    QUARTERLY REPORT

TOP 50 OF THE GENERAL PERFORMANCE RANKING© (GPI Ranking©)

    2019 SEASON: APRIL – MAY - JUNE

General Performance Index©(GPI: General Performance Index): "It is an in-dex that measures the performance that a ten-nis player has had in a given period of time." This index, not shown here, is used to make the "General Performance Ranking© or GPI Ranking©".

In this report, we have the second quarterly data of the 2019 season corresponding to the performance of the 50 best players according to the GPI Ranking©. In this period, the po-dium is made up of Rafael Nadal (ESP), Matteo Barrettini (ITA) and Stefanos Tsitsi-pas (GRE), in positions 1, 2 and 3 respectively of the General Performance Ranking© (table 1).

The following tournaments, which correspond to the second quarterly (April, May and June), have been included for the determination of the Top 50 of the General Performance Ranking©. The tournaments have been devel-oped on all surfaces, hard, clay and grass (Wimbledon not included here). Although, most tournaments were developed on clay and grass. Hard tournaments, considered in

The ATP Ranking that has been taken for this report is on July 1st, 2019.

Other players featured in the Top 10 of the GPI Ranking© are Taylor Fritz (USA), Alex-ander Zverev (GER), Jan-Lennard Struff (GER), Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA), Chris-tian Garin (CHI), Benoit Paire (FRA) and No-vak Djokovic (SRB). For the rest of the Top 50 see table 1.

At a first glance, we observe in table 1 that within the Top 10 of the GPI Ranking© there are only 4 players belonging to the Top 10 of the ATP Ranking and there are 39 Top 50 of the ATP Ranking within the Top 50 of GPI Ranking©. The only player with an ATP Rank-ing greater than 100 who has been able to sneak into the Top 50 of the GPI Ranking©, is the Japanese Taro Daniel (109). This gives the idea of how difficult the competition in this individualistic sport.

Another way to see the data is in Table 2, where has been taken the Top 50 of the ATP Ranking with its corresponding GPI Rank-ing©. Regard the Top 50 of the ATP Ranking, the only player with a GPI Ranking© greater than 100 has been the South African Kevin Anderson (129) who, due to his injuries, did not get a good performance in this second quarterly of the 2019 season.

Table 1 is headed by the living legend, Rafael Nadal, a player of unique physical and mental

characteristics, whose performance on clay courts has brought the records to the strato-sphere. His great performance in the second quarter of the season has allowed him to be the best player in the world. Nadal has been escorted by Italian Matteo Berrettini and the young Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Berrettini has made merit to occupy the second place in the GPI Ranking© of the second quarterly, his outstanding results have been: champion at the Hungarian Open, champion at the Mer-cedes Cup, runner-up at the BMW Open and Semifinalist at the Noventi Open. Regarding Stefanos Tsitsipas, he was champion at the Millennium Estoril Open, runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open, fourth round at Roland Garros and quarterfinals at the Fever-Tree Championships, among his most outstanding results of this second quarterly. On the other hand, Rafael Nadal won his 12th crown at Ro-land Garros, champion of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, semifinals at the Mutua Madrid Open, Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

In general, one places greater emphasis on the podium, but the other players have posi-tively highlighted their performance. If they are listed in table 1, it means that they belong to the Top 50 with the best performance in the planet during the period under analysis. That is to say, these players have made a great ef-fort to stand out and go as far as possible in tournaments. Of course, there is a Top 100, Top 150, Top 200, but in this case, we have limited only to the Top 50. The annual report is from the Top 150, we will see if we can ex-tend it to the Top 200.

Next, the tables are presented where they ap-pear the performance in the different aspects, services, returns, break points, etc. of this quarterly. Starting with table 1, which synthe-sizes all aspects of the following tables and presents the Top 50 of the GPI Ranking©.

Table 3 shows the relationship of effective-ness of the won matches with respect to the total number of played matches in the period under analysis.

It should not surprise us that the podium, of this table, is represented by the Big 3.

When the stuff is to win matches, if they play well, more or less or play badly it does not matter, Nole , Rafa and Roger are always present in prominent positions in this rela-tionship, even if their GPI Ranking© have not been the most prominent.

Rafael Nadal, in recent times, gives the im-pression of having applied greater speed to his services without diminishing his percent-age of successes, both in the first and in the second service. I have not analyzed his his-torical speed series to determine if there re-ally exists an increase in speed, at another time I can do it, but in the here and now, Nadal is the player with the best aim, at least

this second quarterly. We will see if Rafa re-mains at the top of first service percentages when John Isner (for me the best server of the moment) comes into action in the season prior to the US Open. Only the percentage of first services is analyzed here. Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas also stand out in this area.

In table 2, it can be seen that the first five players in the GPI Ranking© of the percent-age of the 2nd services are over Christian Garin, who obtained an average 95.2% and occupies the 8th performance ranking in this category. This happens because, the last player (Garin) played fewer games, that is, had an average of 95.2% in 20 matches,

while, for example, Matteo Berrettini, ob-tained 92.7% but in 25 matches, therefore, Berrettini is better positioned in the GPI Ranking© of the 2nd serve in. Similar com-mentary deserves, Borna Coric (95.4%), Novak Djokovic (92.7%), Roberto Bautista Agut (94.4%) with GPI Ranking© of the 2nd serve in: 12, 15 and 24, respectively.

In this table 7, Rafael Nadal regains the leadership in the GPI Ranking© of won points with the 2nd service. Nadal's second services are always complicated for rivals, they have a high dose of effect and precise placement, favored by his left-handed condi-

tion. It can be seen that Rafael Nadal ob-tained 60.7% of points won with his 2nd ser-vice, which is higher than the rest of the members of table 7, only Roger Federer is a little closer, but the last one obtained an av-erage of 59.6% in 16 matches, while Rafael Nadal obtained 60.7% in 24 matches, no comments.

We see in this table 8, that Nadal despite not having an extremely fast serve allows him to get out of compromised situations success-fully. I comment on this topic about Rafael Nadal because he is the one to whom I know most for the number of years I've been

watching him. Matteo Berrettini leads this table and, as in most cases, those who have a good serve, a high percentage of first and second services, generally have a high per-centage of break points saved.

This table 9 is directly related to tables 10 and 11. We can see that this table is led by Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini, who in turn are also the protagonists in the Tables 10 and 11, of percentages of won points with the returns of the 1st and 2nd services.

In my opinion Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, are the best returners nowadays. Djokovic does not occupy a prominent place in this report because he played relatively few matches with regard the Top 10 of the GPI Ranking©.
