Tainted pork is latest food scandal to hit China, March 17, 2011

------Products marketed under Shuanghui Group's Shineway brand were produced from pigs that were fed clenbuterol, an additive that can speed up muscle building and fat burning to produce leaner pork, the reports said. The additive, known among farmers as "lean meat powder", is banned in China because if eaten by humans it can lead to dizziness, heart palpitations and profuse sweating, the reports said……

Heat stress

Pigs are not able to sweat and pant

Thermo-neutral zone of sows: Range of temperatures between which an animal

feels comfortable Between 12°C and 22°C (Black et al., 1993

Sows inseminated during hot period have lower reproductive performance

Developments Genome sequence & SNP’s

Genome sequence => very many SNP’s

Technology for large- scale genotyping at low-costs

Pig Genome Sequence

Page 23: topigs balanced breeding presentation vietnam

What is a SNP ??SNP = Single-nucleotide

polymorphismA DNA sequence variation

occurring when a single nucleotide — A, T, C, or G — in the genome (or other shared sequence) differs between paired chromosomes

For example, two sequenced DNA fragments from different individuals, AAGCCTA to AAGCTTA, contain a difference in a single nucleotide. In this case we say that there are two alleles : C and T.

Page 24: topigs balanced breeding presentation vietnam

SUNJIN July 15 2009 24

Quantitative versus Genomic selection for reproduction

Quantitative selection until today very effective for quantitative traits

New options for PRRS resistanceImpact of genomic selection dependent

upon:1. costs of SNP genotyping (50.000

300.000 SNP’s)2. added value of SNP for accuracy of

breeding value: costs benefitsIn near future combination of Quantative &

Genomic selection expected!!!

Page 25: topigs balanced breeding presentation vietnam

25

Balanced breeding !!How to ensure more reproductive sow without problems

for health or vitality of piglets and sow? more piglets born alive, less death more piglets born alive but also weaned high reproductive sows but less culling PERFORMANCE WITH NO HORMONS =

FOOD SAFETY TOPIGS uses selection strategy that takes these

aspects into account

Page 26: topigs balanced breeding presentation vietnam

SUNJIN July 15 2009 26

The sow of 2020

There will be further genetic improvement of litter size along balanced breeding

Extra piglet born Extra piglet weaned Dedicated quality improvement along:

wider temperature neutral zone Improvement of vitality/disease resistance application of new genomic tools

Sow 2020: >15 piglets born alive => 14 piglets weaned/litter without intensive human support
