Advances, Trends and Controversies in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry Dental professionals are inundated with numerous publications and as well with commercial salespersons. It is very diffi cult for the private practitioner to do thorough research and to differentiate what are miracle materials or simply mighty marketing. This seminar will highlight some of the current concepts in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and will address some of the controversies that plague our industry.

Murray Arlin, D.D.S., dip Perio, F.R.C.D.(C) received his D.D.S. from McGill University in 1977. After a 1 year Residency in General Dentistry at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, he began his Post-Graduate Program in Periodontics at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1980. Dr. Arlin received his Membership and Fellowship in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 1981 and 1983 respectively. He has taught at the Undergraduate and Periodontal Post-Graduate departments at the University of Toronto. Dr. Arlin received his training in Implant Dentistry initially in 1985 and since then has been actively involved in Continuing Education. He has placed and documented over 10,000 implants to date. He has lectured internationally and has authored many articles on Periodontics and Implant Dentistry.

ALL THAT GLITTERS AIN’T GOLD. The Era of Zirconia.Designed for clinicians and dental technicians who want to provide their patients/customers with zirconia based restorative options. This course provides an excellent foundation for growing your “metal free” practice or laboratory. Restorative solutions ranging from single-unit, multiple-unit, and full arch restorations will be discussed. Custom CAD/CAM abutments will be compared to commercially available “stock” zirconia abutments. To maximize aesthetic outcome layered vs. monolithic zirconia restorations will be discussed. The limitations of zirconia based restorations will be examined to help achieve predictability in its usage.

Learning Objectives:

• What is zirconia?• The unique material properties of zirconia• Advantages of zirconia based restorations• Case selection and lab communication• Advantages of full contoured monolithic zirconia vs. layered zirconia copings• Limitations of zirconia based CAD/CAM

All-On-4 Treatment ConceptThe “All-On-4” treatment concept for the full arch edentulous rehabilitation can provide simplifi ed, predictable, aesthetic, fi xed and immediate functional teeth in 1 day.

The advantages of the “All-On-4” concept will usually require fewer implants, minimal morbidity, avoid the need for extensive grafting, less fi nancial cost, potential immediate temporization with same day fi xed teeth, predictable esthetics and extremely high patient satisfaction and acceptance.

This course will address the clinical skills required to achieve optimal success with the ‘All-On-4” treatment concept. A step by step evaluation of all parameters will be addressed with comprehensive hands on practical exercises with the models provided. The implementation of the “All-On-4” treatment concept will require several parameters to be covered in detail as follows:

• Systematic pretreatment evaluation and patient selection criteria• Surgical parameters for number (4-6) and location of implants to achieve

initial stability for the maxillary and mandibular arches • Immediate loading consideration and protocol• Step by step review for the conversion technique from the complete dentures

to the screw retained immediate provisional• Final fi xed prosthetic parameters for optimal esthetics and functional

occlusion

Esthetic Realities for Today and Tomorrow What will separate us more then ever before in the years to come will be our talent level and ability to understand the clinical side of dentistry. This course will focus on the “Team Concept” of restorative dentistry and the importance of the technicians ability to effectively control the esthetic outcome. Under the best of circumstances the transfer of information between the dentist and technician for the fabrication of restorations is diffi cult and challenging. Our educated patients and the advancement of materials has created a need for us to didactically move through the diagnostic process including biomechanically, functionally, periodontally and esthetically. This program will present a rational methodology to help eliminate the frustrations often encountered during this endeavor and discuss the future relationship that will prevail in the years to come. With the advent of newer technologies such as photographic, video and CAD/CAM, our role in the communication process through preoperative mounted casts, the diagnostic wax up, preparation guides, and the importance of photography as an aid for ceramic builds and color communication will still be a value to the dental community.

• Case management• Diagnostic communication• Preparation guided Ceramic layering and contours• The use on new technologies• The importance of photographic communication and perception

Implant Overdenture Treatment Options and Case Presentation for Patient AcceptanceThere are various implant overdenture treatment modalities utilizing different attachments, bars, removable and fi xed options. Each treatment option offers both advantages and disadvantages to the clinician and patients. All the treatment options can be overwhelming and confusing when presented to our patients especially when dealing with wide range of professional fees. This presentation will review in detail all implant overdenture treatment modalities and provide a simple to understand fl ow chart to be utilized during our case presentations for our patients. Factors and parameters that infl uence case presentations and patient acceptance will also be covered to improve the rate of acceptance for the practicing denturist.

The UltraSuction™ Denture System, and the Reline and Revitalize Alternative This unique course will explore two different subjects. First, we will discuss the UltraSuction™ Denture System from OnCore, a patented innovative system that is comprised of one-way air valves that are placed on either side of the linguals of upper or lower dentures. These valves connect to a chamber that creates suction around the entire arch. The system creates enhanced retention of the denture base to the tissue and improved comfort to the patient. Then, we will discuss a technique for completely revitalizing a patient’s existing denture as a less costly, but esthetically pleasing alternative to replacing the denture. We will explore cutting-edge techniques for naturalizing the denture base and denture teeth using modern light cure composites. The ultimate objective is an existing appliance that has been not only been restored but signifi cantly enhanced.
