Principal Browne’s (Farewell) Message

It is with mixed feelings that I write this final comment to

the Don Mills’ school community. This is the time of year when we say goodbye and best wishes to the graduates and various staff members, while wishing returning students and staff a wonderful, relaxing summer. For me, it will be my final goodbye after 35 years in education, and 14 years as principal of Don Mills Collegiate. Retirement is at hand and I approach this new journey with a mixture of emotions. I will definitely miss the vibrant, positive atmosphere and the amazing staff and student body that made Don Mills an exciting place to work. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the school community for your support and friendship. I have had a positive working relationship with many different School Council Executives and parents with whom I have had the pleasure of meeting over the years. I thank you for your time commitment and efforts as we worked together to make your child’s experience a positive and rewarding one.

My hope has been that when students graduate from Don Mills, and enter higher education or the work environment that they are equipped with the necessary skills to be successful and that the four or five years spent in this building was both challenging and rewarding.

There will always be a special place in my heart for the DMCI community. I wish you all good health and success in your future endeavors.

Congratulations again Don Mills Photo Students!

Congratulations again Don Mills Photo Students!

Ms. Peruga's Grade 12 pho-tography class won several awards at this years Ontario Wide Henrys Photo Contest. With over a thousand partici-pants and only four positions

for Black and White Portrait work, our students filled three of those four spots. Incredible! We won 2nd place and two honorable mentions! Well done! We are all proud.

Above: “The Pond”. Students in our “Tech Design and Green Industries” program have helped to imagine, design, and create impressive landscaping throughout Don Mills Collegiate.

Saying Farewell ... It is with mixture of sadness and pride that we say goodbye to some of our valued staff. Ms. McConnell, Ms. Carstairs, Ms. Clark-Hart, and Mr. Maurer will all be greatly missed — and we hope that they will one day return to DMCI!

Mr. Orbach has decided to retire after 53 years of teaching. As a one-man Co-Op machine, it is ironic that, having placed so many students into jobs over the years, he is now ready to retire from this one. We wish him all the best, and hope that his new play “Les hommes de Tel” (trans: “The Men of Tel”) is a big success!

Shannon Day and Betty Garnett have run the Main Office efficiently, effectively, and always with a touch of class. They will be missed more than they know.

Lastly, it is not without some sadness that we say goodbye to our esteemed leader, Principal Cindy Browne. Goodbye, or as they say in “Les hommes de Tel” , "au revoir".

Cooking up a Storm:

Breakfast for Learning Still Going Strong

Breakfast for Learning (BFL) has had another successful year at DMCI and is going strong after 7 years. Approx-

imately 200 middle school and collegiate students drop in each morning any time between 7:30 and 8:30 for a

healthy breakfast to start the day.

BFL Co-ordinator, Luiza Vyalshina, prepares menus and meals each morning with the help of a small committed

team of student volunteers, teachers, and Educational Assistants from both Don Mills Middle School and Don

Mills Collegiate. This year’s favourite items have been Luiza’s egg and bread casserole, cheese quesadillas, French

toast, and, as always, chocolate milk.

BFL began in 2006 with a substantial donation from the Gray-Haddon Family Foundation which funded the pro-

gram through to the end of 2010. The program has been funded through Breakfast for Learning and the Toronto

Foundation for Student Success. Next year, we are thankful to also receive funding from the City of Toronto and

the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Students and staff also make donations each morning. Ms.

Yen Vi Tuong, Guidance Counsellor, ran a giftcard fundraiser and the program has appreciated special donations

from Mr. Kunanec’s Green Industries and Tech Design Class and proceeds from the Co-op Program’s haunted

house organized by Mr. Orbach over the years. We appreciate the ongoing support from DMCI’s Administration

and the contribution of SAC funds to BFL. Fundraising will be a year-long focus to continue the program next

year.

BFL is based upon the belief and evidence which shows that a healthy diet is a strong foundation for learning. Not

only does the program provide a healthy start to the day, but it is also a valuable meeting time both socially and

academically as students and staff gather in the cafeteria to chat or finish homework before class begins. BFL con-

tinues to be a source of sustenance in many ways to the DMCI and DMMS community.

The Month of May was Asian Heritage Month, an oc-

casion for all Canadians to celebrate various Asian cultures and acknowledge the many contributions of Asian Canadians to our communities and to our country. On May 6th, DMCI held an assembly to cele-brate Asian Heritage Month. We were fortunate enough to have Toronto City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam speak at our school and she delivered an inspiring and moving keynote address to our students. Bhangra dancers from the Shaan Punjab Dee Dance Group graced our stage for two dance performances: the first dance was accompanied by a variety of beats of Punjabi drum called “Dhol” and the second was a fusion of traditional and contemporary dance. We also in-vited the Consulate General of Japan in Toronto to present at our assembly.

They shared an interesting slideshow entitled “Traditions That Resonate” which explored Japanese traditions, its evolution and relevance in modern society. And finally, our assembly featured home-grown talent from a DMCI student, Yalin Sun, who performed beautifully on a traditional Chinese string in-strument called the “Guzheng.” Yalin’s incredible talent has earned her the title of DMCI’s “Guzheng Guru”! After the as-sembly the Consulate of Japan in Toronto generously hosted hands-on workshops on Origami and Japanese Calligraphy. DMCI would like to thank all of our presenters, including our wonderful student MCs Harshneet Singh and Vivian An, for

their contributions to our Asian Heritage Assembly and making it a great success. We hope to continue this tradition next year and any sugges-tions for presenters are welcome.

The Great and Powerful Betty ~ A few words on retirement from our favourite Office Administrator ~

After many months of deliberation, I woke up one morning and made my decision. After 22 years with Don Mills Collegiate, I have decided to retire. It was not an easy decision.

Don Mills is a good school and I’m not saying that because I work here. The school is made up of more than teachers – there are EAs, SNAs, Care-taking, Noon Hour Assistants, Office Staff, Administrators, Volunteers and most importantly, the students. Ah, the students. What a wonderful and varied group: from DD to OH, to regular stream, to ESL, to CyberARTS, to Gifted. I will take with me many memories of the students throughout the years.

My husband and I are looking forward to travelling. No, not to Europe, but driving through Ontario, Canada, and the Eastern US. We also have our first grandchild to spend time with!

There have been many changes since I first came to DMCI but I feel the school has still retained the same welcoming atmosphere. There will be things I will miss about working and some things I will not. I can say for sure that I will truly miss the students.

GRADUATING STUDENT TO RECEIVE TOP HONORS FOR CREATIVE WRITING

~

The Poetry Institute of Canada has awarded Jeremy Wang, who is graduating in

June, the first place for original poetry in the Young Writers' Category. His submis-sion was selected from among the thousands of poems sent by young writers from all the Canadian provinces. Although many of our students' poetry and short prose submissions have been published in the Institute's anthology, over the past few years, it is the first time that a DMCI student receives this highly prestigious award.

The World is Flat

Flat Classroom Project

Congratulations to Chanet Trac, Linda Low, Jennifer Du, Lily Wang, and Kevin Kang for winning top prizes on this semester's Flat Classroom Project. All the DMCI Grade 10 Gifted students who participated in the project did an amazing job, but these students showcased their talents and helped to distinguish DMCI among the 15 participating high schools from all various locations througout North and South America and Asia. There were a total of 184 total videos submitted on this project, and DMCI was definitely very well represented! Special congratulations to Chanel, who won Best Overall Video!

Grade 11 Student Recipient of Two Literary Awards

Katarina Pejovic’s love of writing combined with outstanding creative competency has re-ceived public attention and well-deserved honors in April, 2013, when she won two Dorothy Shoemaker Literary Awards. Katarina’s short story “The Doll Gallery” placed first in the 2012 Youth Prose category, and her poem “Sympathy for the Moth” was awarded a second place for Youth Poetry. In a ceremony that took place in Kitchener, at the Forest Heights Community Library, our Grade 11 student was presented with her literary awards and had an opportunity to share with the audience selected excerpts from her literary output. The Dorothy Shoemak-er Literary Awards Contest, conducted in cooperation with numerous school boards and pub-lic and regional library systems throughout southern Ontario, began in 1967 as a Centennial project. Currently, Dorothy Shoemaker’s legacy of support for aspiring writers continues through her generous personal endowment.

COURSES, CREDITS AND PATHWAYS

Students effectively use an online tool to choose courses for the following year. Information is pro‐vided via assemblies for all grades, hands‐on support in the Library during lunch and an evening session for parents/guardians. www.myblueprint.ca provides families with an opportunity to be dynamically involved in this process, helping their children to set goals and make realistic choices.

The month of June is always a busy one. The school year ends with final presentations, assess‐ments and exams. At the same time, a number of students are being consulted regarding course conflicts in next year’s schedule, and in some cases, summer school planning.

If a student completes a summer school credit course within the TDSB, the transcript will be auto‐matically updated. For TCDSB summer school, the original final report card must be presented to Guidance in September. Private school credits must be mailed directly by the private school to DMCI. Students who did not pre‐register for a failed compulsory course will be automatically re‐timetabled for the prerequisite credit. At the start of the school year, changes to students’ timeta‐bles will only be made if necessary, i.e., to reflect updated credit course completions and to correct conflicts, errors and incomplete schedules. Students will only have one opportunity to request such a change.

We communicate with senior students via assemblies, classroom visits, individual appoint‐ments, and email. Despite the growing use of social media, colleges and universities still correspond with students via email, so it’s important to have an active and professional email address. Students are encour‐aged to maintain an organized document system, both online and in your physical filing system. While the initial stages of a student's post‐secondary application are processed online, there is still significant hardcopy mail correspondence between students and their post‐secondary institutions of choice.

Boys Baseball

After reaching the North Regional Finals for the first team in recent memory last year, the 2013 Don Mills Varsity Baseball team had high expectations going into the start of the season. All returning players and the addition of rookies Sam Turcotte and Kevin Jing and cagey veteran Colin Rus-sell gave this team a reason to believe the team would go far in the standings. Sadly, Coach Nicolaou (who had been coaching the team with Kamen for the better part of the last decade together) decided to hang up the jockstrap after tendinitis and other is-sues forced him to give up this assignment. Coach Nicolaou did a tremendous job for us during his tenure and the teams and school thank him for all his hard work over the years.

Fortunately, Mr. Forsyth (with some prior baseball coaching experience in his resume) was able to assume Assistant Coach duties for the year.

For the first time ever, Don Mills Baseball team was promoted to Tier 1 East Division and therefore we would be competing against, in theory, higher level teams. We would also have to do more travelling to baseball parks since the old standby, Bond Park was not part of the equation for Tier 1 East. Travelling this year took us to Heron Park (at Morningside), Stan Wadlow Park ,Wishing Well Park and UT Scarborugh baseball park.

The team got off to a great start. After three games, we were 2-1 with excellent pitching by freshman Sam Turcotte show-ing excellent promise on the mound.

The players on the team had pushed since the very start of the season for a chance to compete at the provincial level (aka OFSAA). Thanks to Ms. Browne and Mr. Reid the team was given that opportunity.

On Thursday May 16th, DMCI competed against two of the top schools in the city, Northern and Etobicoke. Austin O’Boyle and Tyler Dobie respectively pitched remarkably well in the two games but both teams were slightly better than us in both games and we were coincidentally defeated 6-4 in both games.

The team was really focused on the OFSAA Qualifier to the detriment of the regular season and before we knew it, we were down 2-5. The team’s morale was low yet we knew we were a better team than our subpar record showed.

The team rebounded hugely with an excellent Quarter Final win 10-3 on May 22nd at Wishing Well. The team seemed to be gelling at the right time. Then, in the Semi Final game on May 27th, Austin O’Boyle held the top seeded team, Sir John A. MacDonald to only one run in a 3-1 victory for Don Mills. Sam Turcotte started the final game against Sir Oliver Mowat on May 29th. Sam pitched beautifully through three innings but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning. Austin O’Boyle came in to relieve but by the end of the inning, Don Mills was down 5-2. Don Mills came back with a run but that was all we could generate in a heartbreaking 5-3 loss against a very talented Mowat team.

Due to the success of the team in the playoffs, Don Mills qualifies for the City Championships on Friday June 7th at Univer-sity of Toronto Scarborough Campus. We wish the team well in this tournament. We also want to thank the following grad-uating students for three years of dedication and hard work. Thanks goes out to Josh Hanson, Jasmeet Singh and Andrew Taylor. Good luck in all future endeavours, guys.

FITNESS CONNECTION — PARTNERSHIP WITH DMCI

For nearly two years now, Fitness Con-nection and DMCI have joined together

in a partnership with the combined goal of getting the local youth engaged in healthy lifestyles. Fitness Con-nection has opened its doors to multiple DMCI physi-

cal education clas-ses, allowing the students free range of the facilities as a part of their physical education requirement in high school. Fitness Connection also sent a few of its instructors over to DMCI to teach nearly a dozen Group Fitness classes at DMCI during “Fitness Week”.

BCCET (BE SET!) FOR YOUR CAREER PATHWAY! There's some exciting developments in Experiential Learning at Don Mills C.I.! With changes to the department organization for the 2013-2014 school year, we are updating our department name from CCET to BCCET!

That means, with experiential learning, you'll BCCET (BE SET!) FOR YOUR CAREER PATHWAY - whether you're focused on Busi-ness, Computer engineering or computer science, Communications technology, or Exploring Technologies. We are redefining our labs, our courses, our access and use of technology, and working to make your classes more relevant, more hands-on, and just MORE. The whole program is trying to go more digital to have the most up to date and relevant content for students to learn efficiently and with differ-entiated instruction techniques. No matter what industry or career students want to be involved in post-secondary, they all need business and technology skills to excel in jobs that haven't been created yet - "technacy" is key. We are also looking at developing advanced place-ment course options in our department, and investigating partnering for dual credit options. So, be sure to check back at our website at: http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/donmillsci/InstructionalAreas/TechnologicalEducation/CCETLabs.aspx 2013 Semester 2 Highlights TGJ, TEJ, and TIJ had a Careermash guest speaker Jonathan Reznik. Jonathan is a software developer and development manager at Clear-Canvas, a Toronto-based medical imaging start-up that designs open-source software systems for major hospitals, small clinics and re-searchers alike. He works on the design and construction of ClearCanvas imaging products and manages a team of developers. For a video about his role and the Careermash program you can look at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzSSVwwmjzE We had 22 entries for the Ontario Mining Association's "So You Think You Know Mining" Video Contest and we have at least one major cash prize-winning group for "Mining Style" done by Clarabelle Lee, Teodora Pasca, Danielle Duhaney, and Arsalan Asif. This group will be attending the awards gala on June 6th at the ROM to make their speech and collect their prize. We had Grace Yin win a Silver medal in the Job Interview category at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition and the Gold at the TDSB level.

The TGJ - Communications Technology classes went on a few field trips this semester. They went downtown to learn to video shoot news stories and completed streeters, interviews, and did their own stand up introductions for their TWIST TV city topics then came back to edit them. Then they went to the CBC museum, and then watched the taping of THE HOUR WITH GEORGE STROUMBOLOPOLOUS at the CBC studios. They also went to the GAME ON 2.O exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre and analysed how museum exhibits are created with communications technology tools and the production process. The TIJ - Exploring Technologies courses went with Ms. Matheson and Ms. Dunlop to an exhibition to look at the design process and find out about manufacturing, safety training, and the career opportunities available in engineering in May and went through the different facilitated pavilions. Next year the new TGV3M/4M course is scheduled to start up focused on Media Applications, TV, Film, and Theatrical Staging Skills Development. Students will be working to learn hands-on skills with audio-visual installations, digital signage, television tools, and more.

Canadian Computing Competition

Congratulations to Timothy Li who has outstanding results in the Canadian Computing Competition held on February 23, 2013. His score was 71out of 75 (nobody else scored higher this year). Timothy was invited to Stage 2 of the CCC, an intensive week-long training camp and competition at the University of Waterloo. Timo-thy took home a bronze medal. Unfortunately, he did not make the Canadian National Team for the International Olympiad in Informatics. However, he is only a Grade 9 student, and will have more chances to try to get to the International Olympiad!

2505 Electric Sheep Robotics Team Electrifies the Competition

(Not hurting them though, really!)

This 2012-2013 Vex Robotics season Don Mills entered three tournaments each with outstanding results. In the first tournament held at Woburn Collegiate, out of 76 teams, Don Mills placed 13th. After a week of intensive hard work they entered the second tournament at Crescent School, entered the playoffs and lost in the finals. Invited to Rick Hanson for a third tournament, 2505 shows that they could stack against schools across the province by making it into the quarter finals. All in all, it has been a successful and interesting year. Next year we will strive to top the excellent performance achieved this year!

Her physical stature notwith-standing, Cindy Browne is a giant. After a long and distinguished ca-reer, one can safely say that Don Mills Collegiate, as it is today, is truly the house that Cindy built.

Reflecting upon a person’s retire-ment, in a forum such as this, af-fords people the opportunity to think about the impact that a re-tiring individual has had on them, their team, and the atmosphere in which they work. There are few words I can say today that match the impact and the legacy ex-pressed on a warm Friday after-noon in early June, when a thou-sand students and staff all gath-ered on the back field to dance and sing for the leader they so highly revere. Cindy’s profound respect for her students, staff, and parents has engendered a pro-found respect from them; as she works hard for those around her, those around her are pleased to work hard for her.

Having worked with Cindy for four years, I have seen a model of leadership, a method of compas-sion, and multitude of patience. She is as comfortable speaking with Premiers and dignitaries as she is teasing Caretakers Sheldon and Andrew for leaving a tasty chocolate appetizer under her chair for the family of mice that have long occupied Cindy’s office.

As a Vice Principal, I have always appreciated the delicate manner by which she demanded little, yet always expected much.

Cindy, you have always allowed me to stand on your shoulders,

while never staring over mine. I thank you for your kindness, your dedication, and the incredible model of leadership you have forged. You can leave assured that the house that Cindy built is left with a strong foundation and is on sturdy ground. And always know that you will be missed by stu-dents, staff, parents, and a small but loving family of mice.

School Council Dates Looking Forward … EQAO (www.eqao.com)

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an independent provincial agency funded by the Government of Ontario. EQAO’s mandate is to conduct province-wide tests at key points in every student’s primary, junior and secondary education and report the results to educators, parents and the public. EQAO acts as a catalyst for increasing the success of Ontario students by measuring their achievement in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. The objective and reliable assessment results are evidence that adds to the current knowledge about student learning and serves as an important tool for improvement at the individual, school, school board and provincial levels. Students will write an EQAO math test in Grade 9 (January 15-16, and June 10-11, 2014), and an EQAO literacy test in Grade 10 (March 27th, 2014).

School councils are an excellent way for parents to get involved in their child's educa-tion. Our school has an elected school council that is an important forum for involving all members of the school community in issues that affect the education of students. The school council is made up of an elected committee of parents, staff and student repre-sentatives, appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership which includes all parents of children attending the school. The school council advises the principal on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, curric-ulum goals and priorities, school budget priorities, school safety, renovation plans, after school activities, and criteria for the selection of new principals.
