*This book was made not only to show my process for the semester in Experience Design but to also show the victories and frustrations I had in class.

*Not trying to be mean about it, just keeping it real.

This class required us to think of something that someone does in real life and find a way to make it more enjoyable in a virtual experience. Right away I knew I wanted to do something with video games, I just didn’t know what. I broke it down to what I enjoyed about them. With some feedback, I decided to work with LAN Parties. A LAN (Local Area Network) party is a gathering of gamers and non gamers where people bring computers or consoles and play and eat and enjoy each other. Unknown to me, this also would change as we got more into the semester.

So LAN Parties it was. Then it was time to start breaking down what happens at ones of these parties. The model you see on the right page is a quick breakdown to what goes into a LAN party. Once presented to the class, it was decided that more information was needed, that an instance in time needed to be captured. More was needed.

While working on the third model, I decided that tournaments play a big part of LAN parties so I started working with that rather than the whole party. The first two model that goes into tournament are more about the games Rockband and Halo. The one on the right page is just about a 32 player - 8 Bands tournament. All the rules and information for the tournament is seen here as well.

Rockband Tournament - Round 2- Band 1 vs. Band 4

After a good first round, round 2 is getting underway between Band 1and Band 4. Band 2 and 3 are out but have a chance to play for winning losers later on in the day.

After the trash talking session, Band 4 gets ready their instruments ready to play. The host sets up the game for Band 4 from his own console. Host picks “Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld” and puts it on hard difficulty. He lets Band 4 that the game is ready.

Host streams gameplay to Band 1 so they can watch. Song gets under way. Not too many mistakes were made by Band 4. Guitarist got 95 percent on solo. Song over with the score of 240,235.

Host writes down and announces the score that Band 4 got. Host also tells Both Bands that Band 1 is up in ten minutes.

Host opens channel for trash talking before starting the game. Band 4 wishes Band 1 good luck as they are not trash talkers. Band 1 doesn’t care to hear it and get themselves pumped up for the song.

Host streams gameplay to Band 4 so they can watch. Song gets under way. Band 4 is a little more sloppy in the way they play.

Band 4 moves on to the finals. Now Band 6 and 7 are up.Host opens up channel so that both bands can talk to each other. The round is over and Band 4 moves on to the finals.

Host writes down and announces the score that Band 1 got. Host announces the winner between Band 1 and 4 that Band 4 will be moving on the final round.

That mistake cost Band 1 the win. They finished with 190,125. Drummer feels really bad and apologizes to his band mates but they don’t want to hear it.

Half way through the song, Band 1’s drummer drops his drumsticks. This makes him fail and has to wait for someone to save him. His band mates are not happy and start talking shit to him.

Host gets on headset and announces round 2 between Band 1 and Band 4. Everyone gets quite and listens.

Host finds a coin toss generator. Band 1 calls tails. Host flips coin. Heads wins. Host sends screen shot to both bands of coin flipper. Band 4 wins toss. They will go first and pick the song.

Band 4 gets on their own channel and talk to each other. They pick “Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld”. Song is about 2:30 minutes long. They inform the host of the song they pick. Host informs the rest of the players.

Host opens channel for trash talking. Band 1 starts talking mad shit. Band 4 doesn’t say much, they would much rather let their playing do the talking.

Band 4

What song should we do? I’m thinking “Welcome Home”. What do you guys think?

Yeah that sounds good. So we all agree on that song and on hard?

I was thinking “Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld”. We all kick ass on that song and could

all play on hard. Plus, it’s a shorter song.

Band 4 Band 1

You guys suck! We are going to kick your ass all over the place with this song.

Oh you will see, you just wait!

Uh huh. We’ll see.

Band 1 Band 4

Good luck you guys!

Still, good luck!

Yeah yeah, we don’t need luck. We got this. We’re gonna beat your score easy, just watch!

Band 4 Band 1

Good game you guys. You guys really know this song. We want a rematch after the tournament.

Yeah that did suck. Oh well, we’ll get you next time!

Thank, good game to you too. Sorry your guy dropped the drumsticks. That sucked.

Message from Host

Band 1, you’re up in ten minutes.

Band 4 finishes with the score of 240, 235. Good job!

Message from Host

Band 4 moves on to the final round. Great job Band 4!

Band 1 finishes with the score of 190,125 making Band 4 the winner. Maybe next time Band 1.

As you can see, my first UI wasn’t a pretty one. It didn’t look like anything that belonged near an Xbox 360 but it did help me figure out exactly what needed to go into the final UI. The two main things I wanted to go into this was chat and a live feed of the game going on. At first I wanted all this to be viewable on one screen but later on, I see that doesn’t work.

This is what the final UI would look on the 360. The tournament part would have it’s own channel which would be assessable from the dashboard. From here, you can see what game is being played, a live game stream, the tournament bracket, information about the tournament, and options. In the now playing screen you wouldn’t be able to select anything, it’s there to show you what tournament you are playing.

The idea for the live game stream is that someone that wasn’t playing during the time could watch the other bands play. This would be a full screen view. On the top right, it gives you some information to the band playing, the song being played, and who is next. Also on this screen, you can see who is also watching on the left side. On the bottom would be a text chat for those people that don’t have a microphone. These could all turned off by hitting down on the D-pad for the text chat and left on the D-pad for the player list.

For the Information part of this, I wanted to make a section where a player could see exactly who is playing, the scores, and a better view of the bracket. The reason for so many colors is because those of the same color are on the same band. That color is also the band color.

This project has always been one of my lowest priorities and therefore suffered. I wish it wouldn’t of been that way, but graduation got in the way. If I could go back, I would of done this the way I wanted and not the way I was told. I had a different vision for this project but due to it being a low priority and my lack of caring, it went a different way.
