The event is in our normal meeting room at C.ex, starting at the usual time of 6:15pm. Pride in Work: The awardees were nominated by the local community. They are: Diane Holt – Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club active patrolling member, Local Primary Schools swimming teacher/program coordinator employee, Woolgoolga Swim School teacher and volunteer. Anne and Will Hushon - Self employed Business owners and Postal and Cafe/Retail Ser- vices at the Corindi Beach Post Office. Dana Eden - Self employed Business owner and Health and Fitness expert. Jude Walter - Health Club 50 Seniors Instructor employee, Woolgoolga Returned Services Club. Induction of Kim Thompson: We look forward to celebrating the induction of Kim Thompson to our club. Kim has already become a regular attendee at meetings, an indefati- gable worker on auction days, and attended our Museum visit. She is a registered Nurse with expertise in Accreditation and Medical Practice Management. She currently works full time at Bulgarr Ngaru Aboriginal Corp. in Grafton. Now that her daughters have left home she is keen to make a difference in her local community. Kim has already developed a particular interest in Rotarians Against Malaria. Kim – we hope you find the friendship of Rotarians, and the privilege to make a difference in our community, richly rewarding, and may we in return find your participation to be an added source of strength to our club (as it already has). REPORT: SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE TUES 5 APRIL The second Science & Engineering Challenge was a great success, with over 240 students from 7 high schools displaying some admirable problem-solving, creative and lateral think- ing skills. The winning team was again McAuley Catholic College (Grafton; 1349 points); Bishop Druitt College (1182) was second, with Coffs Harbour High and Woolgoolga High not far behind. Woolgoolga did well to provide an extra team and a half at the last minute, substituting for a no-show team [Toormina High] (this Woolgoolga team comprised Year 7 students, who did very well in a number of activities!) and boosting a small team sent by St John Paul College. The other schools were South Grafton and Dorrigo High. There were therefore 8 teams and 8 activities on the day (Bridge, Hovercraft, Mars Rover, Catapault, the bionic hand, Helter Skelter earthquake tower, Stringways and “Electracity”). We had around 30 volunteers there on the day from Rotary, Lions, Probus, Woopi Walkers and other com- munity members as well as a number of teachers to assist. [Photos on page 3] At the Dinner on the 4th April guest speaker Professor Emeritus Alan Bell spoke about the huge range of careers available now, and emerging in the future, in the agriculture industry: everything from high-tech stock management and food supply chains, through biosecurity and risk management, to environmental sustainability. Attendees had a lot of fun building a Berocca rocket. Andrew Fraser, our local state member, also attended! The food and service at the Seaview Tavern was widely praised. Sponsors were Woolgoolga Rotary Club, Woolgoolga Lions Club and the University of Newcastle together with financial support from Engineers Australia, Sullivan-Nicolaides Pa- thology Services, Clarence Consulting, LG Consulting, Coffs Harbour and Coffs Harbour South Rotary clubs. The organizing team did a wonderful job: Phil Dalton, Head Teacher Science at WHS, Peter Lacy (President), Michael Hope (Lions), Patty Delaney, Chris Ed- wards, Leslie Casey and Gordon Letts. LAST MEETING (14 Mar) Recrea onal Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians (etc!) Six Rotary couples from Queensland joined us, and it was great to have a full room with lots of lively conversation and some fascinating travel stories. Our northern guests were from the RVFR – Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians – who stayed for a week at Darlington Beach. “Boss drovers” were Paul and Annie McNeill from Red-cliffe Rotary, their clubmates John and Dee Green, Bill and Di Vanderstaay from Mermaid Beach Rotary, Neal and Robyn Schneidewin from Wynnum Manly Rotary, Bill and Fran Thirkill from Rocks River Rotary (Oxley), and from Jindalee Rotary were Ron and Shirley Clark and Michael and Sandra Langford. Some guests and members took the opportunity to tell us about something unusual that happened to them while trav-elling: eg Glenda Kennedy described 4-wheel-drive ventures deep into the Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia after turning off the road from Riyadh & through a fence, & showed us souvenirs of petrified forests & ancient axe heads. Dick Matthews told of a trip from Port Hedland (WA) to Warwick (QLD) with 1½ days of saturating dust through a lost rear window, and successful repair of a petrol tank leak with soap – on advice from his mother! Keith Minhin-nett spoke of a trip to north India, helping leper children. Pam Fayle told of the stark contrast between being tear-gassed in a diplomatic vehicle in Seoul, and a trip from Canberra to Tamworth, where younger son Tim asked “are we there yet?” before clearing the outskirts of Canberra. Bill Thirkill, driving a full bus in Moscow, was pulled up by a policeman; when it was clear the man understood no English, Bill jovially said to him, “ugly-looking p… aren’t you?”, and the laughter ensuing sent the policeman into retreat! We also watched a great presentation from Clarence Harré (currently on Rotary Youth Exchange in Austria) made about his recent Honeywell Engineering Summer School experience. FIJI – CYCLONE WINSTON DAMAGE – KEITH MINHINNETT

Keith told us about his family connection with a village that has been devastated by cyclone Winston and his plans to go over to assist. He showed photos of the damage to the village of Vuna at the southern end of Taveuni Is, outlined problems with water, food hygiene, supplies and shelter. More than 50 houses were com-pletely destroyed there. He indicated that a Rotary donation to assist would be welcome and would be properly spent and acquitted. The Board is to discuss this project as well as Shelterbox, Aquabox and other options for helping in Fiji.
