How are big industries being
disrupted so easily?
Is it just bad, short-sighted
management, or is there
something more
fundamental
at work?
The Battle of Trafalgar
1805 ~ 210 years ago
Lord Nelson: 27 ships
Napoleon: 33 ships
Lord Nelson: 17,000 men
Napoleon: 30,000 men
British
casualties:
1,500+
Franco-Spanish
casualties:
16,000+
Lord Nelson won the Battle
of Trafalgar by blindsiding
Napoleon’s navy
By hitting a much larger
force at right angles
and at speed
In the industrial revolution
growth came from
vertical industries
In the technological revolution
growth is coming from
horizontal technologies
Just as Lord Nelson hit
Napoleon’s navy at right angles,
today’s top technologies
are hitting yesterday’s
top industries at
right angles

“We sold PayPal to eBay for $1.5
billion in 2002.
Since then, Elon Musk has founded
SpaceX and co-founded Tesla
Motors; Reid Hoffman co-founded
LinkedIn; Steve Chen, Chad Hurley,
and Jawed Karim together founded
YouTube; Jeremy Stoppelman and
Russel Simmons founded Yelp;
David Sacks co-founded Yammer;
and I co-founded Palantir.
Today all seven of those companies
are worth more than $1 billion
each.” - Peter Thiel

Of the 511 companies that had passed through
YC prior to its most recent Summer 2013 class,
306 had valuations tied to them. The total value
of those companies is now $13.7 billion, up $2
billion since Graham’s last update on the
number in June.
A number of YC companies have also raised
additional rounds of funding in the past several
months. Twitch (formerly Justin.tv) raised $20
million, E La Carte raised $13.5 million, Clustrix
raised $10 million, and Instacart brought on $8.5
million, among others.
