Government workers at the Deseret Chemical Depot (DCD) have reached and surpassed one million safe man-hours. This achieve-ment is a first for the government workforce at DCD and, according

to the Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) Risk Management Office, is also the highest string of safe man-hours among CMA’s remaining chemical weapons storage sites. The current string of safe hours began in September of 2009.

“This is a reflection of our worker’s commitment to maintaining a safe

work environment,” said Col. Mark Pomeroy, DCD Commander. “When our employees work safely, it means that we are keeping the community and environment safe as well,” he added.

The DCD safety office utilizes a number of tools to engage the workforce and continue building a strong safety culture. A traveling safety award is used to recognize employees and provides a competitive incentive to main-tain a safe workplace. Through the Empowering People to Improve Safety (EPIS) and Near Miss reporting programs, the safety office actively seeks and rewards workers for their suggestions and observations of possible safety issues. In addition, weekly safety messages raise workforce awareness of various safety topics—information they can use on the job or at home.

“I’d like to recognize the Safety Office for their oversight role in the

implementation of several safety programs and to the employees of Deseret Chemical Depot for their collaborative efforts in using and promoting the EPIS and Near Miss programs in achieving this milestone,” said Tom Salz-man, DCD Installation Safety Officer.

Another strong aspect of DCD’s safety culture is their rolling recordable

injury rate (RIR), which is calculated as a 12-month average. The Occu-

pational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) describes a record-able injury as one that requires medical attention, ranging from stitches to broken bones and other serious injuries. DCD currently holds an RIR of 0.9. According to OSHA, that’s comparable to working in the finance and insurance industries.

“Considering the challenging hazards associated with the chemical weap-

ons and the heavy industrial-type work that is performed by depot workers, this is a remarkable achievement,” Col. Pomeroy noted.

New Education and Training Facility Receives Legislative Funding

Great news for Tooele residents and businesses. During the waning hours of the 2011 General Session of the Utah Legislature, legislation was passed authorizing five building projects in the state. House Bill 4, titled General Obligated Bonds Authorizations includes funding for the construction of a much needed and long awaited Tooele Applied Technology College (TATC). The facility will be shared with the Utah State University – Tooele Regional Campus to enhance training and education opportunities available for Tooele County citizens.

This welcomed news is being celebrated by education, business and government leaders throughout the county. TATC Campus President Scott Snelson stated that “This accomplishment is an indication of the hard work and cooperation of many individu-als and organizations throughout Tooele County.” President Snelson continued, “Legislative funding was made possible due to the generous partnership with USU land holdings and the commitment of resources from Tooele City. Tooele City Mayor Patrick Dunlavy and USU – Tooele Regional Campus Dean and Executive Director Dr. Gary Straquadine were instrumental in bringing this project to Tooele.”

According to Dr. Edward Dalton, Chairman of the Tooele County Alliance for Education, Employment and Economic Devel-opment, “This project comes at a most opportune moment in the development of the TATC and USU-Tooele Regional Campus. Private donors, industry, the State of Utah, local government, the community of Tooele, and educators have come together to bring rapid development to the education and training offerings in Tooele.”

Construction of this new 67,000 square foot facility will begin in the fall of 2011 and will be located on eight acres of USU prop-erty immediately west of the newly developed Tooele County School District Community Learning Center and will serve as the gateway building for the envisioned Tooele County Education and Training Corridor. USU – Tooele Regional Campus Dean and Executive Director stated, “The TATC/USU Tooele building will add a distinguished function in an educational corridor master plan. It will become an essential part of a campus environment that includes USU’s current West Vine Street building, the Com-munity Learning Center, and 54 acres of USU property in the same tract of land. This project is great for the Tooele Community.”

The project will make numerous new education and training opportunities available for high school students and adult learners throughout the county. New opportunities include allied health, nursing, applied economics, construction technology, diesel tech-nician, natural resource management, farm management, warehousing/material handling, and professional truck driving.

Snelson states, “Achieving this project is a remarkable accomplishment for all stakeholders and a shared victory for the citizens and businesses of Tooele. Representatives Ronda Menlove and Doug Sagers, Senators Pete Knudson and Daniel Thatcher, former Representative Jim Gowans, and many others are commended for their efforts in obtaining the first state-funded Higher Education facility for Tooele.”

Established in July of 2009, TATC is one of eight Utah College of Applied Technology campuses located across the state to provide technical training that meet the needs of local businesses and support economic development efforts. “TATC continues to enjoy outstanding support from its Board of Directors, Tooele City, Tooele County, Tooele County School District, Utah State University, Tooele County Chamber of Commerce, Department of Workforce Services, and many business, industry, government, and community leaders – thanks!” said Pres. Snelson.

In Southern California, the legend goes that spring starts when the swallows return to the mission

in San Juan Capistrano. In Tooele County, one could rightly make the case that spring starts when the racing engines crank up at Miller Motorsports Park.

The state-of-the-art racing facility,

located at 2901 N. Sheep Lane, will offer an unparalleled variety of rac-ing activities during the 2011 season. As the track enters its sixth year of operation there will be something for everyone, ranging from road racing automobiles and motorcycles to off-road racing and karting.

“We think the 2011 season is going

to be our most successful yet,” said John Larson, General Manager of Miller Motorsports Park. “We had a very strong response to our off-road events last year. As a result we have added more off-road events to our calendar. Those, combined with our road racing events for cars, motorcycles and karts, plus some other fun, non-motorized events, are going to make it a great year for fans of almost every type of motorsport you can think of. We can’t wait to get started.”

The first big event of the season

will be the Larry H. Miller Dealer-ships Utah Grand Prix, headlined by the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, over the weekend of April 30 – May 1. Supporting events include the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championship, the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Champion-ship, the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Yokohama and the Pirelli Cup USA.

One month later, over the week-

end of May 28-30, will be Miller Motorsports Park’s biggest event of the year. The BigM Weekend, named to reflect the mixture of motor-cycles, music and military at Miller Motorsports Park on Memorial Day weekend, will feature the USA Round of the FIM Superbike World Championship. Once again, this will be the only appearance in the Western Hemisphere of the world’s third-biggest racing organization, making its fourth appearance in Utah. Supporting events will include AMA Pro Road Racing’s National Guard Superbike Championship, the Daytona SportBike Championship, the Vance & Hines XR1200 Cham-pionship and the Larry H. Miller AMA SuperSport Challenge. As was the case in 2010, the weekend will include a rock concert at the track on

Saturday night, with feature races be-ing held on Memorial Day Monday, May 30.

The incredible rock-crawling

machines of the World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship (WE ROCK) will again make two visits to Miller Motorsports Park in 2011. The first visit, over the weekend of June 11-12, will be a round of the series’ Western Region championship. The second visit, over the weekend of October 1-2, will be the Grand Na-tional Championship event, bringing together the top competitors from the Eastern and Western regions.

Making a return appearance to

Miller Motorsports Park over the weekend of June 24-26 will be the Lucas Oil Offroad Racing Series, which was a phenomenal success in its Utah debut last year. Rather than use the infield of the road racing track as in 2010, Miller Motorsports Park is building a dedicated off-road course for the Lucas Offroad trucks and buggies that will also be used for other off-road events. Joining the weekend will be the third annual CruiserFest, a gathering for Toyota Land Cruiser enthusiasts.

A unique new event will take place

over the weekend of July 15-16, as the Ultra4 American Rock Sports Challenge off-road group comes to Utah for the first time. This unusual competition combines rock-crawling with high-speed off-road racing, and will utilize both MMP’s existing rock-crawling course and the new off-road racing course.

Motorcycle enthusiasts will return

to Miller Motorsports Park over Labor Day weekend, September 3-4, for the sixth annual BikeFest, featur-ing the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. The vin-tage motorcycle races and concours d’elegance have become a must-do event for motorcycle fans in the In-termountain West.

In addition to the major events,

there will also be an entertaining mix of mid-level events at Miller Motorsports Park during 2011. These include WERA Motorcycle Road Racing, June 18-19; the Rotax Grand Nationals, one of America’s most prestigious karting events, July 21-23; The SCCA Utah Region’s “Great Salt Race,” August 6-7; Redline Time Attack, August 27-28; and the Intermountain Region of the Porsche Club of America, September 23-25.

For those who like their racing

without engines, the weekend of Au-gust 12-13 will bring two very differ-ent events. The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah bicycle event will visit the track for the third consecutive year on August 12, serving as the third stage of the five-stage event that runs from August 9-14. The MMP stage will be an individual time trial event in which riders are released one at a time to set the fastest possible time around a 9.2-mile lap that includes all of the 4.5-mile racetrack as well as the paved ring road that surrounds the track. Many of the top riders from throughout North America will contest the event, which was won last year by internationally renowned American rider Levi Leipheimer.

The following day, on August 13,

Miller Motorsports Park will host Mud Run MS, a 10K (6.2-mile) foot race through approximately 30 military-style obstacles made of or surrounded by mud. Teams of five compete in the co-ed, all-male or all-female divisions. Participants can also enter as an individual or team of two. Mud Run MS is not a relay. Each member of a team must complete the entire race, and the entire team must complete the race within 15 seconds of each other to qualify for competi-tion. The fastest-growing adventure race in the country, Mud Run MS has partnered with the National MS Society to create a unique fundrais-ing event for MS in Utah. As some adventure races have a limited audi-ence due to the extreme fitness level involved, Mud Run MS provides an opportunity for people of all skill levels to join in the muddy fun!

Miller Motorsports Park’s local

amateur racing championships will continue in force in 2011. The Miller Park Racing Association for auto-mobiles will contest a seven-round championship in 2011, plus two non-points endurance races. The Masters of the Mountains Championship for motorcycles will also contest a seven-round championship. MMP’s ever-growing road-racing kart program has combined two championships into one, 15-round Utah Kart Cham-pionship Series, and the Speedway Karts and Quarter-Midgets cham-pionship, new in 2010, expands to a 10-round series to be held on the MMP Kart Center’s oval track.

Miller Motorsports Park will also

continue to offer non-competitive track time to enthusiasts in 2011, with five rounds of the popular Wide-Open Wednesday program scheduled plus 19 Open Track Days for automobiles and seven Open Track Days for motorcycles.

The newest attraction at Miller

Motorsports Park provides fans with

yet another way to satisfy their need for speed with the installation of a new Zip Line. At 194 feet in height, the MMP Zip Line is the tallest structure in Tooele County. It is the first electro-magnetic commercial Zip Line constructed in the State of Utah. Unlike traditional, gravity-driven Zip Lines, the MMP Zip Line pulls riders in two two-seat cars up 150 feet to the tower launch point,

then releases the riders to ride at a controlled speed to the landing plat-form approximately 700 feet away. One car will travel at approximately 40 mph, and the other will travel at approximately 20 mph.

TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (March 9, 2011) — A race of an entirely different sort will take place at Miller Motorsports Park on August 13, 2011, as Mud Run MS comes to Utah’s state-of-the-art motor-sports facility.

Mud Run MS is a 10K (6.2-mile) foot

race through approximately 30 military-style obstacles made of or surrounded by

mud. Teams of five compete in the co-ed, all-male or all-female divisions. Partici-pants can also enter as an individual or team of two. Mud Run MS is not a relay. Each member of a team must complete the entire race, and the entire team must complete the race within 15 seconds of each other to qualify for competition.

Mud Run MS is the fastest-growing

adventure race in the country. The National MS Society and Mud Run have partnered to create a unique fundraising event for MS in Utah. As some adventure races have a limited audience due to the extreme fitness level involved, Mud Run MS provides an opportunity for people of all skill levels to join in the muddy fun!

“We are always interested in new and

fun events to host at our great facility,” said John Larson, General Manager of Miller Motorsports Park. “The Mud Run MS provides us with an opportunity to present a new form of competition that will be fun for all participants and benefit a great cause at the same time.”

“The 2011 Mud Run MS is a challenge

unlike any other; so too is living with multiple sclerosis,” said Becky Woolley, Vice President of Community Devel-opment for the National MS Society, Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter. “We are glad to partner with Miller Motorsports Park to engage more people in a new and entertaining way to lend their support helping us to spread awareness about the disease and how the MS Society can help someone living with this disease.”

Mud Run MS participants pay a $50

registration fee and commit to fund-raising $100 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. One-hundred percent of fundraising dollars benefit the Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter of the National MS Society. Funds raised by Mud Run MS are used to support local programs and services for people affected by MS as well as fund research for treatment, prevention and a cure for MS.

Experts are calling it the fifth big-gest earthquake since 1900. The March 11th earthquake that hit

Japan’s main island of Honshu mea-sured magnitude 9.0 on the Richter scale. The resulting tsunami wiped out Sendai, Japan leaving death and destruction in the wake of the 30 foot high wall of water. Thousands are dead and thousands more are still missing.

It seems like these natural disasters, especially earthquakes, are occurring with more frequency all over the world. Whether that’s really true or not, I don’t know. But I do know that when it comes to a major earthquake hitting our state, scientists say it’s not a matter of “if,” but “when.”

Of course, after the Japanese quake everyone is talking about the terrible disaster. Many people are taking notice and starting, or continuing, to get pre-pared. Commissioner Colleen Johnson said, “People tend to forget about pre-paredness until the next disaster hits. Emergency preparedness is certainly on people’s minds now.”

I hope it is on your mind now. The Tooele County Commissioners are con-cerned for the safety of our citizens and are urging everyone to takes steps to

become prepared for emergencies and disasters. Commissioner Jerry Hurst said, “Everybody ought to be prepared. Nobody expects these disasters to hap-

pen to them, but they do happen. We can’t be totally prepared for everything, but we need to do the best we can.”

So where do you begin? Emergency

Preparedness for any type of hazard begins with a Family Disaster Plan.

How can an optometrist make the most of business networks offered by the Chamber of Commerce and “come together” as the Chamber encourages us to do?

Tooele Vision Center is Tooele’s oldest eye care provider and was estab-lished in 1953. We have been a cornerstone in providing reliable solutions for the vision and eye health needs of our community for generations. Start-ing with Dr. John Gibbs, then Dr. Kris Hill and continuing with myself, we have consistently sought to work together with local businesses to strength-en one another.

Whenever we need a product or service to enhance our business we have consistently sought alliances with our local business “partners.” Where possible we have even traded or exchanged services to ensure a win/win relationship. For example when we needed help with our computers and network system we connected with Cory at Upgrades, Etcetera Computers who was in need of glasses to relieve his computer eye strain. The Chamber’s newest member Predator Sports, owner Gregor Dzierzon created and hosts our website (his other job is in computers and he is a Microsoft trainer) in exchange for help with his family eye care. For much of our printing needs, (business cards, labels, referral cards, etc.) we have relied on our partners at Jackrabbit Press and the UPS store. For years we have partnered with

Cold Stone Creamery with customized thank you/gift cards made to give to our patients who purchased designer glasses or referred friends to us. This mutual partnership benefits both of us by helping us show appreciation to our patients while sending Cold Stone customers they may not have other-wise had. Recently, we needed our carpets cleaned and Brandon with Green Clean was willing to not only clean our carpets for a great rate but then use his earnings to purchase a new pair of glasses from us; he has since done many more jobs for us. In a similar exchange with Ty Bateman he can now see better and we have improved our health at GetFitwithTy. It has been our pleasure to use Royal Wholesale Electric for new lights for the building, Ace Disposal for our Dumpster, Tye Hoffman at Edward Jones for our retirement planning, Mel Workman for our building and malpractice insurance, Tooele Valley Nursery for our new shrubs and plants in front of our building and many others in town who we purchase business supplies from. We have a mutually beneficial relationship with Energy Solutions, Detroit Diesel, ATI Rowley, US Mag and other large industrial Chamber members who we pro-vide safety glasses, magnaflux screenings and other eye care needs to help keep their workers safe.

These are just a few examples of how we have tried to work as “business partners” with each of you in the Chamber and there are many more we can’t list. I hope we are all on the lookout whenever we attend Chamber lunches, business after-hour events, or ribbon cuttings and asking “how can that business help me?” Or, even better “how can I help them and their busi-ness?” It is important ask, “What can we do together to benefit both busi-nesses.” This must be going through our minds as we work together to make each of our business flourish in this great community in which we all live.

Dr Jed Winder and Dr Kris Hill are located at 300 S. Main St. They are

full service vision and eye care providers and take most insurance. They can be contacted at 882-3233 or www.TooeleVision.com. Dr Winder is currently serving his 2nd term as a Board Member for the Chamber of Commerce.

Your plan should consist of knowing protective actions, designating an out-of-state telephone contact, identifying one family meeting place outside your home and one outside your neigh-borhood in case of evacuation, creating Disaster Supply Kits for each family member and your vehicles, keeping and rotating water and food storage in your home, keeping your gas tanks at least half full, and knowing emergency plans for your child’s school. Include special-needs neigh-bors and pets in your plans.

In the case of an earthquake, the first thing to know and remember is the protective action: “Drop, Cover, and Hold on.” Get under sturdy furniture and hold on until the shaking stops. While the duration of the Japanese earthquake

was unusually long, with shaking lasting three to five minutes, most quakes last less than a minute. You don’t have time to run around looking for cover. “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” wherever you are as soon as possible. If you’re outside, stay out-side, but away from power lines, trees, walls and fences. Don’t run out of, or into, a building. The biggest cause of death and injury in an earth-quake is falling objects.

This may sound callous but if you don’t know how to protect yourself during a natural disaster, it may not matter if you have any other emer-gency plans and supplies in place. Teach your family and friends to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” just as much as they know “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” Try to stay calm and don’t panic during disasters.

Commissioner Bruce Clegg has encouraged citizens to have water stored for emergencies since he first took office. He said, “We live in

the high desert and with droughts, power outages, and disasters, you never know when our fresh water supply might be threatened or inter-rupted. It’s important that everyone have food and water storage.” Com-missioner Johnson agreed, “I think everyone should have water stored in their homes. We can live without food longer than we can live without water.”

In April 2003, National Public Radio’s Howard Berkes called Tooele County one of the best prepared rural counties in the nation. And we’ve only improved since then. Tooele County Emergency Management (TCEM) can activate the Emergency Operations Center where officials coordinate, com-municate, and collaborate for emergen-cy response and resource needs. TCEM also maintains several warning systems including sirens, highway message boards, tone-alert radios, Emergency Alert System, route alerting, telephone calling trees, Twitter (twitter.com/tcem), and Facebook (facebook.com/tcem.org).

Unfortunately, many of the natu-ral hazards that could affect Tooele County such as an earthquake or tor-nado will provide little to no warning. When warning is available and during disasters, the warning systems will be utilized to provide emergency public information to help people during the response to, and recovery, from a disaster.

Because we don’t know when the next big earthquake will hit our area, we need to get prepared now. Emer-gency Management Director, Kari Sagers, said, “The best steps you can take to prepare are those you do before the disaster. When the disaster hits, the time to prepare has passed.”

There are no guarantees when it comes to surviving a disaster, but if you do all you can to prepare for the worst, then you can hope for the best.

Emergency Preparedness informa-tion is available in many forms at the TCEM Building at 15 East 100 South in Tooele. You can consult your 2011 Tooele County Emergency Prepared-ness Calendar. Information is also available electronically at www.tcem.org. Feel free to call (435) 833-8100 with emergency preparedness ques-tions. As always, send your comments to [email protected].

You know that publicity for your business can bring you new customers. You may also know that the Tooele Chamber is always looking for great

stories for its newsletter, but may not always have the staff available to write every story.

What you may not know is what to write about. You stand the best chance of having your article selected and read if you write short, interesting stories. Think about the topics that would catch your attention as a reader.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. When your business has a grand opening or open house

2. When you have a new product or service

3. When you’re celebrating an anniversary

4. When an employee receives an award

5. When you announce a partnership or joint marketing venture

6. When you’ve appeared on TV, the radio or a major newspaper

7. When you launch a new website

8. When you sponsor a sports team

9. When the sports team you sponsor does well

10. When you’re conducting a survey or seeking information

11. When you’re sponsoring a workshop or seminar

12. When you offer free consultations or a free ebook

13. When you have news about your industry, market trends or other information

14. When an employee participates in a well-known event

15. When an employee (or employees) are involved with a charity and the charity has news

16. When you’ve remodeled your business

17. When you’ve made an improvement to a product or service

18. When a customer sends you a letter of commendation

Of course, this list is not at all exhaustive – there are MANY things that businesses do that are interesting to the community. Some of these are once-in-a lifetime events, but many of them happen fairly frequently. If you take a few moments to consider the list, I’m sure you can think of at least one idea for a paragraph or two to send to the Chamber. Debbie Winn and her staff include as many of these news items as possible in each issue of the Newsletter and choose the most newsworthy and interesting to include.
