Tour Highlights (Open to members and partners)

‘Feilding Adventure’ (Friday)The Manawatu Area supports our large rural economy and this tour will give you a taste of rural action with a look at our rural history. Visit our first robot milking shed and hear how the healthy cows and technology have come together to produce a great life style for the owners. The world-renowned Feilding Sale Yards will be on the itinerary; Friday is sale day when country folk come to town. This experience will include a personal tour of the yards with a knowledgeable guide and if you feel inclined you can raise your hand to the auctioneer! Lunch, and browse the Coach House Museum which has an amazing collection of country history.

‘Te Horo Gastronomy Tour’ (Friday)One of our local star caterers is Ruth Pretty and she will entertain you at her home and garden in the southern region of our area. Learn from her cooking demonstration and enjoy a lunch in her beautiful home. Browse and be prepared to purchase from her Kitchen Shop, a cook’s treasure trove. Should we have more than the capacity number for Friday, this tour could be repeated on Sunday.

‘Rangitikei Experience’ (Sunday)For those interested in historical architecture, and wonderful country gardens, then this is a tour for you. You will be transported through some of our productive rural country and enjoy a finger lunch in a restful garden. On return to the city a visit to a beautifully manicured, large town garden, will totally amaze you.

Men’s Options (Saturday)With a full day planned for members, the cry from partners is “what about me?”. Private, small group tours can be arranged for options such as a game of golf, visit the rugby museum, windfarm, or motorbike museum. Expressions of interest to Robyn Higgins email: [email protected].

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ‘Te Manawa’

It is with very great pleasure that I invite you to attend the FASNZ AGM and Conference 2019 in Palmerston North. ‘Te Manawa’ (The Heart) indicates the central pulsing beat of this North Island town in the Manawatu. The local committee members have worked hard to facilitate a conference full of exciting happenings in early May. The main base will be the Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre in the centre of the city, which is a very quick walk to many accommodation options.

Academy members will meet up at the Copthorne Hotel, for a workshop, AGM and dinner on Thursday 2nd May. Most members will register on Friday 3rd May and the Diary Awards and Muriel De Stefano Award presentation will be held late afternoon, followed by the Official Opening, prizegiving and an informal ‘fork and walk’. This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with the competitors and fellow members.

A major highlight of the conference will be the 2019 National Designer of the Year Competition, where representatives from throughout the FASNZ Areas will do designing battle for the title of National Designer of the Year. There will also be six other competitive classes which, along with the DOY and Area designs, will form the basis of an exhibition which will be open to the public. The Show Schedule and Entry Forms will be sent out in February with Issue 73 of the Floral Focus magazine. There will be workshops, the Diary Awards and

Presentations, amazing tours, the AGM on Saturday morning including a presentation by guest speaker Bronwyn Groot, and the usual fun at the Dinner Dance ‘Wear your Heart on your Sleeve’, a brilliant opportunity for a little fun with costume!

We have Jean Shine attending from Western Australia who will present a Trends and Techniques session in a theatre setting. Jean will also lead a workshop for Academy Members and two more for the general membership. Members may also register as Observers. Workshops will not be balloted, but places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so get your registrations in promptly if you do not wish to be disappointed.

The tours cater for a range of tastes and are available to members and partners; the Te Horo Gastronomy tour will include lunch with Ruth Pretty – Ruth and her team put their hearts and souls into their catering, and you can be a part of that. More information on all the tours is included in this Brochure.

The Manawatu Area Conference Committee have worked hard to set the scene for a wonderful few days - come and celebrate the heart of designing with fabulous floral art as well as enjoying friendship in flowers.

Jean is based in Western Australia where she designs, judges, and facilitates workshops.

Jean was born into gardening and flower arranging as her mother was a great gardener and had a very keen interest in flower arranging. Apart from her passion for floral design, Jean has a beautiful garden, that she relishes spending as much time as possible nurturing. Jean is also innovative with her use of native plant materials.

Jean has been competing and exhibiting at international level for many years, including representing Australia at the WAFA Show in Boston where she and Pene Brunning staged their country’s design.

Since becoming a Judge for the Western Australia Floral Art Society Jean has demonstrated at meetings on many occasions; travelling and competing in many other States in Australia, and taken part in many workshops, usually in a tutor’s role.

Jean competed in the World Flower Show in Dublin, Ireland, travelled to New Zealand to attend the 50th Anniversary of the Floral Art Society of New Zealand, again competing and receiving a Highly Commended award. International travel to Barbados in 2017, for the 12th WAFA Show, resulted in a 1st place with her entry in the class ‘Archipelago’.

Jean shares her passion for floral art with all those who attend her demonstrations and workshops. In New Zealand Jean will be leading workshops for Academy of Floral Design members and the general membership, as well as demonstrating new Trends and Techniques in an evening theatre presentation.
