Baroque, intelligent, multi-faceted, fascinating,
surprising… these are a few of the words that describe
the character and style of Rubens. His works can be
admired worldwide: in London, Madrid, Munich, Paris,
St. Petersburg, Washington, Vienna and of course
Antwerp. In this versatile artist’s home base, visitors
can view his house, studio and grave.
Approximately 50 of his paintings and oil sketches
belong to the permanent offer of Antwerp museums
and churches. Most of them can still be found on the
original site where they were created nearly 400
years ago.
The name Rubens is forever linked to Antwerp, just
as that of Andy Warhol is to New York.

1.1. Rubens’ House
The Rubens House is a great evocation of a 17th century townhouse and artist’s home as well as Rubens’ living environment. In the museum visitors will experience Rubens as a successful self-made man with many talents. He was not only an experienced painter but also an architect, active diplomat, enthusiastic collector, scientist, husband and father. The height of the collection is ten works by Rubens, including a self-portrait, “Adam and Eve”, “Henry IV at the battle of Ivry” and a portrait of Antoon van Dyck as a young man

1.4. Our Blessed Lady Cathedral
After 169 years of construction (1352-1521) the cathedral rose as a stone lacework, 123 metres high above Flanders. This made the cathedral the tallest gothic building in the Netherlands. The cathedral is actually a huge treasure chamber with, among others, art works by Rubens. After 20 years or restoration work the church with seven aisles shines again in all its architectural glory.

1.5. Saint Carolus Borromeus Church
This is the Rubens church par excellence. Rubens played an important role in the decoration of the façade and the crowning of the tower. Jesuits built this typical baroque church between 1615 and 1621. The main altar’s apses, the Mary Chapel and the numerous sculptures and wood carvings are a testament to the earlier pomp and circumstance.

1.6. Saint Paul’s Church
Originally Saint Paul’s church was part of an extensive Dominican convent. It was consecrated in 1571 as a replacement for a former house of prayer. After a fi re in 1679, a new Baroque tower was built. The magnifi cent interior includes more than 50 paintings by famous Antwerp masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens; more than 200 sculptures, glorious Baroque altars and sculpted church furniture that is among the most beautiful in the world. The organ, dating back to the 17th century, has been repeatedly restored and expanded.

1.7. Saint Jacob’s Church
The church was built between 1491 and 1656 in the Brabant Gothic style. The upper classes, traders and nobility showed their prosperity by constructing a tower that was taller than that of the cathedral. However, for fi nancial reasons the tower could only be built 55 metres high. Within the church parishioners had better luck fl aunting their riches, which led to an impressive and opulently decorated interior.
Attention-Getters
Peter Paul Rubens’ grave behind the main alter in the Chapel of Our Lady. Rubens himself painted “Our Lady Surrounded by Saints” for his tombstone.

1.8. AMUZ: Augustine Music centre
Antwerp has a new concert hall: the Augustine Music Centre. AMUZ presents a varied programme based on old music, coupled with other genres, cultures and artistic productions. The name Augustine Music centre refers on the one hand to the unique setting of the secularised Saint Augustine Church, which was converted into a modern concert hall with respect for its cultural and historic value. On the other hand the name refers to the interaction the organisation strives for: gathering a large audience, young talent, ensembles in residence, nationally and internationally renowned artistes in a central meeting place around various types of music. With broad cultural diversity in programming, AMUZ aims to target as wide an audience as possible: faithful concert goers, music lovers who want to be pampered and cultural tourists visiting Antwerp, city of the arts. But those of you who wish to spend pleasant quality time are also more than welcome.
