Artist Statement/ Bio

“My desire is to filter the three dimensional image through heart-felt emotional responses and in

some small way enrich the viewer’s spirit. Toward that end, I use simplified line, enriched

values, and complementary color in an attempt to give homage to the Creator, the true Artist of

Excellence.” - - Tom Fisher

Tom Fisher is a master oil artist who is passionate about his art. He is an impressionist oil artist

that is easily identified by his signature use of strong, bold color.

Fisher studied at the University of Minnesota, St. Cloud State University and Bemidji State

University, with additional experience as a commercial technical illustrator for a top 500

company.

His paintings are held in many private collections throughout the Unites States and have been

featured in number newspaper articles. He has also produced numerous large scale window

designs in stained-glass for churches throughout the United States.

“As an artist I try to capture the color, line, value and design created by light as it cascades along

the surfaces of the subject, In addition, I try to simplify and yet hopefully leave an impression

that speaks to the viewer”.

Fisher usually picks a dominant colour and then with use of transparent glazes and additional

intense color he brings out interest in different areas of the painting. His palette uses a double

primary palette made up of warm and cool yellow, red and blue oil paint topped with orange or

violet to provide transparency or opaqueness. He focuses on subject edges and uses transparent

glazes combined with impasto brush strokes of opaque paint to provide the finished painting with

greater impact.

"I walk a line as an artist somewhere between making the subject look real or making it look

interesting. I feel more of a pull on my heart strings to make it look interesting than to look real,

as photographs are used to capture that type of reality and, besides, real can be boring. Therefore,

I simplify some areas and/or aspects of the subject, I stray from reality, and I enhance or use

whatever color I like, thereby improving the painting, hopefully, in the eyes of the potential

viewer and give each work its’ own personality. Of course, the play of values across the image

will always be of utmost importance.”
