YEAR 6 CURRICULUM NEWSLE TTER TERM 5/6

Topic

TOMORROW’S WORLD

ENGLISH Children will be reading books that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes. They will identify and discuss themes and conventions in and across a wide range of writing. They will discuss and evaluate the language, considering the impact on the reader. There will be a major focus on writing the next two terms. Children will be writing a monologue, fact file, letter of complaint, description, and book review – evaluation and recount and play script.

MATHS This term we will be using and applying Maths through investigations, problem solving and reasoning. We will link Maths to real life when planning for our prom and for our fund raising Fridays. Pupils will apply their mathematical skills to a series of problems with increasing sophistication. They will also apply their mathematical knowledge to other subjects e.g DT, Science.

ART Children will be looking at Futuristic Art and learn about the great artist called Umberto Boccioni. They will discuss the art work of Umberto Boccioni -The City Rises (1910). Children will explain what the futuristic art movement was. They will plan and design their own futuristic city. They will improve their mastery of art and design techniques.

COMPUTING We are going to research and design our own templates for fact files. We will present our findings on Power-point presentations. We will use word processing to complete our fact file. Children will create their own website with quiz questions.

RE / PHSE Year 6 children will be having their transition to secondary school in the next 2 terms. They will be looking at changes in and around them. Link to Science –adaptation to new environment.

DT Children will design a fururistic car. They will generate, develop and model their initial ideas through models and proto types. They will evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work. They will apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures. Children will also be designing costumes for ‘Grease Performance’.

MFL

Children will engage in conversation; ask and answer questions and express opinions. They will appreciate different stories, songs in French.

HOMEWORK: A gentle reminder that children have spellings to learn each week and are expected to read every day. Please practise times table too. We also have online homework: SumDog and Bug Club.

PE In PE children will be learning to play competitive games and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending. They will develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. They will take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges, both on their own and within a team.

MUSIC/ DRAMA As part of our end of year performance, all pupils will be taking part in their end of year production ‘Grease’. They will listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory. Pupils will gain knowledge, skills and understanding associated with the artistic practice of drama. They will adopt, create and sustain a range of audiences, as well as rehearse, refine, share and respond thoughtfully to drama.

SCIENCE We will be looking at evolution and inheritance, living things and habitats. Children will learn how living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. They will identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.
