SUBJECT: Converting Transmissions to 9823 OFS

NOTE: J23556 Support Legs consists of a Center Support Leg and two (2) Side Support Legs and isdesigned to support the S9820 transmission. During the conversion process from a S9820 transmission toa 9823 OFS transmission, the two (2) Side Support Legs must be removed and replaced with the two (2)Tilt Legs included with J235569823. The two (2) Tilt Legs are 1 inch longer to account for the relocatedmounting bolt holes in the new Rear Cover Assembly.

Introduction:With the production availability of the 9823 OFS transmission, Allison Transmission has released a kit for thosecustomers that seek to convert their S9820 to the 9823 OFS. This SIL describes some of the features of the 9823OFS transmissions. Refer to Cross Section – 9823 OFS Figure 8.

A Conversion and Overhaul Kit has been developed to help ensure all necessary parts are available to converta S9820 transmission into a 9823 OFS transmission. This kit P/N 29557365 is detailed in Table 2 and Table 3.Former kit P/N 29556134 will be available for ordering until September 1, 2015.

NOTE: The Conversion and Overhaul Kit P/N 29557365 can be ordered from Allison Transmission,Inc. beginning July 27, 2015.

Special Requirements for Installation of 9823 OFS Transmission:

CAUTION: After the S9820 transmission has been converted to the 9823 OFS transmission, thetransmission length will increase by 0.94 inches. To accommodate the increased length of the 9823OFS transmission, overall driveline length adjustments MAY be performed to prevent equipment damage.Contact the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to obtain the approved method to adjust thedriveline length.

Special Requirements for Oil Field Fracturing Pump Installations:

CAUTION: Significant torsional vibrations can occur with some oil field fracturing installations that result inoperating conditions at or near system resonance conditions. These conditions may result in excessivetorsional amplitudes that are significantly above transmission torque ratings. Torsional amplitudes may bereduced by including torsional damping or isolation capability in the system. Therefore, a 4K centistokedriveline damper is required when installing a converted 9823 OFS.

NOTE: For a complete description of the damper requirement, contact your local Allison distributor ordealer to access the Allison Tech Data 9000 Series Application Manual Section 4.6.

NOTE: The conversion of a S9820 transmission to a 9823 OFS transmission constitutes a change ofVocation. Due to the change of Vocation, Allison Transmission, Inc. MUST be informed of the SerialNumbers of the converted transmissions. Complete the Vocation Model/Parts Change Form (locatedon last page of this SIL) and email it to [email protected]. Refer to Table 1 forthe Assembly CrossReference Numbers. The completed Vocation Model/Parts Change Form will beprocessed and will include a new serial number assigned to the converted transmission. The completedform, with the new serial number will be returned for data tag completion.

Splitter Planetary Carrier Assembly (item 22):A new Splitter Planetary Carrier Assembly has been released. The new Splitter Planetary Carrier AssemblyP/N 29555283 includes a newly designed Splitter Carrier P/N 29555266. Splitter Carrier P/N 29555266 hasreplaced Splitter Carrier P/N 29543958. The Splitter Planetary Carrier Assembly is included in Conversion andOverhaul Kit P/N 29557365 (refer to Table 2). The new Planet Pinion Bearing Assembly P/N 29557705, featuringeight (8) bearings, has replaced Planet Pinion Bearing Assembly P/N 29545371 that utilized four (4) bearings. Thenew Spindle Assembly P/N 29555269 has replaced P/N 23012849. The new Spindle P/N 29555268 replacesSpindle P/N 23012850. Refer to Figure 7.

Shaft Coupling and Splitter Input Shaft (items 1, 2, 15):Shaft Coupling P/N 29555256 replaces P/N 29544015. A new Splitter Input Shaft P/N 29555258 replacesSplitter Input Shaft P/N 29546741 (refer to Figure 1). The new Shaft Coupling requires the use of Hook TubeSealring P/N 23016657 (service kit P/N 23019794) that replaces Sealring P/N 23016656. Hook Tube SealringP/N 23016657 has an enlarged diameter.

Intermediate and Low Clutch Piston Housing Assembly Dowel Pins (item 24):The Intermediate and Low Clutch Piston Housing Assembly incorporates the use of a shorter dowel pin,P/N 29555440. The pressed depth from the front side remains the same at 0.500 inches. The backside depth isshorter by approximately 0.1 inches to allow for clearance in using the new rear cover assembly with the relocatedmounting holes (refer to Figure 2). Use driver tool to install new dowel pins (refer to Figure 4).

NOTE: Driver tool is not available from Bosch Automotive Service Solutions and must be fabricated.

Rear Cover Assembly (item 4, 5):New Rear Cover Assembly P/N 29555348 replaces P/N 29537437. The six (6) mounting bolt holes in the newRear Cover Assembly have been relocated to allow the same physical mounting configuration as the S9820transmission. The relocation of the mounting bolt holes is due to the new Housing Assembly P/N 29555976 being0.94 inches longer than the previous Housing Assembly P/N 29551689. Refer to Figure 5.

Splitter Ring Gear Hub (item 6, 7, 8, 10):New Splitter Ring Gear Hub P/N 29555270 replaces P/N 29545541. The new Splitter Ring Gear Hub requiresthe use of Backing Ring P/N 29545661 (refer to Figure 6), ORing P/N 29507437 (refer to Figure 6), Ball BearingAssembly P/N 29555271, Bearing Retainer P/N 29555272 and Oil Transfer Hub P/N 29555275. New Oil TransferHub P/N 29555275 replaces Oil Transfer Hub P/N 29553388. New Ball Bearing Assembly P/N 29555271replaces Ball Bearing Assembly P/N 29547613. New Bearing Retainer P/N 29555272 replaces Bearing RetainerP/N 29545540.

Assembly Instructions:Refer to Figure 6. The Intermediate Clutch Hub Assembly P/N 6884846 and Bearing P/N 23049160 mustbe installed onto the Splitter Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29543459. Then install the High Range Clutch DrumAssembly P/N 29547622 with Piston Assembly P/N 23045566, Spring P/N 6756042, Sealrings P/N 23016679and Snapring P/N 6756041 onto the shaft. The new Oil Transfer Hub P/N 29555275, Ball Bearing AssemblyP/N 29555271, Bearing Retainer P/N 29555272 and Splitter Ring Gear Hub P/N 29555270 must be installed intothe new Housing Assembly P/N 29555976. The shaft must be inserted from the rear of the housing through theSplitter Ring Gear Hub. The Backing Ring P/N 29545661, ORing P/N 29507437 and Snapring P/N 6750259 arethen installed from the front of the housing to retain the Splitter Output Shaft. Additional information is available inthe current SM7449EN service manual.
