key factsTotal began participating actively in the country’s upstream oil sector in the 1990s.In July 1997, the Group signed a technical service agreement (TSA) with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), the upstream subsidiary of state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), to provide support for upstream operations through a programme to enhance crude oil production in the country. Total’s advanced technology capabilities have contributed to Kuwait’s successful efforts to sustain production, notably in North Kuwait, and ensure steady supplies to international markets.In March 2012, Total signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) and Petrochemicals Industries Company (PIC), two wholly owned subsidiaries of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, to jointly develop a refining and petrochemicals project in China.

ENHaNCINg kuwaIt’S oIl pRoDuCtIoNtechnical service agreement with koC ● In July 1997, Total signed its first Technical Service

Agreement (TSA) with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to conduct surface and sub-surface investigations.

● The TSA has successively been renewed since then which has allowed Total to provide specific assistance to KOC in all the production areas in Kuwait. Lately, it was extended to provide specific assistance to enhance production of Kuwait’s northern fields.

● The TSA has enabled Total to position itself in the country and demonstrate its strong upstream capabilities.

aCCompaNyINg kuwaIt BEyoND ItS BoRDERS● Total partners with KUFPEC, the subsidiary responsible

for expanding KPC’s exploration and production business globally, in Block B in South Sudan and in Block 5 and 10 in Yemen.

● Kuwait Energy Company (KEC), the first independant oil and gas company in Kuwait, also entered in Block 5 in Yemen. KEC announced in early 2013 that it will take over the operatorship of the block with the purchase of the 15% interest from the former operator.

ZHaNgjIaNga top-performing downstream project● In March 2012, Total and Kuwait Petroleum

Corporation signed a MoU to develop the Zhangjiang refining and petrochemicals project in partnership with Sinopec.

● This project consists of a planned development of a large size (300,000 barrel per day), full-conversion refinery integrated with petrochemicals and marketing, in partnership with Sinopec.

● The proposed refining and petrochemicals platform will be designed to process Kuwaiti crude oil as feedstock and to produce high-quality refined and petrochemicals products.

● KPI, PIC and Total have agreed to form a consortium, which will potentially hold stakes in two joint-ventures, along with Sinopec.

● Total Marketing Middle East (TMME), a fully-owned affiliate based in Dubai, imports and markets Total lubricants in Kuwait under distributor arrangement with Gulf Express Company, a subsidiary of the local business conglomerate Al Babtain Group, and Elf lubricants under distributor agreement with Al Ghurair Lubricants.

● TMME has a more than 11 per cent market share in the lubricants market in Kuwait. Total also has a network of four functional Rapid Oil Change centers along with three Total Quartz Pitstop.

Work Centre and the Scientific Centre of Kuwait in a project aimed at protecting turtles found in Kuwaiti waters.

● This initiative, on which work began in 2008, involved surveillance of turtles and their environment; identification of the main threats to the turtles, and support for the development of protected marine areas.

CultuRal PRESERvatIoN● With a goal of preserving the rich Arab culture and

heritage, the Total Foundation, in partnership with the Paris-based cultural institution Arab World Institute, organised an exhibition titled The Golden Age of Arab Sciences in the Museum of Kuwait City in 2012. This exhibition presented rare artefacts and texts exploring the Arab world’s pioneering contributions to science, mathematics and philosophy.

● Total Kuwait and the Total Foundation are the unique sponsors of the archaeological excavation works conducted on Faïlaka Island under the patronage of the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). These works will contribute to value the exceptional cultural heritage of the island, mainly around the Hellenistic Fortress (3rd century BC) and the Al-Qusur monastery (7th–8th century AC), which will significantly help NCCAL register the island to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

EduCatIoN● In April 2013, Total signed an MoU with the College of

Engineering & Petroleum of Kuwait University. It provides the opportunity for selected qualified students to access scholarships, internships, and a chance to participate in specially designed conferences on oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical science and energy technology. Furthermore, Total plan to organize specific courses, lectures and conferences related to the oil and gas industry.
