Flaws in the SPF Rating System?The FDA’s SPF rating

system rates sunscreen for protection against UVB light, but not against UVA light.

UVA light penetrates deeper thanUVB through the outer portion of theskin. This means UVA damage islargely responsible for prematureaging of the skin. Longterm exposureto UVA light can also potentiallyresult in skin cancer.

To protect your skin, you need pro-tection against both UVA and UVBrays. Don’t rely solely on the SPF rating system, because it providesinformation only on UVB protection.

The only way to be sure that yoursunscreen provides UVA protectionis to read the label and make sure itcontains effective UVA blockingagents, which include avobenzone,oxybenzone, zinc oxide, and/or titanium oxide.
