Jan – Apr 2015

WELCOMEWelcome to the first Tonbridge Arts offering for 2015. As usual there is a wide range of events for you to enjoy, whether you are a seasoned campaigner or one of our precocious Arts-tots reading this brochure. The musical events look particularly gripping, with the return of Howard Goodall’s Psalm 122, and a selection of Bach’s organ music played by James McVinnie; both of these events can be enjoyed in the majestic surroundings of the Tonbridge School chapel.

A highlight of the visual arts will be Charlotte Chisholm’s show ‘And Stone Softens’: expect beautiful and intelligent work. The lecture by Iain Sinclair will, I imagine, take us on a picaresque odyssey around the landscapes of psychogeography; you must come along to find out more. On a lighter note, come and laugh with ‘Abandoman’, or take a satirical journey to Downton. For dance fans we have the return of the acclaimed Ballet Central, and for younger theatre-goers the entertainingly action-packed adventure of ‘Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs’.

We are sure that there will be something here for you: come and join us.

Howard Goodall is one of Britain’s most versatile musicians. As well as acting as Classic FM’s Composer in Residence, he has written music for TV and film including Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf and Mr Bean. His Channel Four series have established him as a leading figure in British music life. Psalm 122 was composed for Tonbridge School to commemorate the rebuilding of the Chapel in 1993 but was originally performed in Rochester Cathedral. It received its first performance in the space for which it was intended in March 2010 to great acclaim. The work is scored for Symphony Orchestra, Organ, Chamber Choir, Choristers and a chorus part for the whole school (half the school will perform each night). AND STONE SOFTENSAN EXHIBITION OF WORK BY CHARLOTTE CHISHOLM

PRIVATE VIEW FRIDAY 23RD JANUARY 6.30 – 8.30PM A TALK BY THE ARTISTOBS Gallery presents work by Charlotte Chisholm, artist and Head of Art at Tonbridge School. The horizon, and its endlessly shifting edges, forms the focus for this mixed exhibition of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. Our experience of landscape, seen through the lens of light and memory, has been an on-going theme, and one which the artist has returned to throughout her life.

Within this exhibition the artist shows recent work alongside work made up to 25 years ago, and through it exposes an innate fascination with material, form and the timeless energy and presence of line itself.

An opportunity to hear Charlotte Chisholm talk about the exhibition And Stone Softens. She will discuss the development of her ideas and themes, her influences and the appeal of the wide range of different processes that she uses to create her work.

‘ECSTATIC TRUTH: VENTURING AROUND MOTORWAYS, BACK RIVERS AND RAILWAYS, IN THE SPIRIT OF WG SEBALD, JOHN CLARE, WERNER HERZOG AND OTHER VISIONARY TRAMPS AND FOOT SOLDIERS.’A LECTURE BY IAIN SINCLAIR ON PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY AND WRITING OF TRAVEL AND PLACE

Iain Sinclair is a poet, novelist, film-maker and essayist most famous in recent years for his writing about place and journeys. His 2002 non-fiction book ‘London Orbital’ traced a series of walks made around the route of the M25 motorway, setting the tone for much of his recent work which has focused on the psychological effect of location, often called psychogeography. He has recently curated an installation art exhibit following in the footsteps of the poet John Clare in flight from his own madness, described as ‘A great English pilgrimage and a self-enacted novel in the tradition of Pilgrim’s Progress.’

‘Sinclair walks every inch of his wonderful novels and psychogeographies, pacing out huge word-courses like an architect laying out a city on an empty plain.’ — J. G. BALLARD, THE OBSERVER.
