around Yoyogi Park. The bridge across the train tracks is full of teenagers dressed in extreme youth
fashions.
Also on display are junk vendors and rock bands - both occasionally dispersed by police crack-downs.

DAIKANYAMA T-SITe
Tokyo’s Klein Dytham Architecture won an award at the World
Architecture Festival for their work on Daikanyama T-Site.
The ‘T’ stands for rental chain Tsutaya, who helped fund the kind
of book emporium that most capital cities can only dream of.
It’s easy to lose hours thumbing through the selections here, which include a good range of English-lan-
guage titles. There are also music and DVD sections, as well as branches of Starbucks and Family Mart,
and you’ll find specialist camera, bicycle and pet shops elsewhere in the complex. The Anjin lounge
upstairs is hard to beat if you’re looking to enjoy some vintage periodicals and cocktails.

KOENJI / KICHIJOJIThe highlight of Kichij, which extends into Mitaka, is Inokashira Park, which has long walking paths
surrounding a lake. The park is filled with cherry and maple trees, making it an excellent choice for
both flower viewing in the spring, and witnessing autumn colors in autumn.
Kichij once enjoyed a reputation as an artists colony, and today it is filled with boutique stores as well
as the larger department stores. The area attracts all types, from upscale shoppers to hip-hop dancers
practicing in the train station and musicians playing live music in the park.

AKIHABARA
Akihabara - also known as Akihabara electric Town - is a district of Tokyo, Japan. It is located less
than five minutes by rail from Tokyo Station. Its name is frequently shortened to Akiba in Japan.
Akihabara is a major shopping area for electronic, computer, anime, games and all other things
‘otaku’, including new and used items. New items are mostly to be found on the main street, with
many kinds of used items found in the back streets of Soto Kanda 3-chme. Tools, electrical parts,
wires, tiny, tiny cameras and similar items are found in the cramped passageways of Soto Kanda
1-chōme (near the station). Foreign tourists tend to visit the big name shops like Laox or other special-
ity shops near the station, although there is more variety and lower prices at locales further away.
Akihabara has gained some notoriety for being home to one of the first stores devoted to personal
robots and robotics.
ART
2K540 AKI-OKA ArTISAN
5-9 Ueno, Taito, Tokyo Prefecture 110-0005, Japan
Okachi-machi, known for its wholesale stores selling jewelry and ornaments, is located between Ueno
and Akihabara. In December 2010, a new spot called “2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan” was born there which
gathers together the skills of traditional craftsmen. It is situated underneath the elevated railway tracks
as you walk towards Akihabara along the train tracks from JR Okachimachi Station. The theme of these
facilities is “making things,” and 2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan features a group of craftsmen who display their
advanced, high quality skills in galleries, studios, cafes, shops, and more. Visitors are able to shop, watch
and experience all many of craft-making, with regular workshops held to allow visitors to try their
hand at making things.
2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan’s mysterious name comes from railroad terminology expressing the distance
(called “kilotei”) from Tokyo Station. “Aki-Oka” refers to the location between Akihabara and Okachi-
machi.
