First Day• Remember the school day starts at home.

• Be prepared to make thefirst day as stress-free as possible.

• Preparedness can reduce anxiety.

• A healthy breakfast makes a good start.

First Day Procedure• Arrive at about 9am.

• Bags on racks outside the classroom.

• Paint shirts and library bags in labelled boxes.

• Pin your child’s name tag on.

• Indicate how your child is getting home on the sheet provided.

• Enter the classroom and settle your child in.

Once inside……

• GET BUSY!

Then…..say goodbye and leave with a happy, positive comment

Tips for Goodbyes and Separation

• All children are different and some are full of surprises.• Always say goodbye. This builds trust.• Let your child know when you’ll be back to pick them up

and show them where you will be.• Have lots of practice separations.• If necessary develop a goodbye ritual. A fun way to

make hard goodbyes easier.• May want to hide a surprise in the car for your child to

find after their day at school.• If you’re the one feeling vulnerable…try to put on a brave

face.• Have something planned for you to do on your child’s

first day at school.

• Some children get nervous and complain of tummy pains.

• Listen to their fears and worries. Try to answer their questions honestly and positively.

• Ask your child what they think may help. • Try not to let them see or hear you worry.• If the worries don’t get better soon, talk to the

teacher about the best way to help your child.

Home time

• For the first few weeks the Kinder children will come out from their classes at about 3pm.

• Normal home time is 3:15pm

• Be punctual and wait in the same place where your child and the teacher can see you from their verandah.

• May have a snack for your child.• Your child may be very tired and out of sorts.• Some may be asleep before your get home others

may not be able to sleep.• May need a substantial afternoon tea or early

evening meal. Be flexible.• Try not to have too many after-school activities or

jobs to do on the way home.• Listen to your child. Avoid asking too many

questions. They may or may not want to talk. They might also want some quiet time.

Parent/Teacher Relationships

• Say “hello” when you get the chance.

• Let the teacher get to know you. They have a lot of new people to get to know.

• Don’t wait for parent interviews.

• Tell the teacher when you’re happy with something as well as when you are concerned.

Parent Conferences• Early in Term 1.

– Discuss any thing the teacher needs to know about your child.

– Introduce and explain homework and home reading.

– Let you know your child’s ‘News’ day and library days.

– Ask for parent helpers.– Discuss how your child has settled in at school.– Limited to ten minutes per child. Make a list of

questions and prioritise them.

Lunch tips• Children definitely won’t eat more at school than they do at

home.• No fridges or cutlery available.• Have some ‘practice school lunches’ at home.• Love notes. www.getreadyforschool.com/lunchbox1.htm• Uneaten food• Reminder: No nuts, peanut butter, Nutella or eggs.

For the reluctant eater:• Cookie cutters.• 3 bowl approach. Children choose:

1) fruit 2)dairy 3)treat, then add a sandwich and water.

• Canteen facility is available 5 days a week.

Ordering Lunch• Write child’s name, class and order on the

outside of paper bag. One bag for hot food and one bag for cold.

• Paper bags can be supplied from home or purchased at the canteen.

• Lunch orders are to be placed at the canteen prior to school commencing.

• A menu and pricelist will be issued early in 2009.• Lunches are delivered to the

child’s classroom at eating time.

Making Friends• Know and practise basic social skills.• Encourage a shy child to speak up.• Role play. Show strategies to make friends and

deal with problems.

• Children may not know the names of their friends.

A Typical Day9:00 Home reading

9:20 -11:25 Morning Session. Roll, messages, songs, etc.

English – phonics, handwriting, reading, writing, talking and listening

11:45 – 12:45 Maths SessionMathematics in class or in groups with other classes.

1:35 – 3:15 Afternoon SessionAfternoon reading, COGs units, art/craft activities, Scripture is on Wednesday afternoon.

SPORT usually commences on the first Friday in March. COMPUTERS and LIBRARY also form part of the school day.

• Adventure Playground – is out of bounds before and after school. It is only to be used under direct teacher supervision.

• Before 9am – Students are to remain seated near ‘The Shed’ and outside the Stage One classrooms near the top office.

• Money and Food – These are two thingswe don’t share at school.

• No Hat, No Play – In Terms 1 and 4, children must wear a hat when in the playground.

Before and After School Care

• No before school care.

• 2 options for after school care through the Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre.

- Pipe Band Hall in Darling Street- East Centre in Myall Street

• Children will catch buses to these venues.

• Teachers will take the children to the buses until routine is in place.
