Defining Culture

• Read page 148 in Canada Travels and record the definition of culture often used by Geographers

• Copy the diagram next to Fig. 6.2 and add branches to each of the characteristics to describe your own personal culture

• Get up and move! Find someone in the class who shares a different culture than your own. Compare your diagrams and tell them one thing that they may not know about your culture. “One thing you may not know about my culture is…”

• You will be responsible for sharing this with the rest of the class

Cultural Region KEY TERMS

CULTURE: Refers to the various characteristics of life (language, livelihood, religion, food, customs) that are shared by a group of people.

CULTURAL REGION: An area characterized by a common culture where people have one or more cultural traits, like language or religion, in common

CULTURAL TOURISM: Tourism designed to encourage people to experience the culture of a specific people and region

Europe: An Overview

• 6th largest continent, population ~ 740,000,000

• Despite sharing landmass with Asia, Geographers consider it a continent due to distinct cultural differences

• Europe separated from Asia by Ural Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas

• 47 countries (not including those shared with Asian continent) and assorted dependencies and territories

• Incredible global influence from early exploration, colonization, present day

Europe: A world power

• Let’s explore how and why Europe has become such a global powerhouse throughout history and to the present day.

• Evidence of European influence?

• Create an organizer like the one on the board. Pair up and use your reading material and identify examples of physical and human features in Europe that help to explain its global powerhouse status.

• Western Europe top tourist region in world due to:

• People’s historical/cultural ties

• Wide range of historical/cultural attractions

• Small continent means travellers can see many places in a short period of time

• Highly developed transportation and tourism industry

• Peaceful, accessible
