the energy of operaIMPACT twists vibrant life into the world’s best-known opera

Photography: Impact by Mike Eddowes

by Natalie AudleyAs part of Brighton Fringe 2012, Impact Opera will present a revival of the famous Spanish story whose title character is the ultimate femme fatale who evokes the spirit of danger, passion and heartbreaking romance.Carmen was first written as an opera in the 1800s and rapidly grew to fame due to its tragic twists and turns, becoming a firm favourite amongst the more romantic of opera goers. It tells the story of Don José, a soldier who has been swept up in the mystery of Carmen, the woman no man can tame. In various incarnations Carmen has been played for many years in the UK, enjoyed by cultured audiences. Yet Impact Opera’s upcoming production for Brighton Fringe re-imagines and gives an exciting English-speaking twist to the show. It features a cast of twenty-six singers, dancers and musicians who give new life to Georges Bizet’s final opera. Impact’s Flamenco dancers,

Asked to name an opera, most people’s first suggestion will be Carmen. It is, arguably, the world’s most popular opera. But what do we really know about the show, and how familiar are we with its flamboyant flamenco?

singers and actors aim to excite a new audience with Bizet’s classic tale, and bring a differing twist the world’s most famous opera. The dancing featured in this production has been based on the chorography of the Seville-based Flamenco dancer Noemí Luz, and the show is due to tour onwards from Brighton Fringe, to Lincoln and Bath. Director Peter Knapp, whose previous experience hints at a great dramatic promise, has gained glowing reviews for previous productions, such as Country Life: “Knapp’s inventive production keeps the stage alive with movement...an adaptation that really works with an inspired re-orchestration.”Carmen by Impact Opera. Approaching the final third of this Festival month, what’s the best way to pick out winners from the crowd?

1 – The flick and jab method.Flick through the two enormous programmes, then jab a finger confidently towards the unknown. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon a gem, but if not at least you’ll have a story to tell.2 – The niche challenge.Think of something. Anything. Then see if there’s a show about it. There probably will be. Sinatra, surely. Deckchairs, definitely. Hanover, h’absolutely.3 – The first-flyer commitment.Read nothing, hear nothing, just get a ticket for the very first flyer that arrives in your hand.4 – The Fringe City spotter. Why take the chance of going into a dark room full of strangers watching something you’ve never heard of? You can do exactly that out on the street at New Road or Old Steine, where hardy performing folk will be entertaining the masses. See only the best.

7 ways to choose a show

5 – The risk-averse.Only see shows awarded four stars or more by at least three respected national publications. If three people who are judged as ‘culturally aware’ have enjoyed a show, there is absolutely no chance that you won’t.6 – The real-life telly.See only comedians “seen on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Road Show”. These talented folk tell jokes which have been certified funny by BBC officials. Laughter is almost literally guaranteed.7 – The talking to strangers.Queues, bars, pubs, venues, public parks. In all these places during May it becomes socially acceptable to talk to people, and specifically to ask whether they’ve seen any good shows. Take your pick, and enjoy the results!

which sunday are you?
