I loved the well deserved tributes to Nick Bollettieri in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on July 10-11. Nordis and I met Nick in 1963 in the early days of our tennis careers in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Many tennis pros in the states doubted

his ability as a player and instructor, but I do not think Nick gave a damn what they thought and he eventually had the last laugh. With all his great achievements, he has had a long and very successful career.

I can relate to Nick’s struggles, as I have spent a lifetime promoting the sport we love. When he began the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in 1981, I had already sold my Westhampton Racquet Club and Resort in Long Island, New York in 1980, which I had opened in 1962. We moved to Sarasota that same year, and like Nick, we never planned to leave this “paradise.” Like Nick, I will also continue promoting the sport we love, but only locally with my Totally Tennis magazine and Exhibition Series.

In June of 2010, I was so upset with the International Tennis Hall of Fame for not recognizing Nick’s great contributions to tennis and his charitable contributions, it motivated me to begin the Gulf Coast Tennis Hall of Fame, and Nick was our first inductee. In any case, they finally gave him the credit he deserved on July 12, 2014. CONGRATULATIONS, NICK!

The prevalence of rotator cuff injuries to tennis players is astounding. If you’ve been playing tennis for more than a few years, I can almost guarantee that you or someone

you play with has had a strain or a tear to a muscle of the rotator cuff. These injuries are not fun. At best, it requires complete rest from all play, and at worst it may require surgery.

If you’ve ever been in that position, then you know how frustrating an injury like this can be. It may come as a surprise to you to learn that the most important preventative step you need to take to avoid a rotator cuff injury (aside from getting adequate rest time in between matches and doing the proper warm-ups), is to strengthen the bigger muscles of the shoulder to take stress off the rotator cuff muscles.

Over the next few months, I will be delivering articles and videos that will show you how to strengthen these bigger muscles so you can either prevent a rotator cuff injury, or recover faster from a current one. This month I begin with a muscle that needs to be strong to prevent the most common rotator cuff injury people experience—impingement of the supraspinatus. I have

When Mary Pierce walked into the United Tennis Academy at El Con, you’d think it was a party thrown in her honor. Even though she was coming there to meet me for an

interview, half the staff already knew her. She greeted her old friends in two different languages before sitting down for a wide-ranging discussion about her challenging teenage years, her personal transformation in her 20s, and enjoying retirement in Bradenton.

Fast Facts:Born: Montreal (1975)Highest Ranking: #3 (1995)Grand Slams: Australian (‘95), French (‘00)Prize Money: Nearly $10 million

When did you first get near a racquet?Oh, that’s such a cool question. I was ten years old and

I went to a club (Seminole Lake Racquet Club between St. Petersburg and Clearwater) with a friend of mine, Rachel, who played good junior tennis in Florida. While I was watching, a lady saw me in the club and asked if I wanted to play, and I said, “yes.” So they told me to go to the pro shop and get a racquet. The woman there asked me what racquet I usually play with and I said I’ve never played. So she gave me a racquet and they sent me to a court full of little kids being hand-tossed the ball. After one shot, the coach on that (beginners’) court said, “Who told you to come here?” And I was sent to a higher court. After five minutes (on the intermediate court), the coach there said, “Who told you to come here?” And I was sent to the next court up again. And when I finished, I went to find my friend and the head pro said, “Hi, I’m Kevin (Quay), I’ve never seen you in my club before. What’s your name, how old are you and how long have you been playing?” I said, “I’m Mary, I’m Rachel’s friend, I’m ten years old, and I’ve been playing for like 45 minutes.” And he said, “No no, how many years?” And I said, “No, it’s my first day.” (Laughs.) He said, “All right, I want you to come back tomorrow with your parents.”

So I went off to find my friend, I’m like, “Uh oh, I think I’m in trouble, I did something wrong, I have to come back tomorrow with my parents.” And that was it, my parents came back the next day and spoke to the coach, and I began to take lessons three times a week after school, and it went from there. I think Kevin is teaching on Treasure Island now (Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club).

Did you realize how easy tennis came to you?No, at the time I didn’t. But now when I think about it, like,

yeah, it’s crazy. The first time I was playing I was serving and playing points!

Did you love tennis right away? I wanted to be a pediatrician, so for me, this was just

something that I did, you know, something your parents tell you to do and you just do it. And they said, “Now you’re going to play tournaments,” and I played tournaments. It wasn’t until I was 18 that it really became my decision, and like, ‘This is what I want to do.’

You burst on the scene at 14, four years after you first picked up a racquet, and then your father wound up making headlines for his behavior. What was that like?

I had a very tough childhood, and those four years of playing were really hard. I don’t regret it and it’s made me who I am today and where I am today. But, when I turned 18, I said, “I’m out of here,” and I took time off, and I wanted to see what I wanted to do with my life. And three months later I was doing really nothing, and so I said, “Tennis is what I feel like I should continue doing.”

So that’s when you found your purpose.

No, that was when I was 25 (1999). That’s when I became a Born Again Christian. Linda Wild, who used to play on the tour from Chicago became friends with me (Note: Linda rose to #23 in ‘96). It was funny, by 25 I had done amazing things in tennis and reached nearly the top, but I was still really empty, and I felt like something was missing in my life, and I could never figure out what it was. I tried to fill it with so many things, but nothing did. I knew Linda had something special about her, and when she said she had a personal relationship with Jesus, I knew that’s what I was missing in my life!

That totally changed me. I went to the French Open three

What’s your relationship like with your father, and where is your family?

Oh, it’s great. He and my mother also live in Bradenton. They got divorced when I was 18. I have a brother, David, who’s 15 months younger, who also lives in Bradenton.

Do you have kids of your own?

Don’t. Never married, no kids.

Is it hard for you to date? I don’t believe in dating. Ever since I was Born Again, I

believe God has a plan for my life, and that if His plan for me is to be married, then I will know if and whenever I do meet him, that I’ll know he’s my husband.

Do you think the pro game has changed a lot? I don’t really think so. I feel if I were ten years younger, I’d

be right up at the top today. I think the only thing that’s changed is that tennis has just become a more amazing business. There’s a lot more prize money, technology—racquet strings are better, Hawkeye’s great on court, but the game itself, and how it’s being played, I mean the girls are getting fitter and stronger and maybe hitting a littler harder and faster, but in general I think it’s the same style.

Do you follow the pro game a lot these days?Oh, yes, I love it. When I hurt my knee (in 2006), I watched

all the scores on-line every single day for quite a long time. And now that I’m coaching, I need to be up-to-date on who’s playing.

You’re coaching?

I have coached since 2010, just for fun, some friends of mine’s kids. They’re from Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar (1,200 miles east of Africa).

How often do you play now?I used to play every once in awhile. Maybe once a week. But

I had a back injury a couple months ago, so I’m rehabbing my back, (as well as) my shoulder, and my knee, and getting myself fit so I can hit as much as I want and whenever I want.

How long have you lived in Bradenton?I came when I was 13 (to IMG) and stayed for a little while,

and I came back when I was 18. And so pretty much since I was 18 years old, I’ve been here, and this has always been my base when I return to America. I love Sarasota, it’s beautiful.

months after that, and the journalists all asked me if I had done some sports mental work, because they said, “You’re so much more peaceful, you don’t get mad on the court, important points you’re calm, what have you done?” And I said, “Well, the Lord’s in control, I’m just going out to have fun and it’s all in His hands.” It just took all the pressure off. It was so evident, even the look on my face had changed. So many things in my life changed. I went to the Australian Open one year and the journalists said, “You look so great, and so happy, you’re in love!” And I said, “Actually I am.” And they thought they had a scoop, and I said, “Jesus,” and they (waving her hand) said, “Ohhhh. Boring.”

Who were your best friends on the tour? Iva Majoli, Jennifer Capriati, Anke Huber. The four of us stuck

together, played doubles together, went to dinners together, go to amusement parks together. I mean, we’re together (on the tour) more than we are with our own families.

You’ve had such an arc in your life and in your career. Strong father figure, at first playing reluctantly, ending strong. Reminds me a bit of Andre Agassi.

Yeah, it’s true. I really admire Andre and I think he does a lot of things that I’d like to do.

What’s your relationship like with Nick Bollettieri?I love Nick. He was there at a time in my life that was really

tough, and he helped me a lot. I’m glad he’s finally in the Hall of Fame. He deserves it!

What was it like being a celebrity since you were 14?Growing up in the spotlight was really tough, because you’re

young and you’re not used to people looking at you and watching everything you do, making comments about everything. I went through a period where it was really hard. As I grew and changed, my outlook toward people changed, and then I loved the interaction with people.

Are you recognized much here in Bradenton? It depends where I go and how I’m dressed. People

recognize me wherever I go, but France — a lot more than America.

Your father is American, your mother is French and you were born in Montreal. You have three citizenships. Good thing or bad thing?

Well, I guess it makes it easier to travel (laugh!). It’s tough in one sense —whereas, some people are born and raised in one place. They really have their roots, and they’re faithful, loyal citizens to one country, where I don’t have that. I’m proud to be all three and be supported in each place.

What do you feel you are in your heart? All of them. Kind of a citizen of the world, I guess (laughs!).

I only lived in one house for three years. That was the longest of my whole life. It’s tough when you’re always going and going.

If it were up to the Sarasota/Bradenton community, Nick Bollettieri would have been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame decades ago. We all know about Nick and his IMG legacy. He is responsible for almost single-

Established in 1954, the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum is a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the history of tennis, inspiring and encouraging junior tennis

development, providing a landmark for tennis enthusiasts world-wide, and enshrining tennis heroes and heroines with the highest honor in the sport of tennis-induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is located in Newport, Rhode Is-land, USA, on a six-acre property that features an extensive mu-seum chronicling the history of the sport and honoring the 235 Hall of Famers from 20 countries; 13 grass tennis courts and an indoor tennis facility that are open to the public and to a club membership; a rare Court Tennis facility; and an historic 297-seat theatre. Annually in July, the venue hosts the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships for the Van Alen Cup, an ATP World Tour event. The facility was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Tennis in NewportThe history of tennis in Newport is synonymous with tennis in

America. Since 1881, when American tournament tennis began on the grass courts of the Newport Casino, the world’s best players have

competed in Newport. Newport has witnessed each new generation of tennis stars from 1881 to the present.

In 1915, the U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships moved from Newport to the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York. However, the world’s foremost players continued to play in Newport at the Newport Casino Invitational. From 1915 to 1967, the Casino Invitational hosted the world’s premier players.

The Professional Men’s Singles and Doubles lasted from 1965 to 1970. In 1971, professional women’s tennis finally came to Newport with The Professional Women’s Singles and The Professional Women Doubles from 1971-74. The Virginia Slims of Newport returned from 1983-1986. The National Amateur Grass Court returned from 1974 to 1976.

Currently, the ITHF has broken ground on a multi-faceted $15.7 million capital campaign and improvement project. The project will expand the Hall of Fame’s campus by one acre, and will result in a world-class tennis facility and significant enhance-ments to a prominent Newport street, Memorial Boulevard.

handedly turning the game of tennis around. The coach with the Midas touch and permanent golden tan has had a hand in shap-ing 13 grand slam champions, including Monica Seles, Andre Agassi, Jimmy Arias, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Mary Pierce, Maria Sharapova, and Jelena Jankovic.

Jim Courier said, “Nick gave us the balls and rackets and we went on the back courts and became warriors. So you had good players playing against each other on a daily basis.”

In addition to his endless tennis contributions, Bollettieri has contributed to various charitable organizations, including Dick Vitale’s V Foundation for cancer research. He has adopted two sons from poverty-stricken areas of Africa.

On the day after his 80th birthday, Nick jumped out of an airplane with the Army Black Knights of West Point. But that thrill can’t even come close to competing with his recent International Hall of Fame induction. We offer him his long-deserved congrat-ulations and we can almost hear his heart soaring.

In the near future, Jimmy Bollettieri will be offering to the public limited edition prints of Nick and his legendary players from past to present, including some rare photos of Andre Agassi in his early years. Contact [email protected].

As many of you know, I was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on July 11 along with Lindsey Davenport, John Barrett, Jane Brown, and Chantal Vandierendonck.

Receiving this award was a great honor and it had a big impact on me. I would like to use this month’s article to share my thoughts about my induction into the International Hall of Fame, because I never thought this would happen.

I started teaching tennis nearly 60 years ago on two run down courts in Miami. I was a pretty good athlete and played many sports growing up, but I didn’t play tennis until I was in college. I picked the game up quickly and made my college tennis team as a junior and senior. After college I enrolled in law school, but quickly realized I did not want to spend my life in an office. I loved being outside and being in the sun. Because I needed to provide for my new family, I figured I would try teaching tennis. I didn’t know much about teaching the game, but I was willing to work hard to learn. I also realized that I had an ability to relate to players, motivate them, and bring out their best. I dreamed about one day becoming one of the best coaches in the world.

Because of my brashness and bravado, however, I had a tendency to rub the tennis establishment the wrong way. In fact, for most of my career I was considered a little crazy and a bit of a rebel. I guess to do some of the things in tennis that I’ve done, you have to be a little crazy. Because of the love and encouragement of my parents, I had the courage to follow my dreams and not be afraid of failure. My father told me what’s important is not that you fall down, it’s how you get up that counts. He said if you’re afraid to fail, you’re also afraid to be successful. With that encouragement I had the courage to do some crazy things like creating the first boarding tennis academy, believing that I could help players become top professionals, and working with 10 players who became number one in the world.

Many people have asked for my thoughts on the Hall of Fame honor and a copy of my speech. Here are some of the comments I made that day:

Wow, now I know exactly how it feels for those to reach the top of Mount Everest!! And, may I say the view from up here is amazing!

I’d like to start off by saying congratulations to my fellow members of the Class of 2014. It’s an honor and privilege to be in the same company as you . . . Lindsey, John, Jane, and Chantal.

It’s not often that I am humbled – as those of you who know me will tell you – but, being honored alongside the four of you today is something I will cherish for a lifetime.

I’d also like to thank all of you who voted for me…(for a while I thought I was going to be the Susan Lucci of the tennis world!)…so, your vote means the world to me, it really does.

Now, I didn’t reach the top of this mountain by myself. In fact, we Italians don’t like to do anything by ourselves…. So, do me a favor, please….. If I, Nick Bollettieri, have ever yelled at you – either on or off court – please stand up now.

Wow…. We made it! Can you believe it? It only took 60 years…. But we made it! It is truly because of you that I am standing right here today. I wish I could name and thank each

one of you individually, but we’d be here long after dark. There is really no way I could ever thank you enough for

making my journey such a great one. Just know that I love you…and I always yell at those I love the most…so you can expect to hear this old raspy voice hollering for many more years!

Okay…..now you can sit down….It sure would have been a lot easier and faster if we had

taken the well-worn path up the mountain…But, when you were brave enough to follow me when I forged my own path which others found to be unorthodox and downright crazy….but, we made it and we sure had a whole lot of fun getting here! Thanks again to all of you!

I may not have been too good of a student, but I’ve always been pretty good with numbers…..in fact, I guess you could say I’m “A Man of Numbers”….

Let’s see, there’s . . . 10 Numbers Ones 9 Lives 8 Wives 7 Amazing Children 6 Having a 6th Sense 5 o’clock….The time my first student meets me on court 4 Beautiful Grandchildren 3 Years of Service to our Country 2 Great Parents 1 Passion 0 The number of books I have read in my lifetime!

Whew…..try saying THAT three times fast! Add in the rest of my family; and friends, coaches, and players who are like family; and the thousands of kids I have had the privilege of working with over the years, and you’ve got me in a nutshell….

The fuel that has sustained me to the summit is, without a doubt, my passion to help others become champions of life. Nothing makes me more happy than when I run into a past student or receive a kind note telling me of how I changed their lives…that they are better parents, lawyers, doctors, CEO’s PEOPLE because of ….

Their passion to try to reach their full potential…To not quit when the going gets tough….To know that when I was yelling at them, what I was really

saying was, “I believe in you and I want you to believe in yourself, because you can do it…you can do anything you are willing to work for.” That’s how we made it up this mountain…by pushing each other, making huge sacrifices and being there for each other.

I will never be remembered for my business sense, or for my luck with marriages, or for putting my family first…What I hope I will be remembered for is . . . DARING TO FOLLOW MY PASSION AND HOPEFULLY IGNITING THAT SAME SPARK OF PASSION IN OTHERS! Thank you again for this tremendous honor.

Are You a String Breaker?

Most players switch to a stiffer or new technology string after breaking their strings. By choosing this option, they may notice a difference in string char-acteristics, like: 1. Power; 2. Feel and touch; 3. Elbow, wrist, shoulder issues.

If you like the current string you’re using, as far as comfort, power, overall play-ability, but you break them much too quickly, here’s a possible solution. String sav-ers, commonly referred to as string-a-lings—are small pieces of material, plastic or otherwise, which are slipped in between the strings in high-wear areas. Ultimately, string savers prevent cross and main strings from rubbing against one another, increasing their durability. With some of the new technology in open or wider string beds, it is common to break a string much quicker, especially when hitting with any amount of underspin or topspin.

Example: We have a current member who just bought a new racket with an open string bed, and he broke a string in less than 5 sets. He came to me and wanted to possibly switch to a harsher (stiffer and more durable) string. I then asked him if he has or ever had wrist, elbow, or shoulder problems. He said “no,” so I told him, before we went to a new string, since he likes the type of string he is using, an alternative string saver might solve the problem. He agreed to experiment with the string savers, and guess what? He hasn’t broken a string in three months and counting. Success!

Nerves play a crucial element in performing well. Here are six great tips on how to use them to your advantage!

D o you get nervous before a match or before competing?

Then good, because even the very best athletes in

the world get nervous too!

Many times I’ve been in the gym or locker room and witnessed play-ers like Novak, Rafa, and Roger

warming up before a match, and let me tell you, they aren’t as relaxed as you might think. Actually, in Rafa’s book, he mentions that he has at least four bathroom stops before go-ing onto the court for a match!

In fact, I’ve worked with two world number one athletes in both tennis and squash, and witnessed

nerves first hand. I often get asked, “Allistair, how do I get rid of nerves?”

My answer is, “Why do you want to get rid of something so vital to performing well?”

The bottom line is that nerves are the fuel for performing well. Let me explain why:

First thing you need to do is change your mindset about them and start seeing them in a positive light.

Many people see nerves as a ‘negative’ thing, or some-thing that can hurt their performance, the reason being that they have been taught to think that way. However, to most world-class athletes, it’s viewed as a ‘ready to go’ adrenaline rush that’s a necessity to their performance. What these elite athletes also do incredibly well is keep a confident and calm composure on the outside. They never look nervous and they hide it well.

Six Ways to Handle Nerves1. See them as a sign from your body that you’re ready to

compete. It’s the positive ‘ready to go’ adrenaline. 2. Even the very best athletes in the world get them be-

fore a match. Nerves are telling you that something great is going to happen out there today!

3. Have a routine before a match that helps you ‘channel

those nerves’ — some athletes use music as a fuel (Rafa, Azarenka, Kuznetsova).

4. Your opponent is probably even more nervous than you, except the difference is that you know how to handle them better (unless they read this article as well!).

5. If you didn’t get nervous, then what you were doing wouldn’t mean that much or be that special to you.

6. When competing, at the start of a match, expect them. Give yourself the freedom to make some mistakes at the be-ginning. When you give yourself this passport, you will be ‘free to play.’

So my message is this: embrace nerves, change the way you see them, and remember that even the champions get them. Emulate these champions by looking confident next time you walk out onto the court and know that you are ready to compete!

Remember, nerves are the fuel to perform!

On Sunday, July 20th, the first of three Totally Tennis Exhibition Series summer matches were held at the new Sarasota Racquet Club. MC Ray Collins introduced

the opening one-set match between two very talented youths, Gabriel Jarrett (nine-years-old) and Andrew Salu (eight-years-old), with Andrew winning a tough battle. This was followed by Gabriel singing, We are the Champions and Anya Dennison singing The National Anthem. These youngsters received a well-deserved standing ovation. Promoter Bob Luxembourg said the two will perform a duet at next month’s exhibition.

The final match of the day was the Battle of the Sexes, won by Nate Griffin, Tennis Director at River Strand Country Club, over Brittany Lashway, WTA tour player, but only after a grueling two sets of long rallies and offensive shot making by both players, 6-3, 7-6.

Yes, it is true! One day a simple injection of stem cells with a carrier substance may be able to completely undo the debilitating disease of arthritis or injuries sustained in sports activities.

Dr. William Bennett has been utilizing stem cells to treat various tendon, cartilage, ligament, arthritic injuries and non-unions of bone for years with clinical success that is exemplified by this basic science research.

All humans have adult stem cells. In fact, tissue in the human body has some type of stem cell, even heart and brain tissue, which can be

readily available in our bodies. Bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons, ligaments and vertebral discs can be regenerated in certain cases by extracting stem cells from a patient’s own bone marrow. Stem cell/gene therapy allows for better bonding capabilities, especially in bone fractures, by serving as ‘smart’ vehicles that actively participate in the bone formation process. By introducing stem cells at the site of injury, doctors can give the body a boost by delivering the patient’s own natural regenerative materials directly to the afflicted joint.

Call Dr. William Bennett to find out if stem cell therapy is the right treatment for you to get you back into your game!

Testimonials“Today is the 19th day following application of bone marrow stem cells into hip area and I feel big improvement. I do not feel any pain at tendon area. I don’t know how these magic cells works, but they works. Thank you, Dr. Bennett.”

“I injured my knee in a bicycle accident at the age of 16 (torn meniscus and cartilage). After numerous surgeries with little to no success, I found Dr. Bennett. After a surgery, PRP, and later, stem cell therapy, my knee is significantly improved! After years of being unable to run, I now can!”

“Dr. Bennett repaired my miniscus, two Achilles tendons, and repaired a rotator cuff. My golf game is better then ever. Thanks so much, Dr. Bennett, for all your help.”

Jeff Aarts

Iam sad to report Cedars Tennis Director and USPTA Tennis Pro-fessional Jeffrey Aarts passed away on August 13th. Jeffrey was a dedicated father and family man and we are going to miss him.

Jeffrey, a USPTA 1 Professional for more than 30 years, was a very busy man; he directed Cedars Tennis Club as well as Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, Conn. He was a member of Bradenton Country Club and is survived by his wife Karen Aarts and two sons, Peter and Michael.

Never shy of doing hard work, he was instrumental in building numerous tennis programs from the ground up. He was most proud that his two sons continued his trend, by applying the same strong work ethic and dedication to their sports and lives.

He competed in National Tennis Championships, including the previous National 50s in Sarasota. In 1991 he was a finalist in the USTA Men’s 35 Grass Court Doubles Championships.

Jeffrey Aarts always made an enormous impact on those whose lives he touched. He had relationships that stretched far beyond the lines and net. This was evident when his friends and loved ones overflowed the Pound Ridge Community Church in New York at his funeral. His brother, Tom Aarts, called him a “great father,” a “great teacher” and a “protector.”

On behalf of our fellow USPTA family of tennis professionals, we salute Jeffrey. He will always be in our hearts and minds.
