    TOPIC 3

    CONSTRUCTION PROJECT SCHEDULING

  • 8/20/2019 Topic 3 Project Scheduling

    2/18

    Introduction

    •Determination of timing and sequenceactivities.

•Should be detailed to:o show each WBS to be performed,o start and end date of each activities, relationship between activities

o and expected duration of each activities

Advantages of good scheduling:o Reduce construction timeo Reduce cost of labor, overhead and interest on

capitalo Provide continuous flow of worko

Increase productivityo Provide specific milestones to work toward and

indications of progress towards those goalso Provide control and management of material, m

    labot, time and equipment.

    Gantt Chart

•Developed by Henry Gantt in 1917.•Is a list of activities displayed in a timeEach activity is represented by a bar. T

position and length of the bar reflectsstart date, duration and end date of thactivity.

    Gantt Chart

•Gantt Chart represent:o The list of activities

o Start and end date of each activities

o The duration of each activities

o The overlapping activities with its durat

o The start and completion date of projec

    Gantt Chart

•Advantages:o easy to interpret and simple

o widely used in construction project

    o easy to understand

    o visual clarity

o does not require extensive interrelationactivities.

    Gantt Chart

•Disadvantages:o difficult for update status of project

o does not show interdependency of activitie

o does not integrate with cost or resources

o limited application for detailed constructio

o does not show the critical activities and flo

o ineffective in forecasting effects of changes

    Critical Path Method CPM)

•The basis of CPM is a logic diagram ornetwork which represent the activitiesconstruction project.

•CPM is a method to determine the sta

finish date for each activity, calculate tduration of project and identify the cractivities in project.

    12/18

Advantages:o provides interrelationship of activities and

scheduling of cost and resources.o provides more detailed information that is

    in project management.

    o

can be used in simple or complex project.o The critical activities can be identified in th

network those help managers in setting thepriorities in construction project.

    Critical Path Method CPM)

    13/18

•Disadvantages:o requires an extensive description of theinterrelationship of activities.

o requires more effort and training to bec

    an effective user.

    o CPM can become complex.

    Critical Path Method CPM)

    Critical Path Method CPM)

    15/18

•ADM using arrows to represent theactivities and connecting them at nodshow the dependencies.

    •ADM uses only Finish-to-Start (FS)

dependencies and may require the usedummy activities to define all logicalrelationship correctly.

    Critical Path Method CPM)-ADM

Rules in developing ADM:o The network may have only one beginning node a

ending node.o The logic states all activities coming into the node

complete before any activities can start.o The logic must be exact regarding predecessors,

successors and concurrent relationship.o There must be at least one continuous path from

beginning of the project to the end of the project any dangling nodes.

o Each activity must be represent by one arrow only
