DEFINITION OF TONE•Tone in a piece of writing refers to the attitude

of the author or speaker about his subject or about the audience.

•Just as speakers change tone of voice to express themselves, writers do as well. Since we can’t hear tone in a written piece, however, we have to read it and make some inferences. We do this by looking closely at the author’s choice of diction, imagery, details and sentence structure.
