"Whirlow Grange a History of theDiocesan Conference Centre". It doesactually have a flavour of Totley about itfor the original owner of Whirlow Grange -long before it was a Conference Centre -had an interest in Totley Vale (now TotleyGrove) and died there in 1869. The hookcosts £2.50 and of course is primarilyabout the last 35 years or so in which the

,As I write this the long dry summer/autumn18eems to be coming to an end as the first

sustained wet weather since April 'hasreally damped the dust. It must beadmitted that many cereal and Oilseed Rapecrops desperately needed water as theyeither failed to germinate or struggled tokeep alive in the dry conditions.

We normally associate the start of Ihaymaking or cereal harvest: as the evenz s ..most likely to cause a period of '!vetweather. but this year cur start of potatoharvesting has proYed to be the" mosteffectual rain-rne_king ;rituaL We are nowapprox. half way through with yields of 12T'cmnes per acre expected - well down onlast year. This is fairly generalthroughout the country with totalproduction likely to be 5% ~ 6 millionTonnes, \ million less than last yearwhich is already reflected in much highe;prices, which will continue to rise as weenter the new year.

The "Daventry Nuns" have highlightedanother problem for producer and consumeralike as the new Salmonella testing schemebegins to have an effect. Because it is sostructured as to require smaller producersto test regularly a much higher proportionof their flock than those who have 10,000p Ius hens in one house. the mast I ike lyoutcome is that the big Ifbattery"producers will expand as the smaller unitis made uneconomic due to the cost oftesting and the "aggro" the procedurecauses. One of my friends in the animalfeed trade thinks egg pr-ices will rise to£2 per dozen in the New Year because ofthis, but 1 think he is exaggeratingsomewhat! The annoying part of the wholesaga is that millions of untested eggs, some known to be infected. are still belna-.•. .,' b

l,mported into this country which makes a,mOCkery of the scheme.

IOnly a few of last ye ar s lambs now remainlas the Tups are put in with the ewes to

produce next years crop, d.ue at the end of. March.

Ve have ploughed out the gooseberry bushesplanted in poor conditions two years agobecause of their unfruitfulness. They willbe replaced shortly with the varietyCareless, a mid,.,season. high yieldingvariety. We also have some Glen Pr o.s eriraspberries to plant - this late varietywill extend OUr picking season.

••GARDENINGWe've had quite a good summer in thegarden. the onions were excellent.! hadone which weighed in at over 3 Lbs - mybest yet ! Celery is doing fine J dahliaslooking really splendid and a nice crop ofbeans. but the high spot this year is thefact that the French Walnut tree given tome as a small 4 yr old sapling by a goodfriend 7 yrs ago has produced nuts far thefirst time two of them! 1 've plantedthem in the hope that more will develop.Well, 1 can live in hope like mostgardeners! I hope you have enjoyed yourgarden as much as we have. Now is the timefor ground work for next year.

Lawns~ Scarifying and spiking can becarried out on established lawns ifweather permits"

* If you are going to be sowing seed nextspring, prepare the site now. Dig andlevel the ground, removing stones andweeds.

* Rake leaves off the lawn and compostthem.

.••If you've made your final cut. makesure your mower is really clean beforeyou put it away. This is also a goodtime to have it overhauled.

Flovers~ Fallen leaves can be verydamaging to plants still growing. Theyharbour slugs and induce rotting soremove as many as you can.

* The first keen frost will be with ussoon. Protect tender perennials withstraw or bracken. Hedgehogs will stillbe about so resist the temptation toput down slug pellets until it is cold

* Check stored dahlia tubers. Cut offrotten portions and dust with fungicideif necessary.

* Re-firm autumn planted wallflowers andpansies if frost has loosened them.

Greenhousem Inspect treated bulbs such ashyacinth and crOCllS. Check that rootshave been produced and shoots havestarted to form. Bring them into lightcool greenhouse for growing on.

* Get into the habit of checkinggreenhouse temperatures. Install athermometer - best is the min-max type.

* Ventilate the greenhouse freely duringwarm sunny spells - remember to closethem at night.

* Check regularly for pests and diseasesand use a gr.eenhouse fumigant ifnecessary.

* Continue feeding plants that will beflowering during the winter.

T(Psl* Water sparingly and avoid splashing

leaves. Don't let seedlings dry outthough.

Fruit. Bush fruit which was summer prunedcan be finished now, this includesblack and red currants and formallytrained apples and pears.

* Protect your fruit bushes and treesfrom pecking by birds which oftenstarts this month.

* Dig up rhubarb for forcing and leave aDsoil surface to be frosted.

Vegetables. Mulch asparagus with a 2 in (5cm) layer of well rotted manure orcompost.

* Check vegetables in store. Remove anyshowing signs of rotting.

* Earth up leeks if not done last month.* Remove yellowing leaves from brassicas

and protect cauliflowers by bendingleaves over the developing heads.

* Pot up parsley and mint for growing oneither on the windowsill or greenhouse.

'* Clear away all the debris to preventpests breeding in it and start winterdigging. Plan out where you areplanting produce for the Totley Show.

Trees and Shrubs are at risk in coldweather. A good deep mulch over theroot area will be most beneficialm

* Move deciduous trees and shrubs on dayswhen soil is moist but not too wet andwhen there is no danger of frost. Tryto keep as much soil round the roots aspossible. Firm and stake well.

* Move tubs of· bay, hydrangeas~ fuchsiasand other less hardy shrubs into alight frost free place.

* Rake up a.nd burn fallen leaves fromrose-beds ~ This will destroy black spotspores.

Houseplants. Try to avoid fluctuatingtemperatures. These can be maredamaging than too hot Or too c.old. Keepplants out of draughts.

* Foliage plants should be keptmoist. Let the top of compostslightly in between watering.plants need to be kept moist.

* Spray plants every few days with tepidwater except hairy leaved plants andthose in flower.

"* Keep a look-out for pests and spraywith house-plant insecticide. Don't usegarden chemicals for house plants.

That lot should keep you out of mischief!Cheerio for now.

A .,'" ,••••••••PROBLEM"-~."T ""' "" _

The Methodist Church in Totley Rise has aserious problem. We cannot accommodate thecongregation who wish to worship at thechurch each Sunday morning. About 12months ago the Church Members began tothink seriously about .•rays of overcomingthe problem. Having two services eachSunday morning was d i s'coun t ed on thegrounds that our w!ay of worship involvesthe whole Church family meeting togetherrather than creating two separatecongregations.Theoverwhelming demand'froTIlthe Church members was that we shouldextend our premises. TRANSPORT 17Transport 17 is celebrating its fifthbirthday with the purchase of a thirdminibus and further expansion of theservice to elderly and housebound people.

Transport 17 was started by a small groupof volunteers who purchased the firstminibus in 1984. By 1937 the demands forits use necessitated the purchase of asecond vehicle. The increase in. theservice has led to the es t.abLi.shment of apermanent office and the employment ofMichael Finn as a full-time co-ordinatorand driver.

Apart from Michael, Transport 17 is stillrun by volunteers and there is always ashortage of drivers and escorts for thebuses. Although some drivers are obtaine.dfrom the Employment Training agenciesthese are not sufficient for all thejourneys which are 1:equired. The arrivalof the third minibus ,d" 11 increase theneed for more driver,!L

Transport 17 are planning t.o expand theiroper-at.Lng area as part of a co-ordinatedplan to extend the minibus scheme to thewhole of Sheffield. Details are not yetfinalised but when they are. houseboundpeople in adjacent areas will be able toshare the freedom which is now enjoyed byso many people in Totley and Dare.

In the meantime Transport 17 needs thecontinued support which it has had fromthe whole community in the past fiveyears. If you can help with manning theminibuses. raising funds or organisingoutings or visits please call Michael on363332.
