Casas - Museu da Taipa

The Association of the eight panoramas of Macao selected the landscape that merges the

classified area constituted by the Taipa Houses-Museum, the Carmo Church, the Civil Affairs

Registry and the two little gardens as one of the eight views of Macao. Especially the Taipa

Houses-Museum, which includes five typical green houses with Macanese architectural

characteristics of Portuguese Matrix, is considered one of the cultural relics and heritages of

the Island.

The Taipa Houses-Museum was built in 1921, which had been the residences for high

superiors and Macanese families. In the 80’s, the Tourist Department of Macao (now the

Macao Government Tourist Office) bought and recovered them. In late 90’s, the government

decided to fully remodel them, recognizing its important architectural value, transforming

them into museums and renaming the houses as “Macanese House”, “House of the Islands”,

“House of the Portugal Regions”, “Exhibition Gallery” and “House for Reception”. The Taipa

Houses-Museum opened to public on 5 December 1999 and is administered by the Civil and

Municipal Affairs Bureau.

In 1847, the Portuguese in Macao extended their influence to Taipa and the Taipa Fortress

was constructed as their military foothold. When they took complete control of Coloane in

1910, the influence of Portuguese administration in Macao over the outlying islands

broadened. Portuguese-style architectures built for official use mushroomed across the

islands to lay grounds for the gradual birth of an authentic culture shared by the posterity of

Page 11: Tour Booklet Macau - deliabw.edu.hk€¦ · 7 group2 list (coach 2) 34 students and teachers class no name sex team t mr. ko yu wa m 2a (18) s6a 1 abais sean carl m 2a s6a 3 akhtar

11

Portuguese who settled in Macao. The premises of today’s Taipa Houses-Museum were the

residential houses built for public servants of Taipa by then.

In the narrow sense, the word “Islands” in “House of the Islands” refers to Taipa and Coloane

and the “house” of those Portuguese living in Macao too. The exhibition, composing of two

display zones: trace into the historical and cultural origins of Macanese and revelation of the

history, religious faith and culture of Portuguese in the islands. In the old days, the periphery

areas of the Taipa Houses-Museum used to be inhabited by Portuguese and the waters of

Nossa Senhora da Esperança Bay (lying in front of the Museum) crossed over with that of

Macao Peninsula. Though such sceneries are gone like shadows, the fascination rooted in the

Sino-Portuguese cultural interchange lives on splendidly and thrives with grace.

Ruins of St. Paul's

The Ruins of St. Paul's (also known as Sam Ba Sing Tzik) stands adjacent to the famous

Mount Fortress and Macau Museum. The front façade and the grand stone stairs are the only

remains of the greatest church.

First constructed in 1580, St. Paul's Church caught fires in 1595 and 1601. However,

reconstruction started in 1602 soon after the church was burnt down. Completed in 1637, the

church became the biggest Catholic Church in East Asia at that time. Unfortunately, a violent

Page 12: Tour Booklet Macau - deliabw.edu.hk€¦ · 7 group2 list (coach 2) 34 students and teachers class no name sex team t mr. ko yu wa m 2a (18) s6a 1 abais sean carl m 2a s6a 3 akhtar

12

typhoon hit Macau in 1835 and the church caught fire for the third time leaving its glory a

history. According to historical materials, St Paul's Church, built with white stones, had a

grand vaulted roof. It had three magnificently decorated halls.

Built with granites, Sam Ba Sing Tzik has a baroque facade rich in ornamentation but with

classic oriental characteristics. From the bottom up, the structure has five tiers. The first tier

is comprised of ten Ionic columns with three entrances. The entrance in the middle has

'MATER DEI' carved into it. The two entrances on each side are decorated with bas-reliefs in

the pattern of 'HIS'. The second tier features ten Corinthian columns with three windows. A

Catholic saint is enshrined in each of four tabernacles between columns. The two tiers as a

whole is said to represent the Society of Jesus and the activities of missionaries.

The remaining three tiers are the most decorated. The statue of Madonna stands in the

middle of the third tier, while the statue of Jesus stands on the fourth. The walls are covered

with bas-reliefs in various patterns like devils, angels, symbols of crucifixion, a Portuguese

sailing ship, etc. The triangular combination of the upper three tiers reflects the Holy Trinity

(the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary. A cross stands at

the coping of the wall.

It is worth mentioning that the stone lions at the sides of the third and fourth tiers are

distinctively Chinese. There are also bas-reliefs in designs of chrysanthemum and cherry, as

well as Chinese inscriptions. The surviving façade has long been acknowledged as a perfect

fusion of western and eastern cultures. The Ruins of St. Paul's has been restored during 1990

and 1995.

Mount Fortress

Built in conjunction with the Jesuits from 1617 to 1626, this was the city’s principal military

defence structure, and was crucial in successfully holding off the attempted Dutch invasion of

Macao in 1622. The fortress was equipped with cannons, military barracks, wells and an

arsenal that held sufficient ammunition and supplies to endure a siege lasting up to two years.

In 1998 the Macao Museum was installed at the site, consisting of two underground levels

and a third one above the fortress’ top platform following the location, volume and design of

the old military barracks that existed at the site before the area was demilitarized in 1965.

The designs of military structures in Macao inspired the southern Chinese authorities to start

building fortresses of a similar kind to defend their extensive coastline.

Mount Fortress is built on top of Mount Hill, which rises 52 metres above sea level. The

fortress covers an area of approximately 8,000 square metres, in the shape of a trapezoid.

The four corners of the fortress protrude to form bulwarks. The northeastern, south-eastern

and south-western walls are built on 3.7-metre-wide granite bases. The walls, 9 metres high

narrowing upwards to 2.7 metres wide at the top, are made of solid rammed earth, further

strengthened by a thick stucco of ground oyster shells. The parapets were crenulated for the

installation of 32 cannons and the two corners of the southeast wall have watchtowers. The

walls facing the Chinese Mainland do not have any battlements, indicating that the fortress

was built only for defence against attacks from the sea.

14

Section of the Old City Walls

This surviving segment of the city’s defence structures, built as early as 1569, is a remnant

of an early Portuguese tradition of constructing defensive walls around their port settlements,

done also in Africa and India. In Macao, this section bears testimony to the incorporation of

local techniques and materials, especially a solid compound named chunambo, an elaborate

mixture of clay, soil, sand, rice straw, crushed rocks and oyster shells compacted in

successive layers. The immediate location of this wall segment is also relevant, taking into

account its proximity to Na Tcha Temple, the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Mount Fortress, as part

of the defence structure of Macao’s “acropolis”.

15

Holy House of Mercy

Established by the first Bishop of Macao in 1569, this institution was modeled after one of the

most prominent and oldest charitable organizations in Portugal, and was responsible for

founding in Macao the first western-style medical clinic and several other social welfare

structures that still function to this day. One of the principal roles of Macao’s Holy House of

Mercy was to provide support for orphans and widows of sailors who died at sea, a role that

is intimately linked to Macao’s profile in the context of regional and international maritime

trading routes.

The Holy House of Mercy features a richly decorative arcaded façade which occupies a

prominent position on Senado Square. It is composed of a mixed variety of columns and

pilasters set between the archways, creating behind them a passageway for pedestrians on

ground level and a balcony on the upper level. The rhythmic placement of these pilasters and

their height variations enliven the façade. With the exception of the granite pedestals on

ground level, the whole building is painted white, emitting simple elegance and a sense of

tranquility. The building is neo-classical in the overall architectural treatment, but also

depicts traces of mannerist influence such as in the use of “imprisoned” columns at ground

level.

Senado Square

The Senado Square is a paved area in the centre of the former Portuguese colony of Macau,

enclosed by the buildings of the Leal Senado, the General Post Office, and St. Dominic’s

Church. The square is paved in the traditional Portuguese pavement. The main road of

Macau's historic centre, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro passes through the square. The square is

part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Macau".

“Leal Senado” Building

Originally built in 1784, this was Macao’s original municipal chamber, a function it maintains

to the present. The name “Leal Senado” (“Loyal Senate”), derives from the title “City of Our

Name of God Macao, There is None More Loyal” which was bestowed by Portuguese King D.

John IV in 1654, after Portugal regained its independence following 60 years of rule by Spain

(1580-1640). During this period, the people of Macao remained loyal to the Portuguese king,

who at the time was exiled in Brazil.

The “Leal Senado” Building is neoclassical in design and has retained all its original master

walls and primary layout, including the courtyard garden in the back. The main façade is 14.5

metres high and 44 metres wide and is divided into three sections by vertical granite

projections. The central section of the main façade juts out slightly from the rest of the

building and is topped by a triangular pediment which, at its highest point, is 17 metres above

the ground. Granite Doric columns, supporting lintels made of the same material, flank the

main entrance.

rench windows in granite casings opening onto balconies with iron railings are the main

decorative features of the façade. Inside the building on the first floor there is a ceremonial

meeting room that opens onto an elaborate carved library styled after the library of Mafra

Convent in Portugal, and a small chapel.

Institute for Tourism Studies

Tourism and Hotel School was initially established in 1982 and reported to the Macao

Government Tourist Office. The school started with a small teaching body of 7 and offered 2

courses, namely, Reception and Housekeeping, at its temporary premises located next to the

Pousada de Mong-Há. In the following years, more courses were added to the list such as

culinary, languages and tour guiding.

In 1993, as a strategy to support tourism development, Macao government decided to create

a higher education institute which would focus only on tourism education and training. A

committee was established to carry out its preparation works, and 2 years later, in 1995, the

Institute for Tourism Studies was born. At the same time, Tourism and Hotel School was

integrated to the Institute.

Today, THS is one of the schools of the Institute providing courses to a varied range of

students who join us with different objectives. Many youngsters attend pre-vocational

courses to learn more about the industry before making their own academic and career

choices; others, join professional programmes to obtain essential knowledge before start

looking for their first job or before setting up their own business; industry staff take

assessments to have their skills certified and recognized internationally; some aggressive

workers come to acquire more skills and high-level knowledge to further develop their career;

some people simply join our courses to learn something different.

With the aim of further developing the local workforce and to push it to a higher level, besides

offering courses to the general public, the school also works with local industry partners and

community associations, customizing courses according to their needs. Programmes are

offered at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels in the following categories:

Hospitality and Catering, Heritage and Tourism, Retail, Business and Management, IT and

Creative Studies, Health, Spa and Beauty, Language and Culture and Personal Development.

University of Macau

The University of Macau is the only public comprehensive university located in Macau, being

the leading tertiary institution of the city which has excellence in teaching, research and

service to the community. Founded in 1981, it is the oldest higher educational institution in

Macau, as well as the largest university in the city in terms of faculty size and curriculum

offered.

It was originally established as the University of East Asia, which was a private university

followed British university structure and most students came from British Hong Kong. As the

preparation of Macau's handover, it was renamed to University of Macau, acquired as a public

university and reformed to Portuguese university structure by the government of Portuguese

Macau.
