Afterwards the vic-torious army of Julius Caesar conquered the whole Armorican territory (the whole of Brittany).Darioritum, like it was called in these times developed itself on a hill (today the quar ter of St. Patern). Throughout the 3rd century the f irst protective wall was constructed as a protec-tion against barbaric tribes.

After the decline of the Roman Empire in the 5th century the name Darioritum was replaced by Venetis and the old site is abandoned and becomes a mere outskir t. In the following centuries the town develops inside the for tif ications and becomes one of the f irst Breton dioceses in the 5th century.

Between 1341 and 1364 wars of succession, two families claim the title of the Duke of Brittany, lead to a serious economic decline of the region. Vannes is besieged several times and f inally it is Jean IV. who wins this conf lict. Later he let build the castle de l’Hermine and expands the city wall in order to include the already f lourishing harbour district. In 1532 Francois I. stays in Vannes and prepares the eternal Union Treaty between Brittany and France. The exile of the Breton parliament in Vannes at the end of the 17th century led to a rapid development of the town into a f lourishing economic centre. Numerous new town-houses were built as well inside, as outside of the rampar ts.

In the second half of the 19th century the urbanisation of Vannes star ts to change the town considerably, especially after the arrival of the railway in 1862 and the installation of two ar tillery regiments in 1870. At the same time the new town hall, the prefecture and the cour t

house are inaugurated and new streets outside the rampar ts are built. For tunately Vannes has not been destroyed during the Second World War and today the city counts approximately 64000 inhabitants. Nowadays the city focuses more and more on tourism, a natural choice for this beautiful place with its medie-val quar ters, situated in direct neighbourhood to the Gulf of Morbihan.

Argoat or Brittany and its woodlandThe hinterland of Vannes extends itself as far as the moor land of Lanvaux. Countless water-courses run through the landside, some of them being branches of the Gulf of Morbihan. From its panoramic viewpoints one can even discern the “little sea” (Mor-Bihan in Breton). Numerous hiking trails lead the wanderer right into the heart of these highlands. He follows the trail of megalithic monuments, castles, country houses, fonts and calvaries and discovers thereby all the riches of the Argoat (the part of Brittany dominated by woodland) and its long history. The well conserved patrimony of this part of Brittany provides today’s visitor with an authentic insight into the life of the Breton people in former centuries. Festive evenings with Breton music and dances (festou noz) and other traditional festivities are taking place throughout the whole year and bring back the ancient times of Breton culture. Breton gastronomy or one of the numerous popular

saints, there are many reasons to host a festou noz for the po-pulation that is still today strongly attached to its cultural heri-

The Gulf of Morbihan is a veritable little inland sea. Just a narrow strait between Port Navalo and Locmariaquer separates it from the Atlantic Ocean. Protected from the swell 400 Million cubic metres of salt water are f lowing during each high tide into the 12000 ha. big Atlantic basin. Thou-sands of different plant and animal species live here in a peaceful coexistence with mankind. The Gulf is a unique place where heaven, land and sea meet and form a large variety of lands-capes, one more beautiful than the other, a spectacle that is always in change. The name Mor-bihan is of Breton origin and can be translated with “little sea”. The Gulf itself was created when a couple of thousands of years ago the region was f looded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf like we know it today was formed. The ocean extends itself far into the inland advancing as far a Vannes and Auray. Today the old hills enclosed by the water form an archipelago of countless small, sometimes tiny islands.

Circuit n°1 THE MEDiEVAL TOWN CENTRE AND iTS ARCHiTECTO-NiCAL TREASURESApproximately 1h30

This walk completely inside the ramparts lets you breathe the atmosphere of the different historic epochs from the Middle Ages until today. You discover Vannes, how it has been throughout different times in history.Porte St Vincent, Place des Lices, Vannes et sa femme, Château Gaillard, Rue des Halles and Rue St Salomon, town hall, Place Henri IV, the cathedral, la Cohue.

1 Porte St Vincent FerrierThe gate of St. Vincent built in the beginning of the 17th century and rebuilt after its destruction in the 18th century, is the most central of Vannes’ town gates. Since 1840 it is surrounded by buildings on its right and left hand side. These town houses form a semicircle around the popular place Gambetta with its cafes. Under the statue of St. Vincent Ferrier the patron saint of Vannes, one can see the city arms with the er-mine, symbol of Brittany, crowned with three towers. These towers symbolize the for tif ied town and are surrounded by two greyhounds. The dogs have been given as a present from the Bretons to the French King Francois II in 1532 when he stayed in Vannes.

2 Place des LicesThis place has already been created in the 14th century and conserved his original form until today. Nowa-days this former venue for tournaments is the market square of Vannes (Wednesdays and Saturdays). The Duke of Brittany resided in the Château de l’Hermine not far away from the place des Lices.

3 The house of “Vannes et sa femme”On the corner of a half-timbered house sits the f igure-head of Vannes et sa femme (Vannes and his wife). Be-fore becoming a popular motive for snapshots they might have been a simple company label but nowadays nobo-dy really knows anymore. They have been called Vannes et sa femme by the population of Vannes since the 19th century. A little bit higher on the building, just under the roof can be observed a statue of Francis of Assisi.

4 Château GaillardThis town residence has been built in the first half of the 15th century by Jean de Malestroit, who was the bishop of Nantes and chancellor of Duke Jean V. at this time. Today it accomodates the museum of archaeology and town his-tory. The four-storied building is amongst others remarkable for its windows and stair tower. Since 1912 it is in possession of the polymathic society of Morbihan.

5 Rue des Halles / Rue St SalomonThese two streets lined with half-timbered houses on both sides are lying in the heart of the town. The houses are interesting examples for housing in the Middle Ages and display a large variety of colours and building ma-terials. Worth seeing is especially the house number 13 in the rue Saint Salomon decorated with wooden lion heads. In consequence of this its also called the lion’s house.

6 The town hallApproaching the town hall the atmosphere changes. You are no longer in the medieval city, the streets be-come larger, there are sidewalks and according to town planning principles of the 19th century the buildings are placed in straight rows. The town hall was build between 1881 and 1886 and is a smaller copy of the Parisian town hall. The richly decorated façade symbolizes the prestige and the place of Vannes at that time.

This can also been seen inside the building with its im-pressive front stairs and the coloured windows showing the wedding of Anne de Bretagne with the French King Charles VIII in 1491.

7 Place Henri iVYou access this place via Rue E.Burgault. It is lined with half-timbered houses, whose construction was given up in the 17th century in favour of stone houses.

8 The cathedral St PierreThe cathedral that shows a large variety of different styles has been reconstructed throughout the 12th cen-tury on the ruins of the former edif ice. The oldest par t is the Romanesque belfry from the 13th century whereas the neo-Gothic façade was erected in the 14th century. The central nave and the sanctuary are from the 15th century and the transept was com-pleted in the 16th century. The Renaissance chapel of the holy sacrament has been added in 1536/7. Here one f inds the grave of the Spanish monk St Vincent de Ferrier, who died 1419 in Vannes and was canonised in 1456.

9 La Cohue, the Museum of Fine ArtsIn the Middle Ages the Breton word Cohue meant mar-ket place. This edif ice from the 13th century accommo-dated many tradesmen with their market stands on the ground f loor. During the exile of the Breton parliament (1675-1689) the f irst f loor was used as an assembly hall for the latter. Later in the 19th century the town’s thea-tre was based here and since 1986 it is the Museum of Fine Ar ts who exhibits its exposition in this historic edif ice. Passing by the Rue St Gwénael, right next to the cathedral you reach the quar ter of Saint Patern after a shor t walk.

Circuit n°2 : THE FORTiFiCATiONS

The development of the town’s fortif ications seen from the inside.Porte Saint Vincent, Porte Calmont, Porte Poterne, the washhouses (Lavoirs), Tour du Connétable, the Gallo-Roman town wall, Porte Prison, Porte St Jean.

Today three quarters of Vannes’ former for-tif ications are well conserved. Not all parts can be visited but on this circuit you will disco-ver the most important and interesting parts of it.

1 La porte St VincentSee circuit n°1After the gate you turn right into the Venelle de la Tour Trompette. This narrow alleyway leads you to the recently refurbished gate “Por te Calmont”.

2 La Porte CalmontThis town gate has been erected throughout the expan-sion of the Southern part of the town wall in the 14th century. It has a tower and two entries, one for carriages and the other one for pedestrians. These entries could be closed by draw-bridges. During a walk in the gardens one notices an impressive building, which has been built on the ruins of the former Château de l’Hermine. This building is today in possession of the city of Vannes.

3 La porte PoterneThis town gate (17th century) has no defensive use. From the 17th century on some of the par ts of the town wall have been sold or rented out. In the following the new owners built their residences for here. A virgin with child serves as decoration of the Por te Poterne.

4 Les LavoirsThe washhouses were built between 1817 and 1821 and are today one of the most well known monuments of Vannes. The laundresses found shelter under its wooden galleries whilst washing the laundry of the town in the Marle. The washhouses have been refurbished in 2006.Arriving here, you are at the foot of the bastion de la Garenne (17th century), the youngest element of the for tif ications. The adjacent gardens “à la française” are nowadays used as open-air tribune during the nume-rous processions in the summer months.

5 La Tour du ConnétableThe tower was erected in the 15th century and has been used as for tif ication as well as private residence. He carries his name in honour of Ar thur de Richemont who has been Duke of Brittany from 1457 until 1458. On its upper par ts f igure numerous machicolations.

6 The Gallo-Roman town wallBehind the tower of Joliette (15th century) you can access this oldest par t of the ramparts, which has already been erected in the 3rd century.

7 La Porte prisonDespite the loss of one of its towers this gate is the most impressive one. It has been built between the 13th and the 15th century and is one of the most impor tant elements of the town’s for tif ications. In the beginning it was called “Por te St. Patern”. The name changed when it was also used as prison in the 18th century.

8 La Porte St JeanThis gate (17th century) is completely embedded in the town’s constructions. In former times it had big wooden double wing doors. East from it lies the Tour du Bour-reau (15th century)

Circuit n°3 : THE DiSTRiCT OF ST PATERNA 15 minutes walk from the tourist office

Discover the oldest and most popular quar-ter of Vannes! Rue de la Fontaine, church of Saint Patern, Rue Saint Patern, Place Cabello, the prefecture.

St. Patern is the oldest par t of Vannes. It is located at the same place as the f irst Roman settlements from the 1st century B.C. The discovery of this quar ter with its many half-timbered houses resembles to a journey through history, with its street names evoking the dif ferent crafts of its former population e.g. Rue du Four (ba-ker) or Rue de la Tannerie (tanner). In the 19th cen-tury it changed into a place of enter tainment for the soldiers of the garrisons based in the town. With its numerous bars and restaurants it is still today very popular.Fur thermore there are two interesting buildings to visit in St. Patern:

1 The church of St PaternOverlooking the quar ter from a little hill, the church is named after the f irst bishop of Vannes who lived and worked here in the 5th century. Reconstructed in the 18th century Saint Patern constitutes still today one of the stations of the Breton pilgrimage named Tro Breizh (tour of Brittany). Its interior is decorated with a couple of very beautiful retables.

2 The prefectureThe prestigious building that was inaugurated in 1865 is surrounded by a big u-shaped park. Its gable is decorated with two impor tant Breton personalities: Nominoë and Anlain Barbetor te and a relief shows the imperial eagle and the scene of the arrival of the railway in 1862.

For the people loving a good walk we propose a tour lea-ding you from the harbour in Vannes to the Gulf of Morbihan alongside the ri-ver of Vannes. In 2,5 hours you reach the island of Conleau, that is connected

to the continent by a dam since the end of the 19th cen-

tury. This walk is very popular and leads you to the only beach of

Vannes and the point of departure of the ferries to l’Ile d’Arz, both of them situated

on Conleau.
