Home Learning Guidance Topic: Explorers Year 1-wc 06.07.20 This is a guidance document of suggested activities which could be completed at home to support home learning whilst your child is not in school. Please refer to our school website and the curriculum pages for specific information for each subject on learning outcomes related to age related year group expectations. The activities are only a guide for home learning and could be adapted or extended. All children have access to online learning. If you have any questions about log ins, please email the school. Reading Independent reading – All children should read daily at home either independently or with an adult. Hearing a story and the language is extremely beneficial. Reading Challenge: Read as many different books about travellers and explorers as you can. If any of the story events link to things which your child has experienced, do please discuss this with them. Keep a book diary to share at school. When reading your child a story, if it has a repeated pattern, can they join in with the repeated words and phrases? Challenge- Can they make up any alternative endings to the story? Our suggested book for in school this week is “The Troll” by Julia Donaldson. This can be found on YouTube. Discuss the story, who are the characters? What did the troll want to do? Where did the Troll go? Was it a fun adventure? Can you draw your own troll and label it? Can you make your own menu for a pirate crew? Purple Mash – You could look on Serial Mash for a new book, take the quizzes and do the activities. There are some Talking Stories set as a 2Do until the end of term. They use a lot of the phonics that the children are familiar with and have games to play to move the stories along. You could also continue to use Oxford Owls. Phonics – This week we are looking at alternative spellings for the /ar/ phoneme (bar carpark palm father rather) which actually partly depends on how you pronounce words like “fast” and “master” as some English accents differ! I would recommend only looking at words that you and your family say with an /ar/ sound. Can they sort words according to how they are spelt? Can they find words with these letter sounds in the books that they have been reading? Where do pirates like to do their shopping? Arrrr-gos! There is a “phoneme spotter” sentences at the end which contains the /ar/ phonemes and others the children have already done. There are Phase 5 games with these sounds on PhonicsPlay.co.uk and a free login for home learning during the current situation. It is MARCH20 with a password home. “Best Bet” is a good game to play for deciding which phoneme to use. Purple Mash also has some spelling games as a “2Do”. Maths KIRFS –Practise the Key Instant Recall Facts. (Ongoing.) This week’s White Rose Maths is all about using all of your Maths skills to add and subtract, building on them to be able to cross 10 when you add two numbers together. It shows you how, by splitting numbers up and finding pairs to make ten, you can learn a great mental maths strategy to make addition easier in the future. There are some activities on Purple Mash as a “2Do” for when your child is confident with this concept.

Reading

Independent reading – All children should read daily at home either independently or with an adult. Hearing a story and the language is extremely beneficial. Reading Challenge: Read as many different books about travellers and explorers as you can. If any of the story events link to things which your child has experienced, do please discuss this with them. Keep a book diary to share at school. Maths

KIRFS –Practise the Key Instant Recall Facts. Purple Mash – The addition and subtraction racing games will continue to be available on Purple Mash. ICT GAMES- there are lots of addition and subtraction games on here to have a go at.

Writing

Handwriting – Practise your handwriting – Our handwriting guidance on letter formation is available on the website. (Ongoing) Writing: “The Troll” by Julia Donaldson. This can be found on you tube. Discuss the story, who are the characters? What did the troll want to do? Where did the Troll go? Was it a fun adventure? Can you draw your own troll and label it? Can you make your own menu for a pirate crew? Can you make a sandwich of your choice and write instructions on how to make it? You can add drawings to it. Can you make a poster about the wonderful Trolls meals? Really BIG writing challenge!: Can you make your own story based on this book? You could pick three (or two or four!) places the pirates can visit. Now think of some really horrible things for them to eat – one for each place! Next, decide where the troll is going to go –the same number as the pirates. Put the places in order in your plan one at a time: pirates, troll, pirates, troll, pirates, troll. Draw the pictures, write the captions, and finish with a really big healthy feast! Purple Mash – There is an activity to write captions to describe a pirate on Purple Mash. It is set as a 2Do to run to the end of the half term. There are also some new grammar games on Purple Mash. What happens if you add “un” to the start of a verb or adjective? Can you make a new word? What does it mean? What words can you use to join two sentences together?

Spellings

Practise this week’s spellings in groups of 5 words at time with your child. (These can also be found on Spelling Shed.) The or and ore grapheme. Forty, north, horse, score, wore, morning, torn, more, before, shore If your child usually spells the common exception words, please ask them to try to spell as many of the above words as they can. ‘Common exception words for year 1’ can be found online if you want to practise these as well. There is a new common exception words spelling quiz on Purple Mash as a “2Do”.

Science

Our topics this term are: Seasonal Changes and Plants If you have grown any plants, please keep a record of it by measuring and recording it. It would be lovely to see some photos of them. Can you draw or collage a plant and a tree? You can then label the different parts and say what they need to help them grow. If you have any spare seedlings, you could try an experiment! What happens if one is kept in the dark? Or goes without water? What do you think will happen? Online learning: Purple Mash has some activities to show how plants grow, as well as some fun drawing activities.

Topic/Project Carrying on with explorers, can you make a table saying what the similarities and differences are between Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. Can you find out about a different explorer from our time? Maybe look at Bear Grylls or Steve Backshall and say why they are so famous.
