De La Salle University turned off its lights and non-critical appliances on 26 March 2011 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm

for Earth Hour, an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). DLSU’s participation in Earth Hour is anchored on its commitment

to act as a responsible steward of the environment.

A delegation led by the University Student Government (USG) was also present at the symbolic switch-off

held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.

2401 (twen´te fôr´,o, wun) is a landmark number along Taft Avenue. It is the location ID of De La Salle University, home to outstanding faculty and students, and birthplace of luminaries in business, public service, education, the arts, and science. And 2401 is the name of the official newsletter of DLSU, featuring developments and stories of interest about the University.

GRADUATE STUDENTS OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING RECEIVED RECOGNITION for their outstanding research work, which they

presented at the Analog Devices Philippines Technical Symposium

DLSU Biology Full Professor Dr. Jose Carandang VI presents the highlights of the Food Institute workshop during the launch.

Salle Food Institute last March 24 at the

20th floor of the Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall.

The Institute will

examine food and

health in its entire

supply chain—from

the production of

food and end user

consumption to

logistical requirements

and environmental

impact.

As a complement to the degree programs

and short training courses offered

by the different partner schools, the

Institute seeks to open opportunity for

industry engagement through research

partnerships, food quality testing, teaching,

and contracted research.

The local La Salle institutions will contribute

their respective strengths in agricultural

sciences, agronomy, biology, business,

chemistry, culinary arts, economics,

engineering, entrepreneurship, food

processing, food technology, hotel and

restaurant management, IT, industrial

design, medical research, nutrition,

nutritional health, and veterinary medicine.

New technologies in mechanical and aerospace engineering

Energy Summit for the Youth

Sen. Magsaysay on campus

NEW AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN THE VARIOUS AREAS OF MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

were tackled in the 3rd Regional

Conference in Mechanical and Aerospace

Technology held last March 4-5 at the

Traders Hotel, Manila.

The event, hosted by the DLSU ME

Department through the sponsorship of

AUN/SEED-Net, JICA, DLSU College of

Engineering, ASEAN Foundation, and the

Institut Teknologi Bandung, also presented

how such technologies are utilized in

the industry and appropriated to the

community to create high socio-economic

impact.

It likewise underscored the need to

synergize instruction, research, and

extension service in the field.

The event was graced by Hon. Sec.

Mario G. Montejo of DOST as Keynote

Speaker. Dr. Reynaldo Vea, president of

Mapua Institute of Technology, Dr. Kikuo

Kishimoto of Tokyo Institute of Technology,

Dr. Shinnosuke Obi of Keio University,

Dr. Bernard Ramirez of Philippine State

College of Aeronautics, and Dr. Alvin

Culaba, NRCP president and full professor

of DLSU were the plenary speakers.

A total of 54 papers were presented in

three parallel sessions by researchers

from Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos,

Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore,

Thailand, and Vietnam.

The organizing committee was headed by

DLSU ME Department Chairperson,

Dr. Alvin Y. Chua.

LAST MARCH 08, FORMER SENATOR RAMON MAGSAYSAY, JR. (ME ’61) gave a talk to Mechanical Engineering students

on how his Lasallian education helped him

in “Being an Engineer in Public Service and

Business Enterprise.” Author of RA 8495 or the

Mechanical Engineering Law, Magsaysay was

well received by junior and senior ME and IE

students and ME faculty.

The event, sponsored by the Mechanical

Engineering Society, was part of ME’s golden

jubilee in DLSU’s centennial year.

THE APPLIED CORPORATE MANAGEMENT (ACM) of De La

Salle University College of Business

commenced its 15th anniversary

celebration by gathering DLSU

administrators, industry partners, and

ACM alumni and students in a fun-filled

event at the Top Shelf, Global City on

March 19.

The ACM program was developed

by DLSU through the initiative of the

European Chamber of Commerce of

the Philippines in their desire to have

graduates who are able to integrate

themselves immediately into the

industry. The program incorporates

three trimesters of internship

sandwiched between academic terms.

Partnering with the top companies

in Metro Manila, the program has

produced over 400 graduates since its

inception.

A recent graduate tracer study shows

that ACM students are able to find

jobs quicker and are given better

opportunities in the workplace due to

their early industry exposure.

The event was sponsored by Citibank

NA, DMCI Homes Inc, De La Salle

Alumni Association, PGA Cars,

Sunlife Financial, Miladay Jewels, and

Intraceuticals.

TO RAISE AWARENESS ON THE CURRENT STATE OF THE COUNTRY’S ENERGY INDUSTRY, the DLSU

Physics Society (PHYSOC) spearheaded the first Energy Summit

for the Youth last March 30-April 2 at the Natividad Fajardo-Galang

Rosario Gonzalez Auditorium in DLSU.

Supporting the event were the Physics Department, the Center

for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research, the

Samahang Mag-aaral para sa Pagpapaunlad ng Pisika, the

College of Science, the Angelo King Institute, and the School of

Economics.

The activity provided a venue for the youth to interact with

the private and government sectors and to broaden their

understanding and interest in the field, towards the development

of a productive and environment-conscious energy sector.

Speakers from DLSU were Kevin Punzalan of the International

Studies Department and Dr. Raymond Tan, Dr. Bryan Gobaco, and

Dr. Jose Biona of the Engineering Department.

Pilipinas Shell, Inc., the DOST Philippine Council for Industry,

Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development,

and a select group of Congressmen co-sponsored the activity.

WITH THEIR INGENIOUS MARKETING IDEAS FOR PET CARE, DLSU marketing majors John

Agustin Uy, Maria Elena Alfonso, and Karen

Tracy Almarines impressed industry experts

from the Philippine Marketing Association

(PMA) and bagged three out of six of the

PMA-sponsored Agora Youth Awards this

year.

An annual nationwide search for excellent

marketing students, the Agora Youth

Awards challenges participants to come up

with creative marketing strategies to meet

a given objective. The challenge this year

is to boost the sales of a pet food brand

through marketing.

Six students emerged as winners out of

the 33 that were selected to participate.

DLSU’s Uy was chosen as batch

valedictorian for an elegant campaign

that makes use of the concept “pet

humanization.”

“I saw that Filipino pet owners treat their

pets as their own children and my idea was

to give the brand a family-oriented image,”

he explains.

He cites mentor and marketing

management faculty Benison Cu for

encouraging him to think out-of-the-box.

Brandstorm 2011 ChampionTEAM EXTREME FROM DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY, composed of Pixie Eraña, Elise Veloso and

John Austin Uy, emerged as champion in the L’Oréal Brandstorm

Competition Philippine National Finals last March 17.

The team, under the guidance of Marketing Department faculty

member Anlex Basilio, won an all-expense-paid trip to Paris,

where they will compete against teams from 41 countries.

L’Oréal’s annual competition invites college students in their final

two years to act as marketing brand manager for an existing

company brand, and create a new product line and overall

communications campaign for it.

This year’s

chosen brand

was L’Oréal

Professionel Homme, a

range of hair care and styling

products designed to meet the

specific needs of men’s hair.

Team Extreme’s winning

entry was a salon service

called Neoxea, a universal

solution for shaving. The team

also won the award for best

communications campaign.
