Painting the season with fun

Touchmark resident Barbara White is a wonderful example of volunteering at its best.

At 93, Barbara volunteers at The Washington Pavilion every week. The Pavilion is the home of the old Washington High

School, and it now lives an artful life as the home of the arts, entertainment, and science discovery.

For Barbara, the high school turned art building holds many memories. She attended and

graduated from high school at Washington, returning as a teacher of economics and secretarial classes for 23 years. The school was later closed for its age and lack of space.

Both residents and team members took up brushes for a stimulating two-hour session led by an artist from Creative Spirit. For some, the instructor provided step-by-step instructions for painting sunny poppies. For others, she helped them paint “outside the box” to create unique masterpieces, like tulips and clusters of blossoms.

original planning committee and helped promote and support the Pavilion’s progress. Once it opened, she started volunteering in the lobby, offering information as well as giving tours.

“I’ve volunteered for the last 15 years at the Pavilion,” says Barbara, who recently was honored for volunteering more than 3,591 hours. Washington High and the Pavilion have been an important part of her life, and Barbara is very proud of its legacy and mission. “The Pavilion has become a focal point for the downtown area and pulls a variety of children and young and older adults to a place to learn and experience things that they may not have had the opportunity to do elsewhere.”

Connect with community

This month, we’re featuring home 120 with 993 square feet, one bedroom, one bathroom, and a view into our private courtyard.

We invite you to tour Touchmark and take part in an event or activity—and see how being part of a community can enrich your life.

Do you have a computer, iPad, or smart phone?

Research on cognition and memory is finding that people who participate in more mentally stimulating activities have a slower rate of decline in memory (Wilson, et al, 2013, Journal of Neurology). Apps and websites like Fit Brains, Lumosity, Tetris, Sudoku2 all work on your computer, tablet device, or smart phone. Touchmark recently conducted a webinar with team members that covered cutting-edge ideas for activities and cognitive stimulation. We now are working to develop programming throughout Touchmark communities that takes advantage of this technology for enhancing memory.

If you own or intend to purchase a computer, tablet, or smart phone and would like to participate in learning how to use it, please let us know. Also, if you have a favorite website or app that helps build the brain, please send an email to [email protected]. Let’s learn together what can benefit all of us as we exercise our brains and boost memory.

Teegan Musser was thrilled to have found a golden egg, winning a chocolate bunny and junior kick ball. Teegan has been playing kick ball in gym class at school and now is practicing with his older brother at home.

CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS

Bergan Musser (left) and Liz Downey color eggs in advance of the Touchmark Easter Egg Hunt. The group of 25 dunked 45 dozen eggs (more than 540!) into 18 coloring cups—and the group finished in only 35 minutes.

Look for more photos on Facebook and in next month’s newsletter.

Margaret Haugan and granddaughter Katherine color eggs while Carter Hinners helps. The children returned to participate in the annual egg hunt, where 100-plus hunters searched for eggs—and especially the golden eggs. Children, up to age 10, raced to get as many eggs as possible. (The nearly 30 pounds of candy and chocolates added to the event’s sweetness.)

Gail Kristensen uses rubberbands to make a tie-dyed shirt for the birthday night with a theme of ’70s dresses.

From left: Caroline chats with MarJean Dedrick and Margaret Haugan as they enjoy wine at the birthday night. People wore their tie-dyed shirts and colorful outfits to fit the ‘70s theme.
