orward thinking, set forward, fashion-forward, pay it forward, looking forward… are all beautiful expressions that keep Tony Ward “moving forward” and give the team the momentum to create 7 whole new collections every year.
Backstage frenzy, effervescent creativity, mind-blowing techniques… FORWARD is the behind-the-scenes pass to the ever-changing fashion world. Shedding the light on the innovative approaches developed by the designer and his team, the new Tony Ward magazine illustrates how a historic couture house thrives to reinvent itself every season, to become one of the most fashion-forward designer brands.
FORWARD’s first issue is about the essence of Tony Ward Couture. It gathers the inspirations, never-seen-before images and snapshots of the brand’s milestones, collections and headquarters. It is also an invitation to the ateliers, revealing the savoir-faire of a house catering a circle of Couture connoisseurs and red carpet style icons.
While closing this issue, we just finished the Bridal 2015 look book, are preparing the Couture Fall winter 2014/15 fashion show and began working on the upcoming Ready-to-wear collections… This doesn’t stop us from brainstorming about the second issue of this magazine. It is definitely a breathtaking sprint, but this is why we are so passionate about it! Looking forward!

For Tony Ward, tailoring runs in the family. He grew up in the effervescent world of fashion, surrounded by the beautiful silks and the perfectly cut suits which made his father famous. At the age of 18, he enrolled in the most prestigious Fashion Design school in Paris, “L'École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne” and worked at the Lanvin House Ateliers to finance his education. He worked for seven years with Claude Montana and Dominique Morlotti at Lanvin, with Gianfranco Ferré at Christian Dior Couture then with Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé. Learning from the best designers the secrets of Haute Couture techniques up to the highest standards led him to outgrow himself and launch his own brand.
Aptly named "The Architect of Detail", he draws his inspiration from contemporary architecture, which helps him envision sculptural forms, create innovative techniques and play with the boundaries of light and transparency.
The ARCHITECT OF DETAIL
1952: Establishment of the Elie Ward Couture HouseIn 1952, Elie Ward opened a Couture house in the heart of Beirut. His suits, cocktail and evening dresses were well known by the Lebanese high society women. Distinguished for his refined taste and high-quality tailoring skills, the best dressed of the capital were seeking after his gowns for their special occasions. Thanks to the extraordinary quality of fabrics and craftsmanship, his designs are admired even to this day, where they represent valuable Collectors items.

In recognition of his talent, he was awarded the 1st prize at the “Société des Artistes et Décorateurs” (SAD) design competition, and his design was exposed at the Musée Galliera (The Fashion Museum of the city of Paris).
2004: First Fashion Show at the Italian Fashion WeekSelected by the Official Committee of the Italian Fashion Week, Tony Ward started presenting his Couture Fashion Shows in Rome. Since the first Collection entitled “Eden”, his utmost talent was quickly noticed by the Italian and International press, high society and celebrities. Only a year later, he was named Fashion Designer of the Year and awarded the “Ago D’Oro” (Golden Needle) prize in the Italian capital.
2007: Opening of an Exclusive Couture Showroom in MoscowTony Ward Couture Collections attracted international members of royal families, top celebrities and elegant women looking for uniqueness and refinement. The increasing demand for his creations led to the opening of a Couture showroom in Moscow. Russian VIPs, in search of exceptional gowns, immediately adopted the brand.
2008: Launching of the Ready-to-Wear LineThe brand translated its refined and elegant style into a Luxury Ready-to-wear line. The evening and cocktail gowns, ethereal and precious, are all entirely manufactured in the Couture Ateliers. These timeless and glamorous collections attract women in search of unique dresses for special occasions. The brand is now distributed in exclusive high-end Boutiques and Multi-brand Stores worldwide.
2011: Launching of the Bridal LineThe Designer, known for his unique Couture wedding gowns, enters the Ready-to-wear Bridal market with an exceptional selection of materials and a delicate choice of details. In his Atelier in Beirut, Tony Ward brings the dream of purest romance into reality. Located above the Flagship store, the Ateliers are where the magic happens. The Couture and Prêt-à-porter workshops employ experienced and passionate workers who bring to life 7 collections a year, from prototyping to production. The creative embroideries are also done at the heart of the Ward ateliers. This unique savoir-faire which is still kept by the house allows for developing mind-blowing embroideries made of pearls, Swarovski crystals, fabric petals, ribbons, silk thread and silicone.

aris is and has always been the world Fashion capital. It witnessed the birth of Haute Couture with the innovative designs & presentations of Charles Frederick Worth.
Paris inspired women to be independent and powerful thanks to Coco Chanel’s flapper look and the Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo suit. It is also today’s city of choice for international designers who come from Tokyo, Antwerp or Beirut to present their collections. Tony Ward studied and worked in Paris for 7 years before launching his own brand. He then built a solid reputation in Italy where he presented his collections for 10 years and decided in 2014 to return to the city of light. He chose the fascinating yet intimate setting of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild to host his Spring Summer Couture show. It was attended by Didier Grumbach, President of the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode.

Tony Ward’s Spring Summer 2014 Couture collection is inspired by Architectural structures and origami flowers imagined in full bloom, reinterpreted through cuts, shapes and volumes. A romantic vision combined with modern structures translated through a playful approach to colour, fabric and lines. The striking silhouettes are created with faultless precision and workmanship, prominently shown in hundreds of visible cuts. Floral and geometrical shapes, both irregular and fragmented, hold a dominant place in this collection defined by countless three-dimensional elements.

Tony Ward is known for his restless attention to detail, which is what Couture is all about. Each collection is a new occasion to create innovative materials and techniques, and develop unique cuts and shapes that make each garment impossible to imitate.
This dress took 2 weeks to draw on paper, 30 hours to carefully cut the needed 700 geometric shapes made of 3 layers to obtain the 3D look of a dissolved origami & 72 hours of very precise, handmade sewing.

The Ward Ateliers are famous for their high-quality, creative tailleurs. Elie Ward, his father, built a solid reputation in producing long lasting garments while mastering the art of cutting and sewing suits.
The best tailleurs from the latest Couture collections are still handmade by Elie Ward and cater to the connoisseurs who appreciate the complexity and savoir-faire behind structured outfits.

You cannot predict what fashion would look in the future. It is changing from season to season. We often went back in time and revisited past trends. What I can say is that innovation will definitely be determined by new materials and fabrics being created.

FASHION FOR A CAUSEThe Whitney Houston dress designed by Tony Ward is made of the finest Silk Muslin, encrusted with curves of Swarovski crystals in shaded tones and handmade origami flowers. It took 130 hours of handwork to create. Whitney Houston wished her dress to be sold to the benefit of a non-profit social organization. Following her sudden death, Tony Ward honored her wish and offered the dress to an organization for Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation. They will auction the dress to the benefit of the NGO.

The Venezuelan beauty wore a record of three outfits during theTony Ward Fashion Show that took place two weeks before the elections in Moscow where she was crowned Miss Universe 2013. She granted an unreleased exclusive interview for FORWARD Magazine, where we had the immense privilege of discovering her strength of character and undeniable inner beauty.
Q: You were in the modeling world since a young age, was the experience with Tony Ward any different?A: I was modeling in Venezuela since I was 14, and one of my dreams was to be part of an international runway show. The opportunity to model for an international designer such as Tony Ward and to wear his amazing dresses was a dream come true! Q: What is it like living in New York, one of the world capitals of Fashion? A: Living in New York was another dream come true! I had the chance to attend the NY fashion week and to encourage both American and Venezuelan designers. The people you meet in the streets of New York have a unique style, they teach you a lot about fashion.
Q: Is the Miss Universe year as glamorous as people imagine?A: It is very glamorous to attend galas and VIP events where you have to dress up and look your best. Thankfully I have a fantastic team of "magicians" who do an amazing job everytime to make me look this good. Every public appearance requires lots of efforts to get everything ready. Apart from that I am a normal girl and I have the normal life of other girls my age!
Q: What goals and challenges do you have as Miss Universe, what do you want to achieve?A: I’ve been working on promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and encouraging more women and girls to get tested, to reach an HIV-free generation. I have the immense privilege of being a role model for women so I try to put my notoriety to good use.

a Sweet Scent...Tony Ward draws his inspirationfrom a dream world where theMAGIC SCENTS of flowers prevail
The heart note lies in the cutting and molding work performed inside Ward’s historic Couture Ateliers. The volumes are carefully designed to beautify the body of the bride with clever draping, belts, or corsets that refine the waistline.
The head note is in the innovative embroideries and details. The fine lace is highlighted by pearls and macramé flowers. The dresses stand out with their fine and innovative embroideries delicately made by the agile hands of the Ateliers fairies.
The base note lies in the selection of the best Italian silks. Lace, Organza and Gazar mingle with Mikado, Crepe and Chiffon. The layering of material is one of this Collection's highlights, where embroidered fabrics feature subtle see-through effect.

The new emblem was launched on November 7th 2013 in a special event held in the Tony Ward Couture headquarters, at the presence of the press, members of the jury, and contestants.
In the spirit of encouraging new talents, a competition was launched to create a new Emblem for the brand
Tony Ward Couture House has a new emblem: a visually powerful symbol with pure, balanced and elegant lines that perfectly summarize the Universe of the brand. In the spirit of encouraging and promoting the artistic talent of the Lebanese youth, an endeavor very dear to the heart of the Designer, a competition was launched to create the best emblem design. The fascinating yet complex challenge involved more than 60 students and young graphic design and art direction professionals who presented more than 150 creations. All responded enthusiastically, delighted by the unique opportunity to create an emblem for the internationally renowned Couture House.

Above and beyond elegance and subtlety, one idea is essential when attempting to describe the style of Tony Ward: Timelessness. The use of the circle, symbol of infinity, has therefore naturally imposed itself to me as the graphical representation of the essence of the brand. I have combined the initials T and W to form a circular element that respects the identity of Tony Ward with its sleek and elegant lines.

After long and intense deliberations, the creation of Noor Akar, a Masters student at ALBA, was found unequivocally outstanding. In addition to a financial prize, the lucky winner had the opportunity to accompany the Tony Ward team in one of its fashion shows in Europe and live the privileged behind the scenes experience.

Interview with Alphonse Kai, Architect of the Tony Ward headquarters & flagship store
Be it fashion legends like Pierre Balmain and Paco Rabanne, or more recent designers such as Tom Ford, some of the most iconic fashion designers have started their careers in architecture. Meanwhile, contemporary architects such as Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry are often solicited by fashion brands to design capsule collections or 3D printed garments. Also, with the rise of flagship stores, architects assume an increasingly important role in incarnating the ideas and values of fashion designers.
However, while Architecture is here to stay, Fashion is something that is meant to be renewed every season… Between timelessness and change, Alphonse Kai (JC International), the Architect who won the International competition to design the Tony Ward Building and Interiors, shares with us how he worked closely with Tony Ward to translate his vision into breathtaking volumes and details.

ARCHITECTURE
"Dressmaking is the Architecture of movement" Pierre Balmain
Q: What was the concept behind the Tony Ward building architecture?A: When the “Maison de Couture Tony Ward” competition was launched, I challenged myself to find a concept and to answer the question that most modernists ask: “How to combine architecture and fashion.” I tried to overcome this hard task by searching for a simple yet coherent answer.
Being an architect faithful to Le Corbusier, I wanted the architecture of this fashion house to be nothing but a podium, a pedestal, a base, a foundation that adds value to all fashion masterpieces perpetually created by Tony Ward.
Tailoring the Ultimate Brand Experience
68
A: In my opinion, Architecture must be timeless; it should be sustainable and must not follow any trend, vogue, or “fashion”. This is why I went for pure geometric shapes, straight lines, rhythm, extra thoroughness and precision. I opted for black and white with shades of gray to highlight Ward’s fashion and the bright or pastel colors of his collections.
Q: Should Architecture Follow Fashion?
69
Q: The building houses the Boutique, the Couture salons, the Offices and the Atliers, each with different design needs and requirements. How did you come up with a specific design for every space?
A: On the ground floor, the boutique fits with subtlety in the urban setting alongside the road. The mezzanine space is dedicated to the bridal world. The first and second floors have a common feature, a solid black block that opens onto a void. From the inside, this block houses the all-mirrored fitting room on the first floor, and the master’s office on the second floor. The other floors are the “beehive” where all the Tony Ward creations are skillfully brought to life in free, open, and well-lit spaces that ensure comfort to the designers and couture teams. To “top” all these levels with yet more beauty, I went for a garden rooftop with a small loft that can be used as a private reception area.
“A void connects the levels dedicated to fashion: from the ground floor to the second floor. By creating space rather than a succession of floors, these levels are connected by the steps of a white staircase against a background wall of gray flamed granite.”
