Movers and shakers...This year’s Electrical Times Top 50 researchshows that massive growth in profit isachievable, despite news reports this yearthat the industry has faced shrinking profitmargins and ‘challenging market conditions’.

The top 3 contractors, EMCOR, NGBailey and Skanska Rashleigh & Weatherfoil,have all maintained their positions since thelast Top 50 research, but one company thathas made significant advances this year isEDF – reporting an increase in profits of354.78% and a growth in turnover of149.33%.

This exceptional performance has pushedthe company up the rankings from number22 to just outside the top 10. It is definately acompany to watch for the 2006 Top 50report. It will be interesting to see if EDF canmaintain this level of performance over thecoming months.

T Clarke has crept back into the Top 10after falling back to 11th place last year. Thecompany has experienced a sharp upturn inactivity within its core business sectors andexpects improved performance in thesecond half of 2006 and in 2007.

The board issued a statement earlier thisyear that the group’s order book is currentlyaround £160m and consists of “a better ‘mixand quality’ of work than experienced in2005.” We will see if the company’soptimism is well founded in the next Top 50.

Southern Electric Contracting (SEC) hasimproved its ranking, this year, knockingHaden Young off its slot at number 4. SEChas grown from a loss-making electricalbusiness, in 1992, to becoming the mostprofitable contractor in this year’s Top 20profit rankings. The company has quite a

success story to tell, delivering year-on-yearimprovements in turnover and profit.

NG Bailey has also risen up the profit rankingsfrom being the 6th most profitable company to the2nd, by more than doubling its profits. The progressachieved by the companies that participated in thissurvey shows that the electrical industry continues tobe a dynamic market. The sector is currently seeinga boost from Government spending on theeducation, health and housing and this year ispredicted to show signs of positive growth. It will beinteresting to see which companies are mostsuccessful at exploiting this opportunity, over the

In the last Top 50 coverage, SkanskaRashleigh & Weatherfoil’s return onshareholder funds topped 118.10%. Adramatic increase is reported by thecompany for its latest trading year –topping 158.97%. But by far the mostimpressive return for this trading yearis shown by Parkersell reporting astaggering 388.43%.

EDF Energy leads this section, withgrowth of 354.78%, putting it headand shoulders above the rest in thiscategory.

NG Bailey’s huge growth of132.86%, reported in the last Top 50,shows some signs of slowing for thelatest financial year, at 56.25%, alongwith David Webster (down from100.72% to 51.61%) although bothcontinue to show impressive year-on-year profit growth.

These 17 companies are makinghuge strides at a time when 62% ofelectrical contractors are reportingshrinking profit margins. (Plimsoll)

EDF Energy Contracting notched up an impressive149.33% growth in turnover. No other company in therankings came close to this performance. Thecompany’s fortunes have been boosted by majorprojects such as a 30-year PFI deal with the LondonBorough of Islington for the provision of street lightingservices and a joint venture with Balfour Beatty Rail,providing upgrades to the rail electrificationinfrastructure in the south.

Parkersell topped the last Top 50return on sales ranking with areturn of 9.75%. For thecompany’s latest financial year,return on sales was 8.54%. FarleyElectrical has taken the numberone position, bringing Parkersell inat number two, while Wessex hasmade a jump from 9th place, inthe last Top 50, to number 3.

Others moving up in the top 10sales rankings, are: David Webster(from 17th to 6th position) HadenYoung (from 11th to 9th position);Wingate Electrical (from 10th to8th).

Some of those dropping out ofthe Top 10 return on sales are FES(from 8th to 15th); T Clarke (from7th to 12th); Murphy (from 6th to14th).

The Top 50 survey is aimed at electricalcontractors but inevitably with all the multi-disciplinary firms it is increasingly difficult toseparate their electrical and combinedturnovers or profits. The operational reviewtable therefore aims to establish the sectors thatconstitute each firm’s business with anapproximate breakdown of its electrical,mechanical and IT work.

In the last Top 50, Southern ElectricContracting ranked number one in thiscategory. The company has retained itsleading position in the Top 20 profitrankings, whilst making strides in theoverall Top 50 ranking – rising fromnumber 7 to number 4.

RTT Engineering Services has made the biggest leap, albeitfrom a position of 45th to 26th. Overall, there were greatershifts in ranking compared to last year. In the previous Top50, companies generally moved one or two notches up theranking. This year, there was greater movement – mostnotably from EDF Energy Contracting, Wingate, FarebrotherGroup and Valletric Electrical. Each moved up the table by tenrankings.
