In 1984, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) first published a listing ofthe Top 200 Chief Executive Officers of Major Employers in the District of Columbia.Since then, the directory has served as an invaluable tool to business planners,administrators, and other parties interested in gaining access to the District’s leadingemployers.

The 2009 directory, Top 200 Chief Executive Officers of Major Employers in theDistrict of Columbia, continues to ensure that contact information of local businessesis readily available to those who need it. The directory represents a variety of localindustries such as social services, department stores, restaurants, hotels, educationalinstitutions, construction firms, financial institutions, and membership organizations.The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used to classify theindustries. The names of CEOs and human resource directors, as well as contactinformation, are included and employers are ranked by the size of their workforce.

This snapshot of the District of Columbia’s job market represents the industries thathelp ensure the District’s economic prosperity.

In September 2009, the top 200 firms accounted for 35% of the total privateemployment in the District of Columbia. Of the 200 employers listed, educationalinstitutions are the largest group with approximately 27,100 workers or 18%. Thesecond largest group is hospitals with approximately 24,200 workers or 16%.Law firms follow with 11,200 workers; hotels with 9,400; and food service estab-lishments with 6,300 workers.

Of the 200 firms, the Washington, DC, individual ward locations break down asfollows:
