About Me

With over 10 years experience working at management level throughout the industry (running multiple venue rosters in every major territory of the London clubland market – North / South / East and Central London); I am a highly experienced In-house Events Manager / Venue Programmer / Live + Club Booker and Freelance Industry Consultant; with an extensive track record of breaking records, transforming venue rosters and booking

Page 2: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

sellout in-house + external events; with my finger firmly on the pulse of London’s clubland & live music scenes.

Having been head-hunted for positions as Head of Events / Head Booker / Events Manager and Venue Programmer for multiple venues and clubs from 300 to 1500 cap, I have consistently worked with many of the industries hottest Promoters, DJs, Bands and Clubnight brands, which has allowed me to build strong Promoter connections across the genres; inter-personal relations with major Press / PR + Agency contacts; aswell as an unrivalled database of B2B contacts throughout the upper echelons of the live music industry.

Throughout my career, I have had the good fortune of working with the biggest clubnight brands within every major genre:- from Indie / Rock n Roll / Electro, right through to House, Techno, Drum n Bass, Funk n Soul, Blues, Jazz, HipHop, RnB, ElectroSwing (and everything inbetween); which has in turn given me a detailed understanding of the London nightlife market within almost every major demographic, genre and scene.

However – no-one can know it all, so I believe that what makes me uniquely effective and efficient is the fact that I utilize progressive promoter + artist analytic techniques to gauge profile and draw of any given external event, in addition to meta-data intel and custom promotional strategies to engineer profitable in-house events for whatever venue specific / tailored / custom format and target market is required – often using expert contacts to get the inside line on anything I may not know about a given scene so I always have the edge over my competitors.

In terms of specific freelance / independent career highlights – I have launched multiple venue-filling clubnight brands tailored to the needs of the client / venue to maximize footfall, profits and exposure

e.g. Music Week's Agency Showcase / Industry Networking Events ‘BreakOut’ which I devised from scratch, launching with a front pulling 400-600 members of the industry for major ITB / CAA / Primary / Xray etc agency showcases every month for over 5years;

Tales of the Unexpected – Friday Nights @ Proud Camden - turned over 1000-1500cap footfall every week throughout my tenure as Head Booker for Proud Group; breaking nightly, monthly + quarterly revenue records;

Page 3: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

with 4figure profit margins OTD + nightly takings between £25-£35K OTB - depending on the time of year and relative budgetary outlay.

Re. In-house Promotions, I have managed + personally orchestrated all the promotional / pr and marketing for numerous venues throughout my career, as well as building full in-house teams for venues such as Clapham Grand / Bloomsbury Lanes / Brixton Jamm, in addition to signing off unbeatable deals with my 3rd party Viral Marketing and PR partners – Little Black Book PR / Tidal Agency.

In relation to in-house events / residencies - I am experienced at submitting detailed pre-event budgets and post event PnL reports, accurate weekly + monthly footfall predictions for staffing, as well as writing promotional + press release copy + event function sheets for the Ops / Tech teams with ALL event info / requirements to go out to promoters / performers + all contributors to every event in the calendar.

As an independent promoter, my clubnights and concept night events have garnered national press exposure both previewing and reviewing event’s which I have devised, booked and promoted from scratch to produce profitable and sustainable nights all over London.

2016 – Freelance Project Case Study:-

The Promoter Network Ltd joining forces with ‘The Music Venue Trust’ / ‘CALM’ / ‘Secret Garden Party’ and Eddy Tenple Morris to launch our latest Clubnight brand – WhiteRabbit Allnighter @ Brixton Electric – 13/05/16 w/ global superstar and national treasure ‘Frank Turner’ headlining the launch night with Skinny Lister and The Wholls in support + Dj Sets from Eddy TM / Mark Beaumont (NME) + Adam O. The night was announced to national exposure and sold-out 1700 presales in 8minutes flat at £15 a ticket. This is also the first night in a series of shows in partnership with ‘Secret Garden Party’ and The Music Venue Trust as part of our new residency @ Brixton Electric.

Regarding ‘The Promoter Network Ltd’ Freelance Consultancy Services I have an outstanding team of freelance live + dj bookers, digital / viral + e-marketers, graphic designers, videographers, pr + press managers + just about every other service that any major venue or client could require facilitated through my extended team.

Page 4: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

As Director of The Promoter Network Ltd working full-time for venues / nightclubs in recent years - I have built and managed In-house Promotions to great success; first auditing, then re-building venue rosters, marketing strategies and booking policies. This has often involved far more than just booking; building in-house teams, sub-promotional student rep teams, street-teams, sophisticated promoted post targeting + Press Releases and E-marketing - maximising results through effective direction of Promo, Marketing and PR Departments for major club and venue brands.

In addition to venue programming / booking in-house + external clubnights, gigs and events of all kinds and sizes over the years, I also have solid experience working with private hire and corporate clients to deliver custom events, launch parties and PR platforms; having worked with internationally renowned brands / companies / sponsors & artists to deliver the requirements of clients throughout the creative industries.... from record labels to magazines, fashion labels and national media outlets.

I now have an influential and informed position within the industry as well as a personable manner + strong musical knowledge across the Live Music and Dance Music Genres.

I love what i do and my experience, contacts and promotional expertise have enabled me to achieve previously unsurpassed success, profile, numbers and revenue; through building unparalleled rosters of events at some of London's hottest venues through the years.

Head Live Music Booker and Event Programmer for Proud Group –

Page 10: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

Proud Camden - 800cap

Key Responsibilities:

Events Manager / Venue Programmer / Head Booker / PR / Marketing for Proud Camden and Proud Cabaret:

"No-one has booked the venue as successfully - before or since Tom Wright was Head Booker for Proud Camden" Alex Proud (MD - Proud Group)

- Proud Camden (Main Gallery 800cap + South Gallery 200cap) - 2 club nights booked every night of the week across the Main Gallery / South Gallery

During my time at Proud, I built Proud's roster until we had a completely full roster - with 2 major club nights every single night of the week - booked 3 months in advance.

I worked with 40-60 promoters in any given month and brought in previously unsurpassed numbers on every night of the week, bringing in some of the biggest promoters in the industry (Sunday Best / The Remix / Smash and Grab) as well as booking the venue’s sellout weekly Friday night in-house club-night + orchestrating major in-house events generating capacity numbers and £20K-£30K+ bar-spends:

I personally brought in and programmed a roster of nights including:

Music Week's Industry night - Breakout - midweek night, monthly - generated capacity numbers!

I devised the concept, pitched it to Music Week, got them onboard as official partners and launched the night with Music Week and All Night Long Promotions who I brought onboard to manage the night (due to my exclusivity contract with Proud Group preventing me from running my own night or working with other brands to profit from events at Proud).

MW ran a front page article about the launch and regular half page previews and reviews on each event. Every night has a major industry presence with high profile industry given exclusive access to the stables

Page 11: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

making the night THE monthly networking event for the industry and a must for A+R due to the calibre of the line-ups - always way ahead of the curve thanks to our unique positioning with insider info from the events industry affiliates, labels, press and agents. This high concept event was a result of a gap in the market I identified which takes advantage of agents need to push their hottest new acts - allowing them to expose them to a guaranteed high profile industry crowd, in exchange for giving us a major headliner from their roster....which in turn, ensures sellout numbers and thusly exposure for their new acts.

Sunday Best - Rob Da Bank's label event / flagship club night....say no more. Capacity Numbers + Queues round the block on a Wednesday night.

Smash and Grab - Queens Of Noize night (with exclusive live performances from some of the biggest acts in the UK such as Florence and the Machine, Eliza Doolittle and many more which received huge national press + critical acclaim in the music press, national and London wide papers and gossip columns)

XFM's Club Remix - The sellout weekly incarnation of Eddy Temple Morris's genre defining club night featuring huge DJs such as Herve and the Prodigy as well as the most hotly tipped NME and XFM Indy bands which received regular features and reviews in the music press as a seminal night.

The Playground - Huge monthly club night doing capacity numbers (on a Wednesday night!) featuring the hottest new live acts. The Playground hosts some of the biggest events at venues such as KOKO, XOYO, 93 Feet East and many more with french super-label Kitsune.

Call The Landlord - Infamous Monday night Rave from the Warehouse promoters behind some of the biggest illegal raves...gone legit. I brought them in and they now do capacity numbers on Monday and Tuesday nights!

Criminal Records presents Harajuku - another event doing huge numbers (500+) on Tuesday nights with a kitsch japanese theme hosted by uber-cool indie label Criminal records.

Banjam - renowned super-cool club night from top industry A+R featuring

Page 12: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

some of the biggest bands and DJs in the industry in an insanely intimate environment (Proud South Gallery). William Orbit, The Kooks, Lily Allen and many more have all performed in the past.

Tales of The Unexpected - Proud's high-concept (Weekly / Capacity Footfall) in-house Friday night featuring circus performers and burlesque, with the Live acts and DJs booked by myself.

HotVox - weekly mini-festival featuring multiple live performances across several stages with Big line-ups of Live Bands and strong numbers for this, now, highly established night. HotVox use physical ticketing with each of the bands incentivized with commission and expected to generate strong ticket sales.

This Feeling - nationally renowned indie night regularly featuring huge acts such as Kasabian, The Music. and many more northern heroes. The night - hosted by the Rifles (who regularly performed live) featured in the Music Press and the Bizarre section of The Sun with previews for every event.

Glasswerk - major promotions company putting on high profile live nights bringing in big numbers on their regular Tuesday nights. Glasswerk put on event all over London and are given key dates at major venues such as The Islington Academy etc.

Time For Heroes - Major East-end promoters who took over Thursday nights booking big acts like Coco Sumner

Sheltered - Daytime event every Sunday afternoon from the Team behind Digital Disco; hosts at massive national student Indie night Propaganda

GeekOut - Extremely Popular Concept driven Dress-up Industry Indy Night promoted by legendary NME writer Mark Beaumont, Nme Associate editor Hamish Macbain and NME online editor

Whos Jack - renowned Fashion/Music magazine host this Arty night with major acts, fashion shows, art installations and the coolest crowd in London of fashionistas and musos.

Blowout - One of London's coolest Djs and friend to the stars Sam Young

Page 13: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

and John Woolfe brought their Dance night with high profile celeb DJs such as DJ Yoda, Shy FX, Jaguar Skillz, Hot Chip, Caspa, Skream and Benga and many more to Proud from its prior home, Bungalow 8.

Dead Or Alive - Flagship night from Long Running live music brand featuring 4 band bills of the best of the best acts road tested at Dead or Alive's other nights. These events always did the numbers as every act had already packed one of their other nights so the line-ups were guaranteed, which is why I gave them a regular slot in the roster.

I also booked all the high profile in-house events, including the BIG Bank Holiday shows.... including acts such as Ed Harcourt, AutoKratz, The View, Chas and Dave, Kid British, James Lavelle and many more,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Proud Cabaret (300cap) - Cabaret and Burlesque Events + swing/jazz/alternative live music + theatre

I kept the Proud Cabaret roster full with major promoters such as Kitsch Lounge Riot (who host a sellout monthly night at Club de Paris), Spilt Milk Theatre, and many more.

As well as cabaret and burlesque promoters and coming up with the concept for Proud's retrospective in-house dinner and show event Voix De Ville which now runs week in, week out to huge success. I was also responsible for booking the entertainment giving me a wide knowledge of the cabaret and burlesque world with a strong roster of contacts throughout that world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Events Manager for the Monarch (300cap), The Abbey (150cap) and The Enterprise (100cap)

MAJOR PROJECTS - Bringing in residencies and club nights such as:-

Amy Winehouse presents “Snakehips” - I worked with Amy throughout her career and we launched this night together receiving international press

Page 14: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

exposure with film crews and press from around the world covering the event. It was in all the papers and there was a queue round the block every time we did the event. Snakehips turned over record bar-takes and turned around the fortunes of the newly refurbished venue with footfall increasing tenfold even on nights with no events after its launch.

Pete Doherty - exclusive solo gig - one of the most successful intimate shows Pete had done in years..... Having worked with Pete many times before, I was able to ensure that this potentially extremely troublesome event was orchestrated with precision and professionalism. The show was carefully marketed and sold-out on pre-sales alone, leading to a highly successful and critically acclaimed show, executed to perfection from a notoriously problematic artist to promote.

Secret Live performance from The Kooks.

Dirty Pretty Things official end of tour after show party.

Rockfeedback (Transgressive Records) - Monthly sellout club night from the team behind Transgressive records (Graham Coxon, Klaxons). Each event was broadcast on Rockfeedback TV which went out on Channel 4 (and the repeat on MTV). The show had over half a million viewers across the two networks and led to HUGE exposure for the venue.

Lost vagueness: Lost In Camden - The First public events from one of the biggest promoters in the industry. Lost Vagueness are internationally renowned as THE key annual promotion and biggest resident attractions at Glastonbury. L.V. grew to such proportions in it's 20 year history at Glastonbury, that it's many stages and attractions required an area big enough to take unto 40,000 people! I approached them to do the first major collaborative event between the 3 venues under my jurisdiction as events manager for Bruce Bars LTD - The Monarch, The Abbey and The Enterprise. Lost in Camden was a huge success pulling in 1000s across the 3 venues. Lost In Camden even included both stages at Proud Camden and filled the venue to capacity by 11pm. A typically spectacular event and treatment from the Cabaret and Burlesque pro's, we co-ordinated dozens of performances across many stages with entertainment ranging from burlesque, cabaret, bands, djs, a fully functioning casino, circus, fire and aerial performances with full venue dressing across the 4 venues including countless props, visuals. This was a string example of my work and

Page 15: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

collaborations.

1234 records - Label night from the label behind SCUM, Whitey, Babyshambles and events such as Return to New York and Stunners International.

Year Zero Metro - Mark beaumont (NME) - Industry Live Music Clubnight

Love Music Hate Racism - Awareness 'Charity' Night - Capacity Numbers

Queens of Noize - DJ-led club night - 200+

Dirty Bingo Clubnight - 200+

PRESS REVIEW - THE MONARCH (About 8months after i took over):-

Below is a review / interview for London Tour Dates magazine which took place about 6 months after i took over as Events Manager:

Venue Review - The Monarch, Camden TownYour guide to essential bricks and mortar - the venues that are home to the capital’s greatest live music eventsby Tourdates Staff Writer, first published in London Tourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

“What other venue in Camden has red velvet curtains and chandeliers but still maintains that scuzzy Camden vibe?” espouses Events Manager at The Monarch Tom Wright.

That The Monarch has been able to achieve this identity so quickly is a tribute to Wright and the other major players in the venue’s story so far. After all, this time last year The Monarch was a decidedly different proposition, catering to a decidedly different sort of crowd. Needless to say, Wright has altered things for the better.

“Approximately six months ago or so,” explains Wright, “the venue was

Page 25: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

refurbished. It used to be a Wetherspoon’s and we’ve made a rather dramatic transformation. We’ve invested in an outstanding P.A, really state-of-the-art stuff.”

Few will lament the passing of the venue from that particular chain into independent hands. Well, we say independent, The Monarch is in fact run by the same team as behind Barfly, The Enterprise, The Abbey and others. But The Monarch is the ‘jewel in the crown’, to indulge in a bad pun.

It used to be called The Misty Moon, and was a fairly straightforward drinking hole, an image Wright and his team were determined to lose upon securing the venue.

“The idea really was to make what was already an amazing space into a venue that caters to rock n’ roll youth. I feel that Camden is lacking a space like this.

“When I started one of my first goals was to transform the appearance of the venue, to try and immediately drag ourselves away from the Wetherspoon’s image, because that was the image we had, with all the preconceptions that came with it.”

It cannot be denied that they have achieved their goal. Anyone poring over the celebrity pages in July would have seen pictures of Amy Winehouse jumping on the decks at The Monarch for an impromptu DJ set (apparently this is her new ‘low-key’ boozer of choice after The Hawley went up in flames), while with collaborations with James Lavelle from UNKLE, resident DJs in the shape of Marky J-Killer and MizBehave and recent shows from some of the city’s most trend-setting talents, such as ddd, The Monarch is unique in its programming. There’s even a metal night every Monday.

All the more impressive when you consider the speed of the turnaround from faceless pub to charismatic live venue. And there’s more to it than just music.

“We see ourselves as one of the only real boutique venues in Camden,” says Wright. “We don’t do ‘gigs’, we do ‘events’. Everything we’ve built is aimed at being a spectacle.”

Page 26: Tom Wright – CV - 2016

Therefore, one can walk into The Monarch of an evening and potentially find burlesque, cabaret, a circus, a casino, theatre and even a church. There’s also podcasts from the guys at Rock Feedback. Of course, The Monarch was a key venue in this year’s Camden Crawl, yet they are not, Wright says, a ‘sceney’ venue.

“We’re not out to dictate what people listen to. I think that’s something the East End does a lot, you know, people with asymmetrical haircuts and one jean leg rolled up for no apparent reason. We just listen to what people want and give it to them.”

And, given these shaky economic times we are apparently in the midst of, is starting a new venue from scratch a scary proposition?

“I think that in a time of recession,” says Wright, “the one people that people read is to have somebody put a smile on their face, and we have the clout to pull in some really cool people and acts just through making friends.”
