TWO STARS AND A QUEST - WHEN SANTA GOT LOST IN SPACEWed 25 & Thu 26 Jan, 7.30pm / £8/£5

Stirling stage company Theatre Broad are back with an exciting sequel to their award-winning production of Star Quest, which played at the Tolbooth in 2007.

Join United Star Ship Stirlingprise in the year 2356 as they make their way home for Christmas. The crew are busy rehearsing a Panto “When Santa Got Lost In Space” which they will perform when they reach earth on Christmas Eve. But will they ever get home? As the Stirlingprise hurtles towards earth, we hear those fearful and fateful words: “Captain, we have a problem!”

The crew call upon old friends to help them in their plight as an alien force, determined to destroy Earth and everyone on it, tightens its grip on our intrepid explorers.

This play within a play is a true festive feast; with the best of traditional Panto, characters from your favourite sci-fi stories, and exciting filmed sequences.

The production, in association with Forth Valley College, is part of the ‘Community Roots’ programme, which puts professional actors on stage with people of all ages with learning disabilities.

BABELFISHFri 27 Jan, 8pm£10

Described as “half poetry, half rap”, Jock Urquhart’s resonant lyrics are layered over Adam Sutherland’s fiddle, John Somerville’s accordion, Jo Bingham's flute, Andy Thorburn’s keys and Iain Copeland’s drums. Tinges of jazz, rock, reggae and blues ensure the band transcend familiar folk parameters to achieve a truly distinctive and highly entertaining sound.

This night of rousing music and spoken word will include original material from Babelfish in addition to old Burns favourites.

“I couldn’t believe all this glorious

music was coming from just five

guys" fRoots

Enjoy an alternative Burns night with Babelfish as they perform the legendary bard’s works in a unique and contemporary way. Mixing the traditions of fiddles and flute with box, bass, keyboards and poetry, the band create an experience for the ears that you are unlikely to witness again.

Comprised of top Scottish musicians from groups such as the Peatbog Faeries, Treacherous Orchestra and Blazin’ Fiddles, Babelfish are a melting pot of musical influences born from an impromptu appearance at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival in 2005. Since then, the band has gone on to grace various festival stages, including several appearances at Rockness, and released debut album International Disgrace to critical acclaim.

ANDREW O'NEILL:ALTERNATIVEFri 3 Feb, 8pm / £8

GRAEME STEPHEN'SSUNRISESat 4 Feb, 8pm / £12/£10

Andrew O’Neill isn’t your run-of-the-mill stand-up comedian. He’s also a metal head, an amateur occultist, a musician, a heterosexual transvestite, and a vegan – so he’s got plenty to talk about!

O’Neill’s jokes are told with an infectious sense of silliness and demonstrate a highly inventive, hilariously twisted comic mind. It’s easy to see why he’s crossed easily into the realm of primetime comedy: he appeared on Steve Coogan’s hit TV show Saxondale and Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, and was the writer of several hit comedy sketches broadcast on national radio.

Guitarist and composer Graeme Stephen has written a powerful new score for F. W. Murnau’s Oscar-winning silent film ‘Sunrise’, which tells the story of a married man who falls for a slatternly woman from the city. Once under her spell, the woman attempts to persuade him to drown his wife.

An equally spellbinding live performance by Graeme’s Quintet will accompany this screening of Murnau’s masterpiece, responding to the full range of emotional moods and atmospheres featured in the film.

Experience the scintillating instrumental talents of Chris Stout (violin), Ben Davies (cello), Phil Bancroft (saxophone) and Chris Wallace (drums/percussion) as you enjoy what is widely considered to be the finest silent film ever made by a Hollywood studio.

THE ADVENTURES OF ANDY KERSHAWWed 29 Feb, 8pm£15

Andy Kershaw has no off switch. Already he’s lived ten lives to everyone else’s one. He was Billy Bragg’s driver and roadie one day and presenting Whistle Test and Live Aid the next. He is amongst the UK’s most decorated broadcasters and was a central figure in the popularisation of world music.

A born rebel and a maverick, he’s combined his passion for music with a lunatic curiosity and an instinct for frontline journalism, reporting for the BBC and the broadsheets from the world’s most extreme countries – Iraq, North Korea (he’s been four times), Haiti, Angola and Rwanda during the genocide.

Whether it applies to foreign adventures, romances, motorcycles, nervous breakdowns or relationships with a piece of music, Andy has always lived by his most reliable maxim: if you’re going to have one, have a big one.

Andy comes to the Tolbooth for an evening of conversation about his eventful life, accompanied by film excerpts from his adventures.

sold out scotland presents WOODENBOX WITH A FISTFUL OF FIVERS+ THE O'sThu 1 Mar, doors 7pmSTANDING ONLY

Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers are a folk-rock-soul sextet of pan-Scottish provenance. Singer and guitarist Ali Downer assumed the moniker 'Woodenbox' , in a nod to influences such as King Creosote and Bonnie Prince Billy and the addition of A Fistful of Fivers reflects a collective appreciation of Ennio Morricone's scores for the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone.

The band's debut album, released on Electric Honey (Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro) in April 2010 is entitled 'Home and the Wildhunt', a reference to the Celtic legend of 'The Wild Hunt'.

Praise and plays, including the accolade of BBC Radio 2 single of the week, make the forthcoming sophomore album, recorded in October 2011 with Paul Savage (Franz Ferdinand, The Phantom Band, Arab Strap) in the legendary Chem 19 studios, one of the most hotly-anticipated of 2012.

The band will play at the prestigious SXSW 2012 festival in Austin, Texas for the first time with more gigs to be announced in New York followed by a Texan tour with The O's who will be supporting Woodenbox in Stirling at the Tolbooth on 1st March 2012, a week before they all fly to the US!

Scottish alternative rock legends The Vaselines are famed for their connections with Nirvana, who covered three of their songs and openly supported them, with Kurt Cobain once describing Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee as his “most favorite songwriters in the whole world”.

The band formed in 1986 and split shortly after, but their return to the music scene in recent years has been welcomed with open arms.

They released second studio album Sex with an X in 2010, which was hailed as a “triumphant return” (BBC) and a “brilliant comeback” (The Guardian).

Joined by Belle and Sebastian members Stevie Jackson and Bobby Kildea, the band are back with a bang – but their live shows remain rare, so don’t miss this opportunity to see one of Scotland’s greatest rock bands at the Tolbooth.

The title of the commission comes from the name given to the original entrance to the Tolbooth, where money was given out to the people of Stirling, and for this performance the title also alludes to the musical opportunities open to the young people in the area. The evening will feature performances from each of the groups as well as performances by the tutors includingDavid Scott, Laura Macdonald and Lori Watson, and will end with a newly commissioned piece by recently crowned Composer of the Year, Aidan O'Rourke, bringing together some of each of the different groups into one large ensemble.

SPIERS & BODENSat 14 Apr, 8pm£12/£10

Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers and Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground.

Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which have taken them on to the main stages of major festivals.

Jon Boden (singer, fiddle, guitar, stomp-box), from Chicago, follows in the footsteps of many of the great folk-singers with his theatrical style. Birmingham-born John Spiers (melodeon, concertina) has carved his own space in the folk scene with his unique blending of traditional squeezebox styles and contemporary dance music.

Amongst the special guests are virtuoso American step-dancer, Nic Gareiss, and award-winning piper, Lorne MacDougall.

CRIMINAl Hanging Together 11 February – 14 AprilPreview 10 February, 7 – 9 pm.All welcome

CRIMINAL is presented by Hanging Together, a group of artists based in the Stirling area who have been creating installations and interventions, primarily in non-gallery spaces, throughout central Scotland since 1994.

CRIMINAL walks the line between the permissible and the unacceptable. Hanging Together navigate their way through challenging terrain for a new installation created exclusively for The Changing Room.

Nicola Carberry, Paul Eames, Carolyn Mason, Peter Russell, Val Shatwell and Karen Strang create works that question our sense of what may or may not be appropriate...Six different takes. Bordering on criminal.

The Changing Room at 15

Join us on the 10th February for the preview of our new exhibition CRIMINAL and to celebrate The Changing Room’s 15th Birthday!

Established in 1997 The Changing Room has not only brought emerging and established artistic talent of international standing to Stirling but has provided a crucial forum for vocational training and peer support for locally-based artists and young people to explore, develop and challenge their ideas and experience of art.

As a unique space for leading contemporary arts in Stirling, The Changing Room shows the best new work by local, national and international contemporary artists covering a diverse range of contemporary art practice.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the artists, volunteers and supporters of the gallery over the last 15 years.
