GOLF TIP Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

Driving the Ball Farther

We all want to hit the ball farther, but all too often, we try to force it to gain those few extra yards. This “hit it harder” mantra actually has the opposite effect. To hit the ball farther, we need

more speed on the clubhead. Smaller muscle groups in the arms, hands and wrists must remain relaxed and free of tension to generate this speed. Instead of hitting it harder, we should be swinging it faster. Remember, the golf ball is just a highlighted object in the path of the swing – we should be swinging through the ball and not at it.

Meet “Sue”Patrick Turner, VP of Marketing & Communications, The Discovery

Few things in history capture human interest more than dinosaurs. For many, they conjure images of gigantic, fearsome and mysterious beasts who once inhabited the Earth. But now

they’re gone. However, one enormous Tyrannosaurus rex continues to roam the Earth, and her name is Sue.

Sue is the star of A T. rex Named Sue, an exhibition created by Chicago’s Field Museum. The exhibition features a multitude of digital and hands-on exhibits that allow museum visitors to explore Sue’s past and the field of paleontology. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Sue, a 42-foot-long, 12-foot-tall, 3,500 lb. cast of the original skeleton unearthed in South Dakota in 1990.

Sue is the largest and best-preserved T. rex ever discovered. Only four T. rex specimens containing more than 60 percent of their original skeleton have ever been found. Sue is 90 percent complete—only a foot, one arm, and a few ribs and vertebrae are

missing. The specimen was found in the Hell Creek Formation, near Faith, South Dakota, by fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson. In 1997, the Field Museum purchased the 65-million-year-old fossil at auction for $8.4 million, setting the record for the world’s highest price ever paid for a fossil.

A T. rex Named Sue will be on exhibit at The Discovery through January 15, 2018. The exhibition was created by the Field Museum, Chicago, and made possible through the generosity of McDonald’s Corporation.

Admission to The Discovery is $12 for adults, and $10 for children age 1–17 and seniors (65+). Admission on Wednesdays after 4:00 pm is just $5 per person, and the museum is open until 8:00 pm.

To learn more about Sue and the exhibition at The Discovery, visit nvdm.org/sue.

By Auburn Harrison, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Western Nevada

B ring up dropout prevention or graduation rates at any social gathering of educators or parents in Northern Nevada, and you will have people’s full attention. It is no secret that Nevada is number 48 in the nation when it comes to high school

graduation rates with a statewide average of just 72 percent. Here in Washoe County, the local graduation rate increased to 76 percent in 2016, but there is still great room for improvement. Communities In Schools (CIS) of Western Nevada, the local affiliate of the state-wide 501c3 nonprofit dropout prevention organization, works with local students, from kindergartners to high school seniors, to provide them with the tools and the support they need to stay in school and achieve in life.

Communities IN SCHOOLS OF WESTERN NEVADA

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Page 19: Touch-A-Truck & Fall Festival - It's Great to Be Home · your summer stuff and make way for fall! Per Somersett Owners Association, this is one of just two community-wide garage sales

19

CIS, the nation’s most effective dropout prevention and intervention program, started nearly 40 years ago in New York City. In Nevada, the program has seen huge successes in both Las Vegas since the mid 1990’s and Elko since 2007, now serving nearly 60,000 students statewide annually. CIS is still fairly new to Reno, entering into its first contract with Washoe County School District in 2014. Now in its fourth school year in Washoe County, the local affiliate currently has partnerships with five of Washoe County’s most notoriously at-risk Schools, Libby Booth Elementary School, Natchez Elementary School, Vaughn Middle School, Hug High School and Innovations High School. Already, the local CIS affiliate has helped bring the graduation rate among case managed students up to 82% in 2016.

So how do we do it? CIS brings community resources and wraparound support services directly into the most at-risk schools, starting with the youngest, most vulnerable students. While many people assume that dropout prevention starts in high school, the CIS model focuses on early intervention. By giving elementary school students the tools necessary to succeed in school, CIS is eliminating barriers to educational success at an early age—things like hunger, poverty, healthcare needs and the absence of a loving, caring adult in their lives. CIS employs site coordinators to be embedded in the schools full-time, helping to connect students to community resources that will help them succeed. For many students, site coordinators are one of the only stable adult figures in their lives. Studies have shown that the presence of CIS in a school not only keeps students in school and increases graduation rates, but it also results in a higher percentage of case managed students reaching proficiency in math and reading standards. Simply put, CIS works.

CIS can’t do it alone. Our partnerships with dozens of local nonprofit organizations, businesses, community volunteers, and corporate supporters are crucial to our success with local students. Without the support of Washoe County School District, local foundations, corporate sponsors and individual donors, CIS would not have the resources to serve our students. Those who support CIS understand that dropout prevention is a community problem and that everyone should be invested. The difference between a student with a high school diploma and a student who drops out is vast. CIS helps change the course of life for nearly 3,000 Northern Nevada students each year. As our agency leaders say, “It’s relationships, not programs, that change children.” CIS is dedicated to surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Community members wishing to support CIS can help by volunteering their time as mentors or tutors, collecting and donating school supplies and uniforms, and by donating funds to be used toward interventions and programming. Hikers can travel the footsteps of early emigrant’s journey across the Sierra Nevada mountains October 14 & 15 by participating in the 25th Annual Donner Party Hike.

Participants can choose from six different hikes on Saturday, and a walking tour on Sunday. All hikes offer interesting insight into emigrant history from local area guides, along with invigorating recreation and beautiful scenery.

Saturday’s hikes begin and end at Sugar Bowl Ski area Mt. Judah lodge located on Highway 40 on Donner Summit. Guides will lead groups of approximately 15-20 people to interpretive spots giving detailed historical information focused on emigrant and area history. In the afternoon, hikers will enjoy a hamburger lunch, and a presentation by Mark Twain portrayed by McAvoy Layne.

There are six hike options of varying length offered on Saturday. Explore the Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road and 1913 Corridor Lincoln Highway with views of petroglyphs, old roadside

billboards and the China Wall. Hike up Roller Pass and Mt. Judah to see where wagon trains were winched up over the granite. Discover pristine High Sierra Lakes, summit meadows or explore Coldstream Canyon. Back this year is the return of the Railroad Snowsheds hike. Each hike offers a unique and memorable experience.

Sunday starts with a more relaxed walking tour departing from the Donner Camp Picnic Area, located on 2.5 miles north of Truckee on Highway 89. Following the walking tour where guides will detail the Donner Party’s encampment, participants will drive to Donner Memorial State Park to hear more about the Donner Party, the Pioneer Monument, visit the Murphy’s Cabin Site, and enjoy entrance to the all new visitor center offering a historical movie about the Donner Party.

Space is limited for all events and reservations are required. Early registration for the Saturday hikes is $75 ($85 after October 3, 2017 per hiker) and includes a guided hike, commemorative ballcap, hamburger lunch and afternoon presentation. Sunday’s walking tour is part of a two day package and includes the guided walk and entrance to the visitor center. 2-day hike package is $100 ($110 after October 3, 2017). Complete hike descriptions and registration forms can be found at www.donnerpartyhike.com

The event is produced by Just Imagine Marketing and Design in collaboration with Donner Summit Historical Society. Sponsors of this event include: Best Western Truckee Tahoe, Donner Lake Village Resort, Hampton Inn and Suites Tahoe-Truckee, Inn at Truckee, Truckee Chamber of Commerce, Truckee Donner Lodge, Tahoe Trail Bar, and Wild Cherries Coffeehouse.

Our Philosophy of Care:

To care for each individual with dignity and respect and join you in honoring them.

Earlier this year my mother became a resident of Stone Valley. Unfortunately, she passed away too soon; however, by the time

she did, we had all become part of the Stone Valley “family.” While my mother was there,we were reassured and so thankful for the level of care and love she received every day from the entire team.
