THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM

On such a short visit, you dont have time to waste,

so set out early for a breakfast to remember. Head

to DCs Capitol Hill neighborhood for a taste of

Washington politicos hard at workyes, even at

8 in the morning. Bistro Bis in the Hotel George in

view of the Capitols big white dome, is a power-

breakfast spot where youre likely to see Hill honchos

meeting over perfect plates of eggs Benedict. Even

better? The restaurant is just a hop, skip, and a jump

from Union Station, so its easy to get to practically

    anywhere in the city.

THE LOST ART OF ARTWe recommend the National Gallery of Art as your

next destination. The Gallerys collection of paintings,

drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, medals, and

decorative arts traces the development of Western

Art from the Middle Ages to the present. If you want

to skip the boring art and go directly to the most

interesting pieces, head straight to the east wing of the

building. Here you can see the focus is on modern and

contemporary art, with a collection including works

by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Andy

Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Alexander Calder.

Do not touch the art. Dirt, moisture, and general nastiness

found on hands can stain or corrode the surfaces of the

artworks. The curators are sticklers about this rule.

MIND YOUR TABLE MANNERSBy now, youll be starved and looking for a place to

rest your feet. Central Michel Richard, one of the areas

most acclaimed new restaurants, is a short walk away

at Tenth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest.

Feast on bistro food gone haute: lobster burgers with

crispy fries, fried chicken with mustard sauce, faux

gras made from chicken livers whipped with butter.

After all that walking, treat yourself to Richards

signature Kit Kat bar dessert. Heaven on a plate.

EXPLORATION IS ENCOURAGEDWith its dinosaur bones, insect zoo, Hope Diamond,

and more, the Natural History Museum is the most

visited museum in Washington DC. The main building

has an overall area of 1.5 million square feet with

325,000 square feet of exhibition and public space.

Talk about a Napoleon complex. Prepare yourself, the

building sounds extremely intimidating and is even

more so once you walk through the doors. Just know

that you could never see everything all in one day.

From the museums map, pick out the top ten things

you have to see and focus on accomplishing those.

If you get lost, dont worry. One of the 1,000+ employees

at the museum will be sure to help you find your way.

    specimens in the museums total

collection, the largest in the world.

You wont be able to miss the 1,800

gallon tank display of coral reef.

    Mammal specimens are presented as

works of modern art within strikingly

    minimal environments. Discover mammals

    evolutionary adaptations to hugely

    diverse happenings across the world.

    The museums 65-million-year-old Triceratops

is named Hatcher in honor of John Bell

Hatcher, who discovered the original fossil

in Wyoming in 1891. It is positioned in an epic

face-o with its rival Tyrannosaurus rex and

placed with related species to reveal the

evolution and diversity of the ceratopsian

dinosaur group. The gigantic 90 foot long

Diplodocus longus is the centerpiece of the

hall and was found in Utah in 1923.

of the White House happens. From the Pennsylvania

ITS A BIRD! ITS A PLANE!As a change of pace and to grab some fresh air, walk

down the Mall heading in the direction of the towering

white marble statue that appears to be projecting out

of the ground. This is the Washington Monument. This

monument was built to commemorate Americas rst

president (youll never guess who it was). It is both the

worlds tallest stone structure and the worlds tallest

obelisk. Construction of the monument began in 1848,

but was halted from 1854 to 1877, and nally completed

in 1884. You can see the dierence in the color of the

stones if you look about a third of the way up.

    The Museums grand entry hall

    showcases a truly awesome collection

    of historic aircraft and spacecraft

    that represent epic achievements

in aviation and space ight. This

    includes Charles Lindberghs own

plane, the Spirit of St. Louis.

You dont enter this gallery; you come

aboard. The shrill whistle of a bosuns call

sounds as you cross onto the quarterdeck

of the mythical aircraft carrier USS

    Smithsonian. Inside is a scaled-down

re-creation of a hangar deck bay. The

    surrounding structures and equipment

are from an actual aircraft carrier.

When President Kennedy committed the nation

in 1961 to landing a man on the Moon, America

had sent only a single astronaut briey into

space. By the time the Apollo program ended,

it had taken the eorts of more than a half-

million people, produced the largest and most

powerful rockets ever built, and sent humans

farther than they had ever gone before. The

gallery also displays some of the Museums

great treasures: space suits worn by Apollo

    astronauts on the Moon.
