Some £5,000 towards the camera, for which match funding would be sought, was allocated by the January council as part of its £103,020 spending plans for the next financial year. The idea was that the camera would work with one already existing at Rodborough to record and control traffic speeds across the commons, with the aim of reducing the number of collisions between cows and cars. The council also allocated £24,000 for a second year towards “community opportunities” - the Traffic Regulation Orders for central Minchinhampton - which are under consideration by its Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee. As many will already know, a public consultation is currently underway after that new committee was tasked by the council with looking into the possibility of limited vehicle waiting in the daytime in Market Square, High Street and the lower parts of both Tetbury Street and West End. Retailers, residents and visitors have been invited to take part in the consultation. Their comments will be considered at the next Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee meeting on March 4 th . New allotments’ regulations were supported too by the coun- cil, which further agreed to fund the cost of numbering the plots. The Council also commended resident Siân Wyn-Jones for her hard work on the new rules. Potential changes to the parish boundary at Houndscroft and Brimscombe were discussed and will be further debated when a formal consultation is begun by Stroud District Council. Talks involving the National Trust, the commons’ graziers and Gifford’s Circus are understood to have agreed that the circus will go ahead in Minchinhampton in 2019 but with various provisos. This is in order to limit damage to the Great Park where the circus will be held. *********************** The council is concerned about the loss of natural stone tiles from the roof of Park Farm Court (commonly known as the Piggeries). SDC, who own the buildings, decided to reroof the complex but without appreciating the historic and aesthetic value of the traditional roof in the conservation area. The Parish Council is investigating the matter. Interestingly, these buildings are not ‘listed’. COUNCILLOR ROY NICHOLAS Tributes have flooded in following the death of Roy Nicholas who was a member of his local Minchinhampton Parish council in Stroud for an outstanding half a century. Cllr Nicholas, 82, had served on the council for a continuous 50 years and had been looking forward to a celebration of the milestone achievement before his recent illness overtook events. “You have to recognise that he was absolutely dedicated to public service and his contribution to the community cannot be dismissed. It is unlikely to be repeated in a hurry,” said Cllr Nick Hurst, the current chairman of Minchinhampton PC. Cllr Nicholas, who also served on both the Stroud District and Gloucestershire County councils and on countless charities, was himself chairman at Minchinhampton for 18 consecutive years after originally joining it in the late 1960s. He was currently its vice-chairman, and chairman of its Finance Com- mittee. A resident of Minchinhampton, Cllr Nicholas died at Gloucester- shire Royal Hospital on 1 st January and is survived by his son and daughter. After his death, flags were flown at half-mast at Ebley Mill, the headquarters of Stroud District Council where Cllr Nicholas was chair from 1983 to 1987. “Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time,” an SDC spokesman said.
