“COUNCIL’S NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IS TO CREATE JOBS”

SCHOOL CHILDREN HELP PLANT FOR THE FUTURE

The Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has welcomed plans by the new owners

of Wrightbus to grow jobs, increase investment and boost economic growth in the area.

Local schools, community groups and volunteers across the Mid and East Antrim

Borough Council area have come out in force to plant the first trees of the MEA4Trees campaign.MEA4Trees, an exciting new partnership between Council and the Woodland Trust, will see 56,000 native trees planted – that’s one for every household in the borough – over the next five years. The initiative was launched during National Tree Week which is the UK’s biggest annual festival of trees. Council

Following the meeting with Mr Atwal, Ms Donaghy described the company’s commitment to Ballymena as “a ringing endorsement of our area’s world-class advanced manufacturing capabilities and skills base”.She added: “I am extremely excited about what the future holds for Wrightbus, which has a proud reputation as a global leader in its field. Mulled wine and mince pies were the order of the day at the official opening of newly restored Dobbins Inn. Locals and visitors alike dropped into the hotel on High Street recently to find out about the histories and mysteries of the iconic building which has been given a new lease of life following its recent restoration.

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Maureen Morrow, said: “I am delighted to see the restoration works now completed

at The Dobbins Inn in time for the festive season”. She congratulated the support and guidance of Carrickfergus THI Project Board in bringing the project to fruition, acknowledging the significant funding support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council administered through the scheme. She particularly congratulated Kirsty Fallis for her and her team’s commitment and determination over the last two years, in rediscovering and carrying out the painstaking restoration and repair of this important historic listed building. Guests learned that a medieval tower house on the site of Dobbins Inn appears on an old map of Carrickfergus dating back to the 1567, at that time occupied by the Dobbin family, and it was then one

of several tower houses to line the High Street.Owner of The Dobbins Inn, Kirsty Fallis, said: “I was thrilled to see so many people taking the time out of their day to come along and learn more about this fascinating building. “I want everyone to have a better understanding of the history and stories attached to The Dobbins and I hope this official opening has helped fill in some of the gaps.”Councillor Cheryl Johnston, Chair of Carrickfergus THI Board said: “We congratulate Dobbins Inn on the completion of their project. Carrickfergus THI Board really appreciates the commitment and contribution of THI property owners in restoring and regenerating their historic properties in the town centre.“The restoration of Dobbins Inn and the development of further THI schemes is beginning to greatly lift the quality and character of our Conservation Area, and to help us appreciate the particular rarity and importance of some of our buildings.

“The scheme will ultimately benefit us all and help us to fully realise Carrickfergus’s potential as an attractive heritage town and a must-see place to visit.”Archaeologist Paul Logue rounded off the morning by giving a talk and tour on the history of the building and some of its fascinating tales of years gone by and Samuel Wilson, project consultant to the Fallis family, was at hand to talk about the restoration.Lorraine Robinson, Investment Manager for The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “This fantastic project has returned a small piece of medieval Carrickfergus to the present-day, and gives visitors and local people a real sense of what

this place would have been like five centuries ago.“Uncovering and sharing the history of the building has increased our understanding of the past and will undoubtedly help others to learn about and enjoy the heritage of Dobbins Inn and the town.“We were delighted to support this project and the wider Townscape Heritage Initiative and congratulate everyone involved in its success.”The THI is an ambitious regeneration scheme for the town’s Conservation Area, supported by £1.55million in funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and £0.55 million from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

“We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.”

Launched on the 5th of December 2014 Carrickfergus Foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s UK-wide network

of foodbanks. The foodbank is supported by local churches, schools, individuals, supermarkets and businesses along with an amazing team of volunteers who all work together towards stopping food poverty and hunger in our local area.

WHY DO WE NEED A FOODBANK IN CARRICKFERGUS?Today in the UK there are families struggling to put food on the table. For people on low incomes a sudden crisis – illness, benefit delay or an unexpected bill can push their finances over the edge, meaning there is nothing left to pay for groceries. The Foodbank is here to help anyone who is facing hunger because of crisis - for parents skipping meals so their children can eat, for the tenant forced to go hungry just to pay the rent, for the

elderly person making the stark choice between heating or eating

HOW DOES THE FOODBANK WORK?Step 1•Food is DonatedNon-perishable food is donated by schools, churches, businesses and individuals. Food can be donated directly to the foodbank, or if purchased in Tesco or Sainsburys these supermarkets have a permanent donation box in store.Step 2•Food is Sorted and StoredVolunteers sort food to check that it is in date then it is stored ready to be given to people in need when they visit the foodbank.Step 3•Professionals Identify People in NeedThe Foodbank partners with a wide range of care professionals such as health visitors, churches, social workers, MLA’s, community groups, advice services and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher (a list of referral agencies can be found on our foodbank website carrickfergus.foodbank.org.uk).Step 4•Clients Receive Food and

Further SupportFoodbank clients bring their voucher to the foodbank centre where they will receive a warm and friendly welcome from our volunteers. While the food parcel is being prepared volunteers will offer clients a cup of tea or coffee and help to signpost, if needed, to agencies able to solve any longer-term problems.

2018-2019The foodbank in the last year from 1 April 2018 – 31 March 2019 fulfilled 331 voucher referrals providing meals for 508 adults and 384 children. The foodbank also provided Christmas food

CHILDHOOD FRIENDS CHARLES AUCHMUTY AND ISAAC SKILLEN ARE THE EAST BELFAST CO-FOUNDERS OF BOSH BOTTLES UK WITH THE AIM OF REDUCING THE USAGE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE. WE CHATTED TO THEM TO GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE BUSINESS AND THE BENEFITS OF THE BOSH BOTTLES

What was the inspiration for the BOSH project? We have both been interested in business throughout our school lives at Campbell College and Grosvenor Grammar – we have both taken part in the ‘Young Enterprise’ scheme. In April 2019 Isaac and I completed the Madrid Marathon; we could not believe the amount of plastic waste discarded across the streets and public parks, along the marathon route. This kick-started the idea to use these business skills we had developed to reduce the usage of single-use plastics in everyday life. When doing research into the best way to reduce this plastic waste we found that in the UK of the 13 billion plastic bottles bought each year only 7.5 billion are recycled.

What material are they made from and what are the benefits? Our bottles are made of 304 Stainless Steel, considered as the

highest grade stainless steel on the market. The bottles are double insulated and hence our bottles keep cold liquids cold for up to 24 hours and hot liquids hot for up to 12 hours.

How did you go about finding the right people to work with in terms of manufacturing exactly what you wanted? We spent a lot of time contacting a variety of manufacturers at home and abroad, aiming to find a manufacturer who could accommodate our needs as well as taking into consideration our eco-conscious priorities. Our current manufacturers send us our bottles with a carbon-zero foot-print and all package our items without wrapping our bottles in plastics, which many other manufacturers do. Our ultimate aim would be to set up our operation locally and create, design and customise our products here ourselves.

Your bottles are stocked in Refill Quarter which is Belfast’s first zero waste shop. How did you meet the team?Being local Isaac and I were more than excited to hear of Belfast’s first zero waste shop opening. We made sure to contact them informing them of our customised bottles of which they have ordered for their other business Yoga Quarter. Alice and the team at Refill Quarter have been a great help. We love being a part of this eco-conscious community growing in Belfast currently!

ZERO WASTEBottling It

With new years resolutions of new fitness regimes for 2020, these bottles will make an ideal alternative to plastic. Do you have a lot of fitness groups that buy into the concept?Fitness and well-being is a huge influence for Isaac and I, and a market we would love to become a household name in. As previously mentioned our initial inspiration was found in a fitness and setting, and due to our personal interest in fitness we would love to grow our company to have our bottles in gyms and fitness centre’s nationwide. We currently have provided our customised, co-branded bottles for a variety of fitness orientated businesses and clubs including; Active Therapy Clinic (physiotherapy), Glasgow University Athletics’ Club, Kent University Dance Society, the University of London Lacrosse Team and Yoga Quarter. We have only been trading since the start of September and hence we believe there is potential for huge growth within this fitness sector.

What are the range of customers you have had purchasing so far? What we love about Bosh Bottles is that they are suitable for all ages! We have had a huge range of age

of customers from school students all the way up to the elderly. Hydration is essential for all age groups and hence our bottles are suitable for all! We have been astounded by the positive feedback so far, with many commenting on the lighter weight of our bottles making them easier to carry around, in comparison to competitors. A lot of our customers send us pictures with their Bosh Bottle’s as they travel abroad, and many customers have commented that in the warm weather it is amazing that their water in their Bosh bottle stays so cold!

Do you have any plans for the future in terms of new products and innovations? In the New Year we hope to start increasing the variety of designs and colours on our bottles, bringing new ranges alongside our current Matte and Glossy ranges. Additionally based on feedback from our customers, we plan on stocking bottles with a capacity of 1 litre. We are always coming up with new ideas and products, and have a variety of products in the pipeline – keep on an eye on our social media accounts for upcoming products.

Do you offer a personalised design for schools, clubs and businesses? We offer silk screen printing of logos on our bottles! This can be a brilliant way to help advertise, support and grow an individual’s organisation. We recently secured a deal with local East Belfast School Campbell College and we are excited to keep working alongside organisations like this to improve efforts toward promoting green living!

BOSH Bottles are available online at www.boshbottles.ukYou can follow them on Instagram @boshbottles or Facebook @boshbottlesuk. You can also purchase from Refill Quarter, 34 Belmont Road, Belfast.

Neck pain and its related problems can become incapacitating for suerers. Millions of people will experience neck pain at some point in their life. The head is heavy and balanced on a narrow support made up of seven bones called vertebrae. Because the neck is so mobile, it is easily injured.

Neck pain can take many forms and there can be a variety of presentations. It can be either localized pain or it can refer into other areas such as the head creating a headache, numbness or pain in the arms or hands, dizziness, sinus troubles, and TMJ Syndrome. Neck pain can even aect your thinking process!

One of the most common causes of neck pain that chiropractors see is the result of misalignments of the spine. Other causes of neck pain may be postural problems, and traumas such as accidents, knock or falls. Emotional stress can be a trigger for neck pain particularly in combination with other

predisposing factors.

Chiropractic oers a unique approach to a wide range of cervical spine problems. Chiropractic adjustments are a precise and gentle therapy with the aim of returning motion to restricted spinal joints and to improve the overall mechanics of the spine. A new study shows that simple remedies like chiropractic treatments and home exercises relieve sub-acute neck pain better than pharmaceutical drugs – and without all the negative side eects!

The goal of chiropractic care is not only to reduce pain, but it is to treat the cause. Part of the process also involves educating patients on how to prevent future injuries, maintain good posture and live healthily.

Dr Graeme practices in Carrick Chiropractic Clinic. Please feel free to contact the clinic on 02893 366446 for advice or to arrange an appointment.

O nce you (finally) get all those decorations down, you can stand back and take a fresh

perpspective on your home. If you’re feeling VERY inspired, give a wall, floor or piece of furniture a renewed look with paint, rug or upholstery. I’ve been getting inspired already by

going through all the new year magazine editions. Some of the more interesting colour trends are right up our street! Lots of brown colour tones are making a comeback, especially different tones of wood. Adding interesting details like buckles, brass corners, painted edges etc can give a little luxury embellishment.

18 THE ARTS•JAN 20 IN-TOUCH-MAGAZINE

L O C A L C R E A T I V E

Ally Stewart, maker at Three Sixty Woodcraft, crafts a variety of items using a wood lathe and other tools, in his workshop based in Co. Antrim. He specialises in unique handcrafted ballpoint, fountain an rollerball pens, razor handles, bottle stoppers, keyrings and other useful or decorative items made from wood or acrylic. Here’s his story...

My name is Ally Stewart and I’m from Portglenone. I had my very first experience of woodturning while still at school and that interest in working with wood has

always stuck with me. But it wasn’t until about 5 years ago, after recovering from a serious illness, that I felt it would be a good time to take up woodturning as a hobby. So I bought lots of new turning gear and soon Three Sixty Woodcraft was born!

WHAT IS IT YOU MAKE?Pens, pens, pens! That’s mostly what I do now - ballpoints, rollerballs and surprisingly, lots of fountain pens. I love how fountain pens have taken a resurgence, even among younger people. I’m sure journaling and modern calligraphy have helped with this. The materials I use to make my pens include wood, both local and exotic, and also acrylic and resin which allows me to produce pens in almost any colour you could wish for. As well as pens, I also make a selection of gift items such as the unique and very popular razor handles which fit Gillette blades. Also bottle stoppers, bottle openers, keyrings, letter openers and more. Each item is individually created in my workshop to the highest standard I can achieve.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO PIECE OF EQUIPMENT?So apart from stating the obvious by saying my lathe or chisels - the one piece of equipment I would find it difficult to be without is my digital calipers. Because exact measurements are crucial for almost every item I make, these calipers allow me to measure down to a fraction of a millimetre, and therefore are one of the most used tools in my workshop.

WHAT CHALLENGES YOU?What challenges me most is some of the materials I use to make my pens. I like to push the boundaries by using materials which people find interesting - for example, I have made pens using coffee beans set in resin or pine cones set in resin. The challenging part is to turn them without them exploding on the lathe! (It has happened a couple of times! lol) but really worth the effort to achieve a very satisfying and unique end result.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?What inspires me most is seeing the work of other creative people. I follow other makers on social media from all parts of the world and there’s a common thread - the high quality of workmanship that’s out there whether they’re from the US, Scandinavia, the Middle East, or wherever. It really does inspire me to always do my best and to finish my products to the highest possible standard. I

WOOD CRAFTMaster Maker

also love to hear stories of people who have bought or received one of my pens as a gift and who are enjoying using it. I make my pens to be used, not to sit in a drawer, but to keep the art of writing alive! One question I’m asked on a very regular basis is why is it called Three Sixty Woodcraft? The reason is twofold - firstly, and maybe it’s a bit too cryptic! but I wanted something which conveys woodturning as opposed to general woodworking. The lathe spins the wood through 360 degree revolutions so to me Three Sixty made sense! The other reason was for more practical reasons in that Three Sixty Woodcraft hadn’t already been used by someone else on social media, etc and in this day and age it’s essential for any business to have an internet presence.
