGAGE ALLOWANCEAs a guide, 20kg in Economy Class, 30kg in Business Class and 40kg

in First Class are the allowances for international flights from the UK to

the Indian Ocean. However, we recommend you confirm with the

airline directly before you fly. Excess baggage is charged at the

airline’s own rates.

Please note there are strict restrictions on the size and weight of luggage

allowed on helicopter transfers. This is particularly the case in Mauritius,

where baggage will be transferred by road at an additional cost, which

may be payable locally. Please ask for full details when booking.

Please note, if you are planning to get married abroad, due to carry-

on baggage restrictions, airlines cannot guarantee that you will be

able to take your wedding dress on board. We recommend, therefore,

that you ask the dressmaker to pack the dress in a travelling box or a

hard-sided suitcase.

WEATHER & PUBLIC UTILITIESTemperatures are a guide only, and may fluctuate throughout the

seasons. ‘0’ in the average rainfall guides represents rainfall of less

than half an inch.

Public utilities, such as water and electricity, are taken for granted in

Britain, but on tropical islands there may be hiccups in the supply. With

worldwide weather becoming more erratic and harder to predict, we

cannot be held responsible for a disruption to your holiday due to bad

weather. The weather in Mauritius between June and September can

be fairly changeable with some cloud cover, and it is important to note

that, although Mauritius is a year-round destination, it can be chilly in

the evenings and windy, with potential persistent rainfall at times

during this period. Cyclones occur occasionally in Mauritius (usually in

January and February), which may result in a couple of days of heavy

rain and winds, However, at this time of year, the weather is still

generally hot with prevalent sunshine. The Seychelles experience two

trade winds. The South East Trade Winds are prevalent from May to

September when it will be drier, breezier, and slightly cooler than

during the remainder of the year. This also means that between May

and August currents are stronger, often bringing sea grass onto some

of the beaches. The North West Trade Winds are prevalent from

October to April. This is a much calmer breeze, which results in

increased humidity and calmer seas. Higher rainfall occurs during this

time of year. The Seychelles experience quite a lot of rain at all times of

the year, but this mostly occurs in brief showers followed again by

tropical sunshine.

Wherever you travel, please ensure you take the necessary

precautions to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.

CLOTHINGAs the weather is generally warm all year round, cool lightweight

clothing is recommended. If travelling to Mauritius between June and

August, it is well-worth taking some warmer clothing with you for the

evening. Most of our hotels operate an elegantly casual approach to

dining in the evening, with gentlemen requested to wear long trousers

and collared shirts, and jeans are not acceptable in some restaurants.

However, you do need to appreciate that some nationalities’

interpretation of ‘elegantly casual’ may differ from the British point

of view.

SAFETY FEATURES Please note, we cannot guarantee lifeguards are on duty at the

swimming pools at all times. Some do have a sign indicating this and

that swimming is at your own risk. Please be cautious, particularly with

children. The depth and design of hotel pools vary. We suggest in all

cases that you familiarise yourself with each pool, particularly prior to

any diving. We also advise extra care when staying in accommodation

with private pools. This can be very dangerous for young children, when

not supervised for a split second. The government offers advice on

safety on Ceefax BBC2 (page 470 onwards) or on the Internet:

www.fco.gov.uk When our hotels provide cots for infants, it is suggested

that parents satisfy themselves with the safety features prior to use, and

particular caution should be exercised with regard to room facilities.

transferred by road at an additional cost which will need to be

pre-paid. Please ask for full details when booking.

ADDITIONAL SEYCHELLES INFORMATIONThe currency is the Seychelles rupee. However, settlement of bills in

hotels must be made in foreign currency. The £ sterling, Euro and US

$ are widely accepted. It is not advisable to purchase rupees before

you travel, as they are rarely required on the islands.

SEA GRASSDuring certain times of the year some of the Seychelles beaches get

covered in sea grass and hence the swimming from these beaches is

not ideal. However, as Sainte Anne has a choice of three beaches

there is usually a beach to enjoy.

CUISINELocal Creole cooking and seafood are specialities. Good quality

restaurants are rare and the best restaurants are found in the top hotels.

ISLAND TIMEExperience a slower pace of life. Whilst things get done in the

Seychelles, nothing happens immediately – it’s one of the reasons

that the islands are so relaxing.
