Morethanever,inaworldinwhichsomanyuntruthsandconflictingmessagesaresentdailytoouryoungpeople,parentsneedassistanceandsupportinhelpingtheirchildrentoknow,toloveandtoserveJesus.ThatisthereasonourCatholicSchoolsexist.Theyprovidetheopportunityeachandeverydayforstudentstopray,tomeditateuponSacredScripture,tostudytheCatholicfaithandtocelebratetheSacraments.Tremendousgratitudeisexpressedtoyou,dearparents,forthesacrificesyoumaketoprovideyourstudentswiththisexperience.IassureyouofmyongoingsupportoftheCatholicSchoolsinourDiocese,ofwhichIamsoveryproud.(Withgreatjoy,thisalsoincludesournewestschoolinGreenville,PopeJohnPaulIICatholicHighSchool.)DeepthanksisalsoexpressedtoourpastorsandCatholiceducatorsfortheircommitmenttomakeourschoolsstronginCatholicidentityandvibrantinfaith,aswellasknownfortheircommitmenttoexcellenceineducation. AnothergreatsourceofprideinourDioceseistheparishfaithformationprogramsthatalsoprovidetremendousassistancetoourparentsinhelpingtheirchildrengrowintheirCatholicfaith.Theseprogramscanonlyexistwiththesupportofourpastorsandthemanylaydirectors,leaders,catechistsandvolunteerswhogenerouslyoffertheirdedicatedservice.Ijoinourparentsinexpressingprofoundthankstoallofyou. Ialsorecognizeourparentswhohomeschooltheirchildren.Youreflectgreatcommitmenttoyourvocationasthefirstteachersofyourchildren.KnowthattheDiocesewillcontinuetoseeknewandcreativewaystopartnerwithyou. WhatmustalwaysbeattheheartofourCatholicSchoolsandfaithformationprograms?First,wemustteachourchildrenhowtopraysothattheymaygrowintheirintimaterelationshipwiththeLord.Thisrelationshipmustbefosteredandnurturedasweleadthemtoa
deeperloveandreverenceforJesusinthepreciousgiftoftheHolyEucharist.WemustgivethemalovefortheWordofGodandencouragethemtoallowtheWordtoguideandenlightentheminalltheirdecisions.Wemustgivethem“substance”—trueknowledgeofourCatholicfaithandtheteachingsoftheChurchsotheycanclearlyarticulateandsharethemwithothers.Finally,wemustprovidethemwithopportunitiestolivetheirfaithandshowtheirloveforJesusinactsofserviceand,especially,inoutreachtothoseinourmidstwhoaremostinneed.Thisservice,ofcourse,isrootedintheconvictionsthatalllifeissacred,thatthedignityofeachandeverypersonmustberespectedandthatwemuststrivedailytoliveasbrothersandsistersinChrist,asmembersofGod’sholyfamily. Inlightoftheessentialneedtoprovideourstudentswith“substance”astheystrivetolearntheirfaith,IamveryproudtostatethattheReligionCurriculumandGuidelinesforourCatholicSchoolsandparishfaithformationprogramshaverecentlybeenreviewed,revisedandstrengthened.Theseinitiativesreflecthardworkfromoutstanding,dedicatedcommitteemembers,towhomIammostgrateful.TheirexpertiseandwisdomhelpedtoproduceasoundcurriculumanddetailedguidelineswhichwillbeinvaluableresourcestoparentsandCatholiceducators.TheCurriculumandGuidelinescanbefoundontheDiocesanwebsiteatthelinkforeitherCatholicFormationandEvangelizationorCatholicSchools. Weallloveourchildren.Weseektoprovidethemwithalltheyneedtogrowateverylevelofformation.Yet,thereisnogreatergiftwecangivethemthantohelpthemtoknowJesus“betterandbetter”forHeistheWay,theTruthandtheLife!Asanewacademicyearbegins,mayallofus,especiallyyou,dearparents,berenewedinthatcommitment.KnowthatweasaDioceseareheretoassistyouineverywaypossible!
Helping Our Children to “Know Jesus Better and Better”
thisfirstWorldYouthDayasthenewHolyFather,PopeBenedictXVIremindedyoungpeopleandallofusthatourhighestprioritymustbethatof“gettingtoknowJesusbetterandbetter.”Asanewacademicyearbeginsforsomanyofouryoungpeople,wepraytheywillexperienceabundant
blessingsastheypursuetheirstudiesandavailthemselvesofthecountlessexperiencesthatwillbeofferedtothem.Atthesametime,weareremindedthatourhighestpriorityishelpingourstudentsintheirquestfortheTruth,whoisJesusChrist,sotheywill“gettoknowHimbetterandbetter.”Thisresponsibility,ofcourse,beginswithyou,dearparents.Youarethefirstteachersofyourchildreninthewaysoffaith.Thankyouforyourfaithfulnesstothisbeautifulvocation.

New Religion Curriculum Approved by Bishop
nJuly15,theMostReverendMichaelF.BurbidgeapprovedanewK-8Religion
CurriculumforCatholicschoolsandparishfaithformationprogramsintheDioceseofRaleigh.TheCurriculumreplacestheGuidelinesforCatechesis,publishedinJune1999,andisaresponsetotheDiocesanPastoralPlan,whichcallsforarenewedfocusonFormationandSacramentalPractice.TheCurriculumwillbeimplementedforthe2010-2011schoolyear.
TheCurriculumwasdevelopedbyacorecommitteeandreviewedbythirty-onepeopleincludingpriests,deacons,deanerycoordinators,principals,religioncoordinators,teachersandcatechistsfromacrosstheDiocese. Inpromulgatingtherevisedcurriculum,BishopBurbidgestated,“Iammostgratefultoallthosewhoofferedtheirexpertiseandtalentinproducingthissubstantialdocument.IamconfidentitwillbeavaluableandrichresourceforourparentsandthosewhoassistthemintheformationoftheirchildreninthewayoftheFaith.” Mrs.RosalieInnacelli,Assistant

Update on Cathedral Campus Feasibility Study
TheDioceseofRaleighhasreceivedafavorablereportonaFeasibilityStudycommissionedbytheMostReverendMichaelF.BurbidgeinJanuarytodeterminesupportforconstructionofaCathedralCampusthatwouldincludeanewDiocesanCathedral,GatheringHall,CatholicCenterOfficeBuilding,aswellasfinancialsupportforparishes. Thestudy,conductedbyGraham-PeltonConsulting,includedapproximately200personalinterviewsandanoutstandingreturnofmorethan800responsestoasurveymailedtoapproximately2500randomlyselecteddonorstopastDiocesaninitiativesthroughoutthe54-countyDiocese.Whilesomewhowereinterviewedandcompletedthesurveyacknowledgedthattheproposedprojectwouldrequireconsiderableworkandchallenges,theresultsofthestudyindicatesahighlevelofsupportfortheCathedralCampusfromclergy,religiousandlaity. AfterreviewingresultsoftheFeasibilityStudy,theCouncilofPriestsandtheDiocesanFinanceCouncil,inseparatevotes,recommendedtoBishopBurbidgethattheDioceseshouldproceedwiththenextphaseofthepotentialcapitalcampaignproject.Thatwillincludeformingvariousadvisorycommitteestodealwiththemanyaspectsoftheprojectandtodevelopproposedpoliciesandprocedures.BishopBurbidgeacceptedtherecommendationsofbothDiocesancouncils.TheDioceseisnowintheprocessofimplementingthisnextphase. UpdatesonthestatusoftheproposedCathedralCampuswillbeissuedatregularintervals.

OnAugust21,BishopMichaelF.BurbidgeannouncedtheappointmentofMrs.JacquelineBonkasDirectorofthenewlycreatedPro-LifeOfficeoftheDioceseofRaleigh.Mrs.Bonkischargedwithdeveloping,designingandfacilitatingtheimplementationofpastoralpro-lifeactivi-ties,aswellastheeducationandinvitationofthefaithfultoparticipateinprotectingthesanctityofallhumanlife. Mrs.BonkisanAdministratoratWakeTechnicalCom-munityCollege.For15yearsshehasalsobeenDiocesanDirectorofProjectRachel,ahealingministryformenandwomenwhohavechosenabortionsinthepast.ShesaidthePro-LifeOfficewillbeinvolvedwiththeentirespectrumofpro-lifeadvocacy,includingabortion,embryonicstemcellresearch,euthanasiaandthedeathpenalty.“Amongotheractivities,”shesaid,“we’llbeprovidingdirectiontoparishpro-lifecoordinators,coordinatingDiocesanpro-lifeeventsandworkingwiththeDiocesanCommunicationsOfficetodeveloppro-lifecommunications.

The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, willdelivertheKeynoteaddressinEnglish.BornDecember7,1947,inChicago,ArchbishopWiltonD.GregoryattendedSt.CarthageGrammarSchool,whereheconvertedtoCatholicism.HeattendedQuigleyPreparatorySeminarySouth,NilesCollege(nowSt.Joseph’sCollegeSeminary)ofLoyolaUniversityandSt.MaryoftheLakeSeminary. HewasordainedapriestfortheArchdioceseofChicagoonMay9,1973.ThreeyearsafterhisordinationhebegangraduatestudiesatthePontificalLiturgicalInstitute(Sant’Anselmo)inRome.Thereheearnedhisdoctorateinsacredliturgyin1980.
AfterhavingservedasanassociatepastorofOurLadyofPerpetualHelpParishinGlenview,Ill.,asamemberofthefacultyofSt.MaryoftheLakeSeminaryinMundeleinandasamasterofceremoniestoCardinalsJohnCodyandJosephBernardin,hewasordainedanauxiliaryBishopofChicagoonDec.13,1983.OnFeb.10,1994,hewasinstalledastheseventhBishopoftheDioceseofBelleville,Ill.,whereheservedforthenextelevenyears. OnDec.9,2004,PopeJohnPaulIIappointedBishopGregoryasthesixthArchbishopoftheArchdioceseofAtlanta.HewasinstalledonJan.17,2005.ArchbishopGregoryhasalsocontributedaleadingroleintheU.S.church.InNov.2001,hewaselectedPresidentoftheU.S.ConferenceofCatholicBishopsfollowingthreeyearsasVicePresidentunderBishopJosephFiorenzaoftheDioceseofGalveston-Houston.Duringhistenureinoffice,thecrisisofsexabusebyCatholicclergyescalated,andunderhisleadership,theBishopsimplementedthe“CharterfortheProtectionofChildrenandYoungPeople.” HeservedontheNCCBExecutiveandAdministrativeCommittees,theAdministrativeBoard,theCommitteeonDoctrineandtheU.S.CatholicConferenceCommitteeonInternationalPolicy.HepreviouslyservedasthechairmanoftheBishops’CommitteesonPersonnelandtheThirdMillennium/JubileeYear2000from1998-2001,andLiturgyfrom1991-93. ArchbishopGregoryhaswrittenextensivelyonchurchissues,includingpastoralstatementsonthedeathpenaltyandeuthanasia/physician-assistedsuicide,andhaspublishednumerousarticlesonthesubjectofliturgy,particularlyintheAfrican-Americancommunity.
Sister Doris Turek, S.S.N.D.,willdelivertheKeynoteaddressinSpanish.SisterjoinedthestaffoftheSecretariatfortheLiturgyoftheUnitedStatesConferenceofCatholicBishopsin2002.SheassumedthenewpositionofSpecialistinMulti-culturalLiturgicalIssues,inadditiontohergeneralresponsibilitiesintheSecretariatinassistingBishopsandtheirDiocesanofficesanddevelopmentofdocumentationfortheBCLanditsSubcommitteesandTaskGroups. hasworkedasacraneoperator.Hishobbiesincludehiking,camping,fishing,andwoodworking.RichardhadvisitedMepkinAbbeymanytimessince1997. Richardwillbecalleda“monasticguest”for1-3months,thenreceiveabluesmock.Later,ifallgoeswell,hewillenterhispostulancyandthennovitiate.

OnJune11,PopeBenedictXVIofferedtheclosingMassoftheYearforPriests,ayearhehaddesignatedtoencouragepriestsin“strivingforspiritualperfection,onwhich,aboveall,theeffectivenessoftheirministrydepends.” PresentattheMass,alongwithsome17,000priestsfromaroundtheworld,wastheMannfamilyfromtheDioceseofRaleigh.TimMann,whoservesaschairmanoftheDiocesanFinanceCouncil,wasonaEuropeanvacationwithhiswifeKerryandtheirthreechildren.Hesaiditwas“purecoincidence”thattheiritineraryfoundtheminRomeonthedayoftheceremony. “Therewerearound35,000peoplegatheredinSt.Peteer’sSquare,”TimMannrecalled.“Peoplearrivedhoursaheadoftimeandstoodin95-degreeheatwaitingforthe10a.m.Mass.”TheHolyFathergreetedeachcountryrepresented,andthepeoplefromthosecountrieswouldraisetheirflags.TimfoundthesenseofCatholicunity“verymoving.”HewasalsoimpressedthatPopeBenedictspokedirectlyinhishomilyabouttheissueofsexualabusebypriests.Thehomilywasreceivedwithcheers. traveledwiththreeseminar-ianstoHonduras.Thegroupspent14daysthere,visit-ingthepeople,parishesandclergyandReligious,inordertoexposetheseminarianstoamissionaryexperienceinaHispanicculture.“There’smoretoHispanicministrythanspeakingthelanguage,”Fr.Nedsaid.“It’simportanttounderstandthecultureHispanicscomefrom,andthewaytheyexperienceChurch.”
Oneoftheseminariansonthetrip,IanVanHeusen,sharedthefollowingreflectiononhisexperience: “‘Howbeautiful!’thewomanrepeatedinSpanishasFatherShlesingersaidtheRiteoftheAnointingoftheSick.Thefloorofherhousewasdirt,andherhouseconsistedofoneroomthatwassharedbyseveralgenerationsofthefamily.Nextdoor,herdaughterpreparedfoodforthedayoverawoodstove.Amongstthedirtandplantlifeofherfrontyard,childrenandlivestockmingled,theformergraz-ingamongstthechildren’sgames.ThefaithandthesimplejoyofthiswomanwhoseemeddelightedatthepresenceofthepriestinhermidstwasapowerfulreminderofwhyIaminseminary. “ThepriestistheonlyonewhocanbringJesustothepeoplethroughthesacraments.Sure,wecancomfortourneighborswithkindwords,wecanshareourdailybread,butitisonlythepriestwhobringsthehealingpowerofthesacraments.Thiswasthemainthing
IwitnessedinHonduras.Timeandtimeagain,IwasovercomebythewayFatherShlesinger’spresenceasapriestbroughthopetoeachplacewevisited.Itwasnotabouthispersonalityorhistalents,merelythefactofwhathewas. “SeveraltimeswhilewewereinHonduras,wevisitedtheMissionariesofCharity–MotherTeresa’sSisters–andoneofthemexpressedthishopeelo-quently:‘ThankyouforbringingJesus.’ThesehumbleSisters,whoselivesarefocusedonthesacraments,bringhopetohundredsofthepoorwhoareonthemarginsofsociety.Buttheyalsoneededtobefed,andthatiswhatapriestcandothroughthesacraments. “WealsospentmuchtimewiththeFranciscanFriarsoftheRenewal,withwhomweprayeddailyandtookourmeals.Theirjoyandfraternity,centeredonworkingwiththepoor,wasrefreshingforus,especiallyafterourvisitstopar-ishesandourmissiontriptothemoun-tains.WealsoworkedwiththeMissionar-iesofChrist,awonderfullayorganizationdedicatedtoevangelizingtheHonduranpeople. “Itwaswiththemthatwespentthemostmemorablepartofthetrip,ourfivedaysinthemountains.Ineachtownwevisited,thepeopleflockedtothechurch,
fortheyareaccustomedtoreceivingthesacramentsonlyonceamonth.ThejoywithwhichtheylinedupforconfessionandparticipatedintheMasswastrulymoving.FatherNedwouldspendhoursateachparishhearingconfessionsandanointingthesick,whiletheMissionar-iesofChrist,withRamonGarcia,DonMaloneyandmewoulddocatechesis.TowitnessthefaithofthesepeoplewhostrugglesomuchreallychallengedmetofallinlovewiththeLordalloveragain. “Oneexperienceinthemountainswasespeciallymovingforme.Wevisitedasmall,tworoomhousesimilartotheonementionedearlier.Anolderwoman(shewasatleastinhereight-ies)seemedtobebusycleaningandpreparingthefoodfortheday.Weweresurprisedthatthelocaldel-egatethoughtFathershouldvisitthiswoman,becauseshedidn’tseemsickatall.Asweentered,shebeamedwithjoyatseeingFather,andgraciouslyusheredustotheonlychairsthatwereintheroom.Asweentered,FatheraskedherinSpanish,‘Whatpartofyourbodyishurting?’Withabigsmileandalittlechuckle,shereplied,‘Everything.’ “InhereyesandsmileIsawthejoythatcomesnotfromworldlythings,butfromembracingtheCross.”

Mrs.TeresaAldahondo,ConsultanttotheDiocesanOfficeofHispanicMinistry,hasretiredafter19yearsofservicetotheDiocese.ThoseyearshaveseentremendousgrowthinfaithministrytoHispanicCatholicsand,Teresasays,inherownlearningabouthowtoaccomplishthatministry.“WhenIfirstcametotheCatholicCenter,”shesays,“IhaddonefieldworkwithHispanicsthroughmyparish,andI’dhelpedthenunsatmykids’school,butIhadnotrainingintryingtodevelopHispanicministryataDiocesanlevel.”AtthattimeTeresa,whowasborninPuertoRicoandraisedinNewYork,wasoneofthefewSpanishspeakersintheDiocesanoffices. Shewaschargedwith“outreach.”Learninghowtodothatinvolvedalotof“OJT,”on-the-jobtraining,shesayswithasmile.Initiallythebiggestchallengewasdevelopingleadersattheparishlevel,anareawhereTeresabelievestherehasbeenalotofprogress.“Findingleadersisstillachallenge,”shesays,“butIthinkit’simproved.Wehavemoreparishesonboardandwehavepaidparishcoordinatorswhomeetregularlyforplanningandfortheirownfaithformation.Weteachthemtoteachothers.”

Bishop Burbidge Dedicates Expansion of St. Brendan Church in Shallotte
OnSunday,July25th,theMostReverendMichaelF.BurbidgededicatedthenewlyexpandedSt.BrendantheNavigatorChurchinShallotte,NC.Thechurchnowseats1200worshippers,replacingtheformerspacewhichaccommodated500,andmakingSt.BrendanoneofthelargestchurchesintheDiocese. Evenwith1200seats,200foldingchairswereaddedtoaccommodatethelargecrowdfortheDedicationMass.Inhisopeningremarks,BishopBurbidgesaid,“WecommendyouforbuildingsuchabeautifulhouseofGod.Itisareflectionofwhatyoubelieve.”Headded,“NothingismoreimportantthangatheringtogetherasGod’sholypeopletoofferpraiseandworshipandgloryandhonortotheLordourGod,knowingthatonlyinHimthroughHimandwithHimcanweaccomplishmarvelousdeeds.” BeforeMassbegan,thebuilderpassedthekeystothechurchtotheBishop.TheBishopthenblessedthewallsofthechurchwithholywater. TomO’BrienlivesjusttwoblocksfromSacredHeartindowntownRaleighandenjoystheintimacyofthesmall-estCatholicCathedralinthecontinentalUnitedStates. ThecoachgrewupinCincinnatiinadevoutCatholicfamily.BothofhisparentsattendeddailyMass,asdidO’Brien,aCatholicschoolstudentfor12years.HefondlyrecallsthatonlongcartripshisfamilywouldsaytheRosarytogethertopassthetime,andtherewasrarelyaSundaynightwhentherewasn’tapriestasaguestatthedinnertable. Becauseofhisloveoffoot-ball,O’BriensaidhewantedtoattendPurcellHighSchool.RunbyMarianistpriests,PurcellwaswherelocallegendRogerStaubachplayedinthelate1950sbeforegoingontowintheHeismanTrophyattheNavalAcademyandtoquar-terbacktheDallasCowboys.ButhisfatherinsistedthatheattendSt.XavierHigh,whichisrunbyJesuits,andtodayO’Brienisgladhedid. “Therewasneveranyques-tionthatweweregoingtotheJesuits,”hesaid.“Itwasforthebest.Fatherknowsbest.Inthosedaysyouobeyedand
believedinyourfather.” Later,ascoachofBostonCollegefortenyearsbeforecomingtoN.C.Statebeforethe2007season,O’Briensaidhisfaithwasenrichedbythespiritthatpermeatesthecam-pusofoneofthenation’stopCatholicuniversities. InalettertoBishopMichaelF.Burbidge,MostReverendJoseH.Gomez,CoadjutorArchbishopofLosAngelesandChairmanoftheUSCCBSubcommitteeontheChurchinLatinAmerica,andMostReverendTimothyDolan,ArchbishopofNewYorkandChairmanofCatholicReliefServices(CRS)BoardofDirectors,expressedtheirheartfeltappreciationtoBishopBurbidgeandthefaithfulof

Thesearetimelessquestionsand,takentogether,constitutewhatisoftencalledthetheodicyquestion,thequestionofGodandhumansuffering.
Everysooftenthisquestionhitsuswithaparticularpoi-gnancy,asitdidlastJanuarywiththeearthquakeinHaiti.Somewherebetweenaquarterofamillionandhalfamillionpeoplearedead,thousandsareinjured,hundredsofthousandsarehomeless,thousandsmorenowfacethepossibilityofdiseasefromlackofproperwater,food,housing,andhygiene,itscapitalcityhasbeenalmostcompletelydestroyed,andvirtuallyeveryoneinthecountryhaslostlovedones.Andallofthishappenedtooneofthepoorestnationsintheworld–andtoapeoplewhohaveadeepfaithinGod.
WhereisGodinallthis?Howdoesonefindafaithperspectivewithinwhichtounderstandthis?Noteasily.
Whenwesearchscriptureforanswers,wefindthatneithertheJewishscripturesnorJesustrytotacklethequestionphilosophically,namely,inthetypeofwaythatChristianandJewishapologeticwritershavetriedtoanswerit.ScriptureandJesus,instead,dotwothings:First,theyplacesufferingandtragedyintoalargerperspectivewithinwhichGodisunder-stoodmoreasredeemingsufferingratherthanasrescuingusfromit.Second,theyassureusthatGodiswithus,afellow-sufferer,inanytragedy.
Forexample,anyonewhofollowsthedailyreadingsforthechurch’sliturgy,cannotnothavenoticed,thatontheverydayaftertheearthquake,therewasahauntingparallelbetweenwhathappenedinHaitiandwhatwasdescribedinthatday’sEpistletakenfromtheBookofSamuel.HereisanexcerptfromtheEpistlefortheliturgythedayaftertheearthquake:
SothepeoplewenttoShiloh,andbroughtwiththemthearcofthecovenantoftheLordofhosts,whoisenthronedonthecherubim.ThetwosonsofEli,HophniandPhinehas,weretherewiththeArkoftheCovenant.WhenthearkofthecovenantoftheLordwasbroughtintothecamp,allIsraelgaveamightyshout,sothatthewholeearthresounded....[Andwiththatfaithandconfidence,Israelmarchedintobattle,but]...Israelwasdefeated,andeveryonefled,eachto
hisownhouse.Therewasagreatslaughterandthirtythousandofherfoot-soldiersfell.Thearcofthecovenantwascaptured;andthetwosonsofElidied.
Onedoesn’thavetostraintheimaginationtowriteahauntingparallel:
SothepeopleHaitipracticedtheirChristianfaithwithpietyandconfidence.Theywenttotheirchurches,receivedtheEucharist,andlitvigilcandlestotheirGod.AndtheytrustedthattheirGodwouldprotectthem.Buttherecameagreatearthquake.Hundredsofthousandsofitspeopledied,itsgreatbuildingswereallleveled,allitschurchesweredestroyed,itsbelovedcathedralfelltotheground,andthe
Archbishopwaskilled.SowherewasGodinallofthis?TheBookofSamueldoesn’ttrytowritean
apologeticstoexplainwhathappenedthatdaywhenapeoplewhohadjustcelebrateditsfaithandconfidenceinGodwereutterlycrushedinbattle.Itdoesn’ttrytoexplainwhereGodwaswhenthishappened.Itsimplycontinuestotellitsstoryand,eventually,weseehowGodredeemsatragedyfromwhichhedidn’trescueitsvictims.ItalsomakesclearthatGodwaswiththepeopleofIsrael,evenastheywerebeingrouted.
Jesusgivesusessentiallythesameperspec-tive:Whenhisfriend,Lazarus,laydying,hedidn’trushtohissidetorescuehim.HewaiteduntilLazaruswasdeadandonlythenwenttohishome.HewasmettherebythesistersofLazarus,MarthaandMary,whoeachaskedhim
thepainfulquestion:Wherewereyouwhenourbrotherwasdying?Whydidn’tyoucomeandcurehim?
Jesus,forhispart,doesn’tmeettheirquestionhead-on.In-steadhesimplyasks:“Wherehaveyouputhim?”Theyanswer:“Come,we’llshowyou!”TheytakehimtothegraveandwhenJesusseesthetombanddrinksintheirgrief,hesitsdownandbeginstocry.Heentersandsharestheirgrief.Onlyafterwardsdoesheraiseupthebodyofhisdeadfriend.
WherewasGodwhentheearthquakehitHaiti?Hewasweepingwithitspeople,grievingoutsideitsmass
graves,sittinginsadnessbesideitscollapsedbuildings.Hewasthere,thoughheprovidednoHollywoodorSuperman-typeres-cue.Moreoverwecanbesurehewillredeemwhatwaslost.InGod’stime,eventually,notasinglelifeorsingledreamthatdiedinHaitiwillremainunredeemed.Intheend,allwillbewellandallwillbewellandeverymannerofbeingwillbewell.

St. Ann Church in Clayton Celebrates 75th Anniversary
OnSaturday,July24th,St.AnnCatholicChurchinClaytoncelebratedits75thanniversarywithaMassofThanksgivingofferedbytheMostReverendMichaelF.Burbidge,BishopofRaleigh.ConcelebratingtheMasswereseveralofthepriestswhohavepastoredSt.Ann:Msgr.MichaelG.Clay,thecurrentPastor,aswellasformerpastorsFr.RobertF.Shea,Fr.PaulW.Brant,S.J.,Fr.ScottE.Mc-Cue,andMsgr.FrancisR.Moeslein.AlsoconcelebratingwasFr.JamesF.Garneau,DeanoftheNewtonGroveDeanery. TheparishofSt.AnnfirsttookrootinSmithfield,whereafewstaunch
Catholicfamiliesworshippedasearlyas1854,whentheHenryB.WatsonfamilyhostedMassintheirfarmhouse. Diocese Honors Dr. Lori Schweickert for Missionary Leadership
TheDioceseofRaleighhasawardedDr.LoriSchweik-ert,MD,anappreciationawardfor10yearsofdedicatedserviceastheDiocesanyoungadultmissionteamcoordi-nator. Ascoordinator,Dr.Schweikertfacilitatedtheoverallplanningandimplementationoftheweek-longmissiontripstocountriessuchasJamaica,theDominicanRepublicandHonduras.Sheestablishedprojectsthatfocusedonmedi-cine,education,andconstructionandcollaboratedwiththesitehost,thespiritualdirectorandtheOfficeofEvange-lizationandCatechesis.Dr.SchweikertalsotookpartinmedicalmissionstoThailandfollowingthe2004tsunamiandtoHaitifollowingthe2010earthquake. Fr.Mearespraiseshisdedicatedandgenerousparishioners.TheirmanyoutreachministriesincludeanactiveKnightsofColumbusandvariousministriestofosterspiritual-ity,justiceandfaith.Onegroup,DrumCircle,bringschildreninthecommunitytogetheronceamonthattheChurchforfunandfaithformation.FatherMearesremarksonthelovethevolunteersshowthechildreneachmonth. OurLadyofPerpetualHelpSchoolwasopenedin1939with35childrenundertheguidanceofSisters,ServantsoftheImmacu-lateHeartofMaryfromScranton,Pa.TheSistersservedthereforthenext59years.Theschoolishighlyregardedinthecommunityandcontinuestogrow.Itproudlygraduateditsfirst8thgradeclassthisyear.“Ithasbeenbeautifultowatchfamilieswhoaren’tCatholic,buthaveattendedtheschoolandbeenexposedtothefaith,feelcom-pelledtofullyentertheChurch,”saidFatherMeares.“IwastalkingtoaclassroomofchildrenaboutourfaithandayoungAfricanAmericangirlaskedme,“WhatdoessomeonehavetodotojointheChurch?”Igaveheragenericanswerandthenlaterthatnight,throughGod’sgrace,IrealizedmaybeshereallywantedtojointheChurch.OnthefollowingPentecost,wewelcomedherintothefaith.” ThroughOurLadyofPerpetualHelpSchoolandbothparishes,theCatholicChurchinRockyMountcontinuestosay,“Youcancometome.”

IntheafternoonstheteensfacilitatedactivitiessuchasafieldtriptoMarblesMuseum,waterdaywithballoonsandsprinklersandfacepaint-ing.ThestudentsspenttheeveningswithresidentsofRaleighRescueMission,hostinggamenightandorganizingactivitiesforthechildren. “Thepeoplewemet,servedandlovedhaveenrichedourlives,”saidMrs.Higgins.“Wereceivedmuchmorethanwegave.”

Insteadofsleepinginandspendinglazydaysatthepool,seventeenteenagersspentaweekoftheirsum-mervacationwashingfeetandgivingawaynewpairsofsocksandshoesatMooreSquareParkinRaleigh. Forthesecondyearinarow,StLuketheEvangelistCatholicChurchhighschoolyouthministrysetouton“MissionPossible,”aweek-longservicetripindowntownRaleigh.“Wewantedthekidstomeetthehomelessandrealizethattheycomefromallwalksoflife,”saidBetsyHiggins,anorganizerofMis-sionPossible.“Manyofthehomelesshavehaddifficultsituationswhichleavethemunabletoworkandprovideforthemselves.” Over300pairsofshoesweredistributedthroughouttheweek.“Webecameknownas‘TheFootWash-

OnAugust18,thefaculty,staffandupperclassmenofCardinalGibbonsHighSchoolinRaleighwelcomedtheClassof2014.FreshmanweredroppedoffincarpoolsthenescortedbyupperclassmentothetheatreforMass.Wavinggoodbyefromtheircars,parentswereofferedconsolationmuffinsbytheDirectorofAdmissions,Ms.
MarianneMcCarty.“ThethingIrememberthemost,”saidKatePiccola,Senior,“wasthatIwasthegirlwhohadtobedraggedoutofmymom’scar.Icamethismorningtohelpfreshmanwhowerefeelingnervouslikeme.” “Theupperclassmentakeownershipandplanthisdayforthefreshman,”saidMr.MichaelRogosich,AssistantPrincipalofStudentActivities.“Ihadkidsemailingmeallsummeraboutit;theygetreallyexcitedaboutWelcomeDay.”Over400upperclassmanvolunteeredtohelpwiththeday.
