BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEOn behalf of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Board of Directors, I want to congratulate you on this important milestone in your life.

After months and, in many cases, years of classes and studies, it may seem that you have finally reached the end of your journey today — and you have. Graduating is an important achievement, and one of great pride. Yet as you complete this important journey, know that you are also beginning another. It is a journey of lifelong learning. It is a journey that will serve you well in all your future endeavours.

Your classes may be over, but this is not the end of your relationship with Saskatchewan Polytechnic. In the future, we look forward to welcoming you again — as Alumni, instructors, employers, mentors, parents, supporters and friends.

Congratulations!

Ralph BoychukChair, Saskatchewan Polytechnic Board of Directors

HONORARY DIPLOMA RECIPIENT “From those to whom much is given, much is expected”. Those are the words that Malcolm Jenkins lives by. He believes in the importance of community and giving back to that community. He is the proud owner of the Prince Albert Canadian Tire and has lived in Saskatchewan for over 25 years. Malcolm has been successful in improving the quality of facilities and life through his generous contributions. His contributions go beyond his financial generosity, his true gift is his ability to rally the community to achieve great things.

In 2013, he made a donation to the Pineview Terrace Lodge during the facility’s furnishing campaign, which helped campaign organizers reach and exceed their goal. Other organizations he has donated to include the Friday Night Lights campaign, Special Olympics, the Rotary Trail, the Kinsmen Skateboard Park, the E.A. Rawlinson Centre and the Alfred Jenkins Field House, which was named after his father.

Malcolm was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 2006, received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit for his philanthropic support of the Prince Albert community and was the recipient of the Samuel McLeod Legacy award in 2011. In 2013, he was inducted into the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame and more recently, he was voted as Prince Albert’s Best Citizen in paNOW’s Best of the Best (BOB).

MISSION To educate students and provide skilled and successful graduates.

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILESaskatchewan Polytechnic serves 28,000 distinct students through applied learning opportunities at campuses in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon, and through extensive distance education opportunities. Programs serve every economic and public service sector. As a polytechnic, the organization provides the depth of learning appropriate to employer and student need, including certificate, diploma and degree programs, and apprenticeship training. Saskatchewan Polytechnic engages in applied research, drawing on faculty expertise to support innovation by employers, and providing students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.

VISIONBy 2020, our expertise in responsive applied education and research that meet student and market needs will make us globally recognized as the first-choice polytechnic in Canada.

VALUESRESPECTWe care about one another and about our workplace. We foster an open and inclusive environment that embraces diverse cultures, heritages and opinions; we learn, work and support each other as one team.

INTEGRITYWe are committed to being accountable and transparent. We are honest with one another. We hold ourselves to high standards of ethical behavior and take responsibility for our actions.

SUSTAINABILITYWe work, live and learn in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. We support the health, safety and overall well-being of our students, employees and partners. We are conscientious stewards of our resources and continuously look for entrepreneurial and creative ways to strengthen and improve our organization. These considerations underlie all our actions, behaviours and decisions.

EXCELLENCEWe go above and beyond what is normally expected to achieve excellence in our teaching, in our programming, in our learning and in our services. We accomplish this by maintaining high standards, strong competencies, committed partnerships and by being responsive and accessible.

ACADEMIC DRESSAlong with the academic tradition of black gowns, Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads wear v-stoles in the colour selected for each school. Other members of the platform procession wear the gown and v-stole, hood, or in some instances, a hat or mortarboard representing a credential they have received or the Saskatchewan Polytechnic v-stole that represents the school in which they teach.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESSStudents in the Office Administration program are given a number of pathways for program completion. Students may be granted exemptions based on prior learning through employment or other post-secondary institutions. Students may complete courses through a combination of full- or part-time studies, in classrooms or online. To increase student success, our full-time program in Prince Albert carried out a pilot project in 2016-2017 that involved weekend tutoring. Students were grateful for the extra help and many reported better academic performance as a result. The program plans to move forward with this initiative in 2017-2018.

SCHOOL OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGYKyla Henry is a second year student in the Graphic Communications program at Regina Campus. Kyla won gold at the Skills Canada Saskatchewan provincial competition in April 2016 and gold and best of region in the Skills Canada national competition in June 2016. Kyla will be competing with Team Canada at the 44th WorldSkills in Abu Dhabi this October. Congrats Kyla!

SCHOOL OF NURSING2017 has been an exceptionally exciting year for the School of Nursing as we celebrated 50 years of delivering quality nursing education. A number of events were held in the spring to honour the pioneering efforts of our alumni in advancing nursing education, research and scholarly work, as well as to celebrate the achievements of our current students, graduates, faculty and staff.

A Legacy Trust was established to commemorate the School of Nursing’s 50th Anniversary. The Trust will fund scholarships

and bursaries for future generations of students enrolled in the School of Nursing programs. Funds raised will ensure nursing students have the financial supports needed to succeed in fulfilling their academic dreams.

SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCESCongratulations to Susan Thiessen, program head, Veterinary Technology program, on her innovative work in collaborating with Veterinary Simulator Industries to create an Equine Palpation Radiology Limb prototype. The prototype can be attached to the custom VSI Equine Palpation Colic Model. The equine simulator has an x-rayable limb, inflatable GI tract and colon, reproductive organs, injectable veins and muscles and functioning eyes and eyelids to practice administration of eye drops. Sask Polytech is currently the only institution in North America to have this simulator to promote student learning.

SCHOOL OF CONSTRUCTION This past December several of our Architectural Technologies students and instructors traveled to Thailand to volunteer with Global Neighbors. The Sask Polytech volunteers built various buildings for Burmese refugees. The students fundraised to cover their travel costs as well as Global Neighbors’ construction costs. Global Neighbors’ model is to build facilities in communities where there is a committed group of residents who can successfully operate needed services such as schools and medical buildings.

Crystal Bueckert, a 2008 graduate of Sask Polytech who started Bldg Studio Inc. in 2010 and now does about 85 projects a year, was featured in Maclean’s magazine. Crystal is focused on designing sustainable residential infill homes and small commercial buildings. Congrats Crystal!

2016-17 HIGHLIGHTS & ACHIEVEMENTS FROM OUR SCHOOLS

Page 13: TOMORROW IN THE MAKING - Saskatchewan Polytechnic€¦ · 2016 and gold and best of region in the Skills Canada national competition in June 2016. Kyla will be competing with Team

SCHOOL OF TRANSPORTATIONSask Polytech’s Auto Body and Automotive Service Technician programs in Regina and Saskatoon have been partnering with SGI for over 15 years to repair total-loss cars that are not economical to fix in a commercial body shop. Once repaired the vehicles join the SGI fleet. This is the first partnership of its kind and is a win-win situation for all involved. Students are provided with a hands-on learning opportunity to work on damaged vehicles, SGI saves money on fleet vehicles and taxpayers save money as both organizations are collaborating to repair vehicles that would end up in salvage.

SCHOOL OF MINING, ENERGY AND MANUFACTURING This year several CAD/CAM, Electrical Engineering and Machinist students competed in and won a variety of medals at Skills Canada provincial and national competitions. Our Mechanical Engineering program in collaboration with our CAD/CAM program entered a student-designed and created ultra-fuel-efficient vehicle in the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas competition. Instrumentation program students participated in the International Society of Automation competition in Calgary, which hosts teams from around the world including the United States, Brazil and India.

SCHOOL OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT Sask Polytech’s Natural Resources faculty and staff received a team award at the first annual Science, Technology, Innovation and Collaboration (STIC) Awards ceremony hosted by Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA). The Sask Polytech and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation partnership behind Hannin Creek

won a silver medal in the international IPN-Global Best competition. The facility provides users with exceptional opportunities to learn more about themselves and the world around them. Numerous students from the BioScience Technology program were awarded Applied Research Student Project scholarships and the Sask Polytech Innovation Award was given to a Chemical Technology student.

SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISMAt this year’s winter camp, Recreation and Community Development students volunteered with the Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race, a 12 dog continuous mid-distance race. The race follows a route similar to that of the old sled dog trail used for years by trappers, the North-West Mounted Police and First Nations communities to travel between Prince Albert and La Ronge. The total distance of the race is approximately 600 kilometers.

SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES AND COMMUNITY SAFETYSeveral students in the Regina campus Adult 12 program who are working toward high school completion have earned three dual credits with Early Childhood Education (ECE). Dual credits allow students the opportunity to earn post-secondary credits while they also earn high school credits. This is the first dual credit collaboration between ECE and Adult 12 at Sask Polytech.
