    TOURISM

    Indias most idyllic State, Kerala better known as Gods Own country is today one

    of the most sought after and most trusted tourist destination in Asia. Apart from being a

    tourist destination, Kerala is also Indias most advanced society. 100% literate, the state

    has Indias highest density of Science and technology personnel, Indias highest life

    expectancy and lowest infant mortality rates and is Indias cleanest, most peaceful state.

    Kerala, a state situated on the Tropical Malabar Coast of south western India, is

    one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Named as one of the Ten

    Paradises of the world by the National Geographic Traveler, Kerala is famous especially for

    its ecotourism initiatives. Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied

    demography, has made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

    Popular attractions in the state include the beaches at Kovalam, Cherai andVarkala, the hill stations of Munnar, Nelliampathi, ponmudi and Wayanad and National Parks

    and Wild life Sanctuaries at Periyar and Eravikulam. The back waters region center on

    Allappuzha, Kumarakom and Punnamada also see heavy tourist traffic. There are Heritage

    sites, such as the Padmanabhapuram palace, Hill Palace, Mattancherry palace. Cities such

    as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are popular centers for shopping, traditional theatrical

    performances.

    This chapter covers data pertaining to international and national tourist inflow,

    the key markets trends in tourist arrival and earning from tourist. It will provide important

    information to Planners; research Scholars, Academicians and the Stakeholders of Tourism

    Industry. Kerala achieves highest growth rate in tourist arrivals. The number of foreign

    tourist arrived in Kerala in the year 2007 is 515808 against 428534 in 2006. It shows an

    increase of 20.37% over the previous year. During the last year Kerala has contributed

    10.36% of the total foreign tourist arrivals to India.

    This chapter gives the details of foreign tourist arrival and Domestic Tourist

    arrival to Kerala during 1980 to 2007. Nationality wise statistics of foreign tourists and

    District wise, month wise arrivals of foreign and domestic tourists are entered for

    2004,2005, 2006. Foreign exchange earnings, total revenue including direct and indirect

    from Tourism from 2002 to 2006 are given in table. It is clear from the table that Tourism

    shows an increasing trend over the years.

    U.K. Maldives, Germany and France together contribute to more than 50% of

    foreign tourist arrivals to Kerala. About two third of foreign tourist come to Kerala by Road

    and Rail, after entering India through Other States.
